I agree with albertoefg, lightweightness might not be prior #1 in default
roll. IMHO accessibility and language supp goes before in the default roll.

However, I do see a case for trisquel-mini. Even there a basic feeling of
trisquel is is good to be kept. Going dwm + uzbl + mc + st might not be it.
There's always netinstall for very tiny setups. :)

Lightweight isn't everything. Trisquel being geared toward beginners, it has
to also be usable.
So if PCmanFM recognises external drives like Nautilus/(probably) Caja does,
then ok. If not, it's just too lightweight in my opinion.

My short experience with GNU/Linux (and other non-GNU but free software) led
me to go as lightweight as possible as long as I don't waste time trying to
make basic (or advanced) functions work.

"What is Trisquel's policy on Snap packages? Are they allowed?"

I don't know that Trisquel has a policy on Snap packages one way or the
other. My proposal is that all software added to Trisquel be compliant with
https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html
regardless of how it is packaged.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Howto reactivate laptop's NIC (it worked fine and still works under Parabola)

2016-12-04 Thread jason

Actually, that one is a meta pacakge not the actual kernel.

The exact one to download depends on the CPU architecture. Normally the
package manager will figure that out automatically but since they're doing it
manually:

For 64-bit:
https://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/pool/main/l/linux-upstream/linux-image-4.1.36-gnu_4.1.36-gnu-1.0_amd64.deb

For 32-bit:
https://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/pool/main/l/linux-upstream/linux-image-4.1.36-gnu.pae_4.1.36-gnu-1.0_i386.deb

For 32-bit without support for PAE:
https://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/pool/main/l/linux-upstream/linux-image-4.1.36-gnu.nonpae_4.1.36-gnu-1.0_i386.deb

Once the kernel is installed and the computer is restarted it's important to
then go and set up the repository as indicated in the directions on the
website and install one of the meta packages listed. This is important. ***If
you don't do this you won't get updates. Ever.***

The new Pokemon3D is not related to us. It's a continuation that nilllzz,

We will try to port the game within a month. It's not hard to do a working
version, I have tested the game in OSX and Ubuntu already, but we don't know
how much bugs we will encounter.
In the previous post you mentioned about how we will distibute the game for
linux with mono support platforms. It won't be hard to build the game from
the source code, but because this is purely a .NET code, without any native
code, we will distribute an universal linux build. Maybe mono will run
without any problem the Windows build on linux.

Exciting news this new Trisquel Mate version :-) I couldn’t use Trisquel 7
Gnome with my graphic card but Trisquel Mate should be fine.
(https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/nvidia-fx5200-geforce-7200-gs) This card was
perfectly allright with Debian but it became a little flaky (due to old age
perhaps)

Mate looks really good — tried it some time ago as Live Ubuntu Mate.

I currently run Debian Jessie (*no nonfree stuff*), so I’m a good candidate
for Trisquel, though I love Debian (all free).

I now have a new graphic card NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210], which
is a bit buggy with Nouveau and kernel 3.16.0-4-amd64. No idea if this is
because of the driver or the kernel. I’ll try to find out (it works fine
with Lubuntu, which doesn’t help me much since Lubuntu has nonfree blobs).

I would suggest using Iceweasel as a name for Abrowser, along with the
iceweasel logo, now that Debian can use the name Firefox and nolonger uses
the name Iceweasel or its logo. A good name and logo would be quite welcome,
IMHO. Trisquel always has lovely graphics (the Triquel logo, the Trisquel
desktop background images, along the years).

cheers

codecs since it has its own.

VLC is easier to use than GnomeMPlayer, though both could be included.

Transmission seems clearer than Deluge.

Liferea is far from essential since Thunderbird can retrieve RSS.

Pidgin and OTR

Simple Scan is really good now. :-)

Why should we install leafpad when we have pluma (default MATE graphical text
editor)?

what is the use of having it by default? Does it do the same job as GIMP?

vim and nano are both installed by default in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and also, I
think nano is suitable for newbies not vim. Anyway, it seems that
strikethroughing it is a better option that erasing it.

I would remove nano from the list, as we already have Vim.

This is an old machine, that I even bought used, because it's no longer sold
as new (and in any case, I wouldn't have that kind of money anyway).

But the thing is that for the last almost two years, the built-in ethernet
has been working flawlessly, so, there must be a way to recover that normal
behaviour, fixing whatever that has been changed (that I can't clear up by
myself, clearly...).

Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the real information you gave

_ Simple scan
_Eye Mate viewer

(this is the good default choice of Uruk 1.O)

Yes VLC is a good choice (it's by default with Uruk 1.0)

No, it's not a workaround but the fundamental passage of time at question
here. We can't possibly build drivers today for the gadgets of tomorrow.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Howto reactivate laptop's NIC (it worked fine and still works under Parabola)

2016-12-04 Thread riveravaldezmail

Thanks a lot, jxself, I will check that now.

Effectively, under Trisquel:

# uname -a
Linux trisquel 3.13.0-101-lowlatency #148+7.0trisquel2 SMP PREEMPT Thu Nov 10
11:45:49 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And with Parabola (LiveCD):

# uname -a
Linux parabolaiso 4.8.6-gnu-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Nov 1 10:19:01 UYT 2016
x86_64 GNU/Linux

So, it maybe could be worked out by a change in the kernel. I'll test it.

But this would be just a workaround: I know (as a couple-of-years-fact) that
the ethernet card worked perfectly, and it is being seen by the system. So, I
really would like to solve the actual problem.

Any clue on that? Any system/hardware info that I could post to help on clear
this issue?

Thanks *a lot*.
