Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
It needs to be best which Trisquel is willing to also liberate LMDE, Kali, FreeBSD, and I am willing to host a build system like the Parabola PCR based on the Linux-libre and FreeBSD-libre kernels, mainly supporting Parabola and Trisquel. I also need to compose my own frpm, Free packages manager, and the above liberated build system into my own libre operating system, powered by RPM sources, whose kernels are Linux-libre and FreeBSD-libre, offering rolling and LTS distro, the rolling one is aimed to be as cutting edged as Parabola, and the LTS one is to be released every 3 years and supported for 5 years. I am also willing to compose a screensaver, a display manager, a family of wm, all for LXQt, finally a browser of the Q5×Q4×Tor frontends. I also want a embedded systems team porting to different hardware architectures, to help a practice of the GNU/hardware. Will FSF and GNU sponsor for this free software corporation?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
I think we are all involved. I already posted that we can test the trisquel 8 release and provide feedbacks and bug reports. I had a small bug that I reported but following updates solved it and I closed it. I am using the 8 as my main distro on my main home computer. It is stable. For desktop usage I don't see any problem. for more critical use cases I would use the 7. Latest version of packages are not a requirements unless bring critical functionalities missing in the previous.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel 8... where are you?
This project could be more ambitious, a good exemple of a community project with good gouvernance is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framasoft Talking about the project without the people actually involved in it is a pure waste of time..
Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
Any ZYpp-libre, urpmi-libre, FreeBSD-libre ones? Connochaet is looked aging to me, which I also need to be as cutting edged as Parabola (pacman), rpm (ZYpp and urpmi), FreeBSD.

I may be going a tad off-topic in relation to where the thread's heading but to answer the 1st question, the "certified" free distros plus maybe Free Slack?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
There is nothing wrong with an LTS release like Ubuntu 16.04 as there are point release ISOs that bring in newer kernel and xservee installed by default. Oh and there's Snap packages.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source: What are missing?
Yes the "open source" summits are focused too much to software pro, and SOFTWARE LAYPEOPLE (better for your term "users not also being developers") are quite unwelcome to those summits. Unlike us, the open source communities (regardless online forums or offline summits) treat freedoms of software laypeople for almost nothing. Debian, the system itself is software laypeople friendly but its forums and BugZilla are software laypeople unfriendly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Posteo vs Tutanota vs OpenMailbox
Disroot looks good so far.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
At the very least it would be nice if debian would besides the fact of not entangling the init, would also at the very least have only contrib or better yet have neither... meh...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Posteo vs Tutanota vs OpenMailbox
I donated some money to disroot and use their cloud storage. :) Their security is pretty decent judging by their ciphers compared to most email providers...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
"Cleaning" the Ubuntu main and universe pools? Are the 2 pools come with free software but which "might" be dependent on nonfree, just like the contrib pool from Debian? Though under the Linux-libre kernel, why we still need to manually clean nonfree? Aren't they auto-removed against our Linux-libre kernel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How should I proceed if I want to put parabola on my x200 fde devuan laptop?
not that I need to write this for those of you who know what fde is, but full disk encryption and grub modified to not need to type in a lot of commands. is what I meant.

I was just going to add, why is he asking where are you... this isn't freakin scooby doo. ;) xD
[Trisquel-users] How should I proceed if I want to put parabola on my x200 fde devuan laptop?
I am wondering if I need to do anything special to install parabola or devuan without error...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Thinkpenguin Korora update: Left side of single touchpad button broken :(
free software* laptop sound card driver. Also, a pic for the curious: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/files/kororapenguinnotebook/03.jpg
[Trisquel-users] Thinkpenguin Korora update: Left side of single touchpad button broken :(
It's a little weird that they used a single touchpad button. But the left side of the single button wasn't clicking well, so I pressed too hard on it, and now it doesn't work. For the time being, I have switched to a wireless mouse. P.S. Another problem is that the sound card isn't that good but I guess that's the price for using a free laptop sound card driver.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
If you require frequent software updates then don't use Trisquel or any other LTS distro. For my purposes I find that I do benefit from having the newest software, so I've switched to Parabola. However, I still support Trisquel and highly recommend it for the majority of desktop users who only require regular security updates and occasional software updates.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
I think that for non technical people the companies you mentioned do a good job. But we should also look forward to the next steps. I am wondering if the same companies invest to make research on how to free the modern laptop
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
As I've said elsewhere, my beef with Purism is mostly their name. They're not purists. It's arguably legitimate to offer maximum freedom currently possible on current hardware, while striving to get to full freedom including the BIOS and bootloader. But to not merely imply but to claim via their name that they are purists and you're getting pure freedom from them is misleading marketing. ThinkPenguin does similar respectable work - selling PCs with stock BIOS but with Trisquel as the OS, plus accessories that support full freedom. But the name and marketing doesn't pretend purism. If Purism had a different name, something like FreedomQuest or FreedomJourney or FreedomPath that implied that their buyers don't get full freedom now but hopefully will later, that would be honest. If anyone should call themselves "Purism", it would be companies like Minifree or Libiquity. Technoethical and Vikings sell some devices or PCs that lack FSF RYF certification so they wouldn't qualify. Not a slam on them - they do good work too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
The link you attached is 2015 and the information not completely true. They do ship with coreboot when the author of the article was pretty sure they would not do. I saw their hardware listed on the coreboot repo. They deactivate the intel ME as I did. They cite the sources of the me_cleaner. Personally I consider free (libre) a computer where the ME is deactivated and where coreboot is installed. That is enough for me. This allows to push to free all the recent hardware. I think that the FSF and libreboot will be pushed to accept the new hardware since soon most of the people will consider having all the ME code erased irrelevant if the ME is deactivated. I am happy I didn't purchased a new(old) x200 laptop and I instead learnt how to partially free my modern one. Now I am studying coreboot and if I can port it to my laptop.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source: What are missing?
