You can easily have Trisquel 9's default kernel in Trisquel 8: install the package named "linux-image-generic-hwe-8.0". It is in Trisquel 8's repository.

How do you graphically launch LibreOffice? Double clicking on an executable? Using a "launcher"?

OMG Beko, it worked. The solution was to install the "linux-image-extra-hwe-16.04-edge", which not only installed all the required ethernet Realtek modules but also support for NTFS which was not installed with the Linux-generic kernel. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Perhaps try reinstalling the netinstall and changing the kernel you choose when installing. That might help with the ethernet drivers maybe?

I see. Could it be that the problem appeared at some point in the long life of Trisquel 7? Otherwise it must have appeared with the first Trisquel 8 kernel, but I would have thought the updates would have brought newer kernel since.
