Re: [Trisquel-users] Is H264 mp4 readable on Trisquel?

2016-07-22 Thread Adonay Felipe Nogueira
Yes, if you have installed "trisquel-codecs" package, it should play
well (the package depends on other packages that allow this).

The packages included here are all free/libre, the issue with H.264 is
another one. Although there *are* non-[free/libre] packages that also
allow society to play/decode videos made with such video encoder (and
this cannot be included in free/libre distributions like Trisquel), the
main issue is that H.264 is patented in some countries.

The GNU Free System Distribution Guidelines *does-not* impose that
free/libre distributions "should" or "shouldn't" support usage of such
patented formats, see:

https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html

Of course, we can also make occasional mistakes, and you can help
spotting the mistakes if you want, see:

https://trisquel.info/en/project/issues

https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-help

Make sure that the codec used to make the video is really H.264, if you
have "libav-tools" package installed, do:

avprobe "[Path to file]" |& grep 'Stream.*h264'

Well, I see that the license isn't libre.
VLC seems to be able to play that, but not always:

What's your experience?

I was thinking of something really short, you know, 30 seconds or something.
I see your point though. Maybe for the second batch :)

hiya hack, yeah we find it takes too long to explain the whole thing in one
go, we need someone to "ask questions of" if you know what i mean. we tried
the "explaining" video it just didn't work, and it's because there's nobody
else in the world actually doing this!

but, also, i don't mind that we won't be doing 2,000 or 20,000 straight away,
it would be too much: we need to go gently and make sure everybody is happy.

[Trisquel-users] Possible to Transfer Icecat files to Evolution?

2016-07-22 Thread john_harvey
Moved my files over to a new notebook. Icecat is having the problem of
unable to send attachments, so I can't use it and will go with Evolution.

Question: can I transfer my email lists and settings etc from Icecat to
Evolution ( as I might with Thunderbird) Or are they different animals?

Thank you.

lkcl, I was just thinking about something: Why don't you try to make a short
but dynamic video about the whole thing?

You know, the fast happy music kind, with fun animations and bullet points. I
know I sound sarcastic but seriously, it's a format that packs a punch, and
it's easy to share.

I have yet to read the whole thing, but to me, this is what it's about, and
what's the coolest things about it:

* credit card-sized computer. Super awesomely practical.
* printing laptop parts (like one frame default color, another one with a
brighter color, and the last one with like way too much colors with "uh..."
written on the frame, just for the fun effect.
* 100% libre. This one is hard to illustrate in a simple AND appealing way.
Portraying the non-free constraints is probably the easiest part (with short
real-life examples).
* To not make the video too long or too hard to digest, I'd add all the other
points in a fast-paced rythm for a few seconds. And then point to the funding
page of course, and maybe a contact adress (or this forum's thread).

The lack of current CPU and RAM super capacity shouldn't be hidden, but
shouldn't be put forward too soon though, I suppose. Same for the
connectivity.

Anyway, just food for thought. A punchy video is worth a thousand words.
Beats my short attention span any day.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Unable to remove programs

2016-07-22 Thread lcerf
If that implies making an XFS partition smaller, then it is "normal": XFS
cannot be shrunk. XFS is the default filesystem Trisquel's installer uses for
/home.

[Trisquel-users] Re : I'm leaving Trisquel

2016-07-22 Thread lcerf
Thank you very much! I believe it is easier for newbies to copy-paste to the
terminal and execute a single command line (rather than copy to a file, make
it executable and execute it). That is why I kept the single line (notice
also that your 'print ""' has one supernumerary level of indentation). I
actually applied the fix in a different way: 'tr -d ,' deletes all commas
right after https://trisquel.info/en/donate is downloaded. If I can avoid
'gensub', I usually do so (I always have to go back to the documentation for
'gensub' and the likes)...

https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/financial-information was updated accordingly.
The sums now match those of Ignacio.Agullo.

It would seem so. If it is a new installation and you have no important data
there, then yes, purge your /home/John and then move the /home/John from the
temp folder into /home