Ironically, the reason I know about the free software movement at all is because the VideoLAN forum guidelines page links to this page: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
Packages from the contrib repository are libre, but have non-free dependencies, so they can't be used without also using non-free software. Using a deblobbed kernel is important, but it will not prevent the installation of other non-free software. In order to be certain that you are not using non-free software, you should use a libre distro like Trisquel or Parabola that is committed to only including free software. Debian should not have the non-free and contrib repositories which is why it is not endorsed, but because they at least make sure that the main repository only includes libre software it is usable once you disable the other repositories. Mint has a single repository that contains non-free software, so it should not be used at all. Magic Banana's comment explains the problems with Ubuntu. There is also no reason to attempt to liberate Ubuntu, as you would be repeating a task already accomplished with Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Open source: What are missing?
Open source is a development model. Their priority is the production of technically superior software(?) that the user(?) can leverage upon. In the process of making the software more powerful(?), it is not(?) a sin in the open source camp to add bits of proprietary software, including long strings of numbers (Non-free binary blobs, to be specific.) in its kernel, Linux. They emphasize the convenience(?) the user(?) gets with such practice. Such open source software is in fact, depriving its users their fundamental human rights of freedom of computing and freedom of privacy. But the sad fact is that even free software projects like VLC media player developed by VideoLAN project uses the term open source in their official website and in their user manuals.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Open source: What are missing?
*User* (not developer) freedoms are missing from "open source" talks. They will never be added! You seem to believe that "open source" preexists "free software". It is the other way around: fifteen years *after* RMS started the Free Software movement, the term "open source" was coined... to specifically *not* talk about user freedoms and *not* criticize proprietary software developers. https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html (especially the she section "Fear of Freedom") explains it well. Stallman being the author of that text, you may believe that it is biased. It is not: it is what really happened and "open source" proponents do not say otherwise. Read http://producingoss.com/en/introduction.html#free-vs-open-source (a section in the book "Producing Open Source Software"), for instance. From a practical (rather than philosophical) point of view, "free" and "open source" are almost identical (but philosophy matters!): there are a couple of obscure licenses that the OSI deems "open source" but that the FSF does not accept (for being unclear). "Security" and "privacy" are features (like stability, accessibility, internationalization, user-friendliness, etc.). User freedoms are more fundamental than that. They do not depend on what the program does but on the rules (the license) that govern its use, modification and redistribution.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
See https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html like mason suggests. Although the sections in Ubuntu are better than nothing, they are not perfect. Trisquel's project is a lot about "cleaning" packages in Ubuntu's main and universe: https://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel/ubuntu-purge and https://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel/package-helpers
[Trisquel-users] Re : Disconnection from network after waking computer from sleep
If so, just boot the kernel you want and remove the newer kernels (using the package manager).
[Trisquel-users] Re : How do I change the boot order so that my libreboot boots first from the USB drive?
For Abrowser, you could try starting with a profile (where you could import your bookmarks and so on). For the main menu, there is a utility named "Main Menu" in the "System Settings" to edit it the way you wish. For the service failing at init, investigation is needed, like mason wrote.
[Trisquel-users] Re : jdk 9 install
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java#OpenJDK_Java_9 suggests to compile it. I would first try to manually download https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/openjdk-9-jdk and to try to install it (with 'sudo dpkg -i' or double-clicking on the .deb file if you installed GDebi), discover what dependencies are missing, get them on https://packages.ubuntu.com and try to install them, etc. It is dependency hell but it sometimes has an happy end. You do not want to go as far as substituting basic packages such as libc6 though!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Software-update arrives at a brick wall
Does it write something on the root partition (in /tmp for instance)? If so, (little) space must first be freed by hand.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
Hey Magic, If you look at the dates of some of the posts, I do have a reason to be worried. That first link was dated "Sun, 10/02/2016 - 13:10" How am I wrong to STILL be worried after this is still in Alpha?
[Trisquel-users] Open source: What are missing?
Like Richard Stallman and his GNU and FSF heavy works, I have also researched for what are missing from the keyword "open source", i can tell here first, we will have only freedom of developments like derivatives and packaging, and freedoms hacking and testing what else are missing, but honestly our security "might" be most likely incurred and our privacy needs to be almost always broken, for the daily practice esp you are not a developer, a hacker, or a tester "nonfree" Linux and BSD distro are very often not a good idea. What will be your furthermore views for what are missing in "open source" in an operating system which is not under an 100% free kernel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Other GNU/Linux-libre distro?
I have just now got a research from the official Debian wiki, which contrib "might" be dependent on nonfree (like most Deb derivatives, for Ubuntu nonfree is called "restricted" or "multiverse"), though DFSG compitable like the main pool, but dnt worry I have appended Linux-libre to prevent myself against nonfree which I need to use contrib.
