Thanks,

I will wait then for the new T8

The old package can be installed via the add programs option in trisquel

Is there a preview when T8 will be launched?

Re: [Trisquel-users] INstalling Latest Verison of Kdenlive

Newer versions of kdenlive require KDE Framework 5, which is only coming in
Trisquel 8. You can try an oldish version if packages still exist or you're
willing to compile them...

Re: [Trisquel-users] [Trisquel 8.0] - Unar

2016-12-08 Thread onpon4
You're mistaking unar (command-line version of The Unarchiver) with unrar.
There is no such thing as "unar-free". unar supports all versions of RAR.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Could a Lutris fork be used to create a libre replacement for SteamOS?

2016-12-08 Thread onpon4
> I recall reading about its use in training for employees in some occupation
(medicine?), acting as a kind of simulator.

I see two problems with this:

1. Any simulation done this way is not the same as actually doing the job.
You don't actually feel anything, so how could it be? It's still far too
abstract.

2. There's the programming work you still have to do, which has to be
replicated for each individual job.

So what is the advantage of training someone this way, wasting resources and
not even training the person perfectly, when you can train them either on the
job (in cases where failing to do the job isn't going to cause particular
harm) or with a real, physical model (in cases where failing would be
catastrophic, like surgery)? Seriously, think about it: would you trust
someone to perform surgery on you if their only experience was with a VR
simulation of surgery, which for all you know might have bugs and doesn't
give him the same experience anyway? I wouldn't! Traditional training is
still going to be necessary, so you might as well forgo the VR step.

> It could also be a major frontier in 'blind testing' for hiring employees,
allowing the concept to be expanded to professions where a
document/image/etc. isn't enough to allow skill to be evaluated.

Possible, but only if VR becomes and remains ubiquitous, because otherwise
employees would be dooming themselves to having very few potential
candidates. Besides, mastering a simulation of a job is never going to be the
same as mastering the actual job. Even ignoring dynamic, unexpected
circumstances you have to deal with if the job can't just be automated,
there's still the fact that you're not manipulating real objects, you're
pretending to. And then factor in the whole cost thing (how complex it is to
build the simulation and have it even remotely realistic).

> I doubt any similar practice will be possible in the free-software world
for a long time

Nonsense. It's perfectly possible; try Jitsi. I think using Jitsi through
meet.jit.si even lets you chat with people who don't have Jitsi, though don't
quote me on that.

> (why anybody would want to use small screens and keys anyway still eludes
me)

Because it's more portable. You can't fit a tablet in your pocket, you need a
whole case for it.

[Trisquel-users] INstalling Latest Verison of Kdenlive

2016-12-08 Thread lourenco . azevedo

Greetings,

did someone installed the latest version of Kdenlive?

I tried this following the site advice and didn't work with trisquel.

For Ubuntu >= 15.04 and other *buntu based distros like LinuxMint you can
download latest Kdenlive from our official PPA’s:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kdenlive

On top of that I couldn't remove the PPA with the instructions given

Note: you can easily remove our PPA and revert back to official distro
package using:

sudo ppa-purge ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

unrar-free "Can't handle some archives in the RAR 3.0 format natively."

Unar is very interesting alternative that should be in Trisquel. Why? Because
we must create the best, libre, GNU/Linux distro ever. If we can support
printers - we should add support to system (cups), if we can scan, we should
give a software for that. If we can extract rar files - we should give unar
to ISO

Re: [Trisquel-users] What *academic* search engine do you recommend?.

2016-12-08 Thread Adonay Felipe Nogueira
I do have a list of places to use for searching, but I almost always
find such specific search engines to actually be missing most of the
findings I make, specially because they apparently only deal with text,
not other forms of scientific resource.

So, instead I suggest you to search on normal search engine and when you
find something interesting, do a basic reputation/background check on
who the author of such content is. If such person has at least one true
academic publication (only counting text in this case) in another place
(if he's writting in his own blog, or group blog, or if it's an
audio/video content) or in another issue or edition of the same journal,
then his article can **probably** be used as a reference.

To give you an idea, most of the good publications about the importance of
free/libre software movement/philosophy/actvism I have found aren't in
the academic search engines I have right now, and I'm not talking about
GNU.org, nor FSF.org, nor SFLW's website, nor FaiF.us, nor the FSF
sister organization's websites, nor Copyleft.org, nor SFConservancy's
website. Interestingly enough, some of these publications don't have
proper license, so this leaves a big question mark until I get the time
to contact the authors and ask which license the publication is under.

If you do insist on a list of academic search engines, though, here's
mine (most of then aren't search engines, but libraries. Besides, most
of the academic search engines existing in the world come with an onus:
requirement to run non-free software, through a way which you probably
have heard about, that is, JavaScript, but the language doesn't matter,
it would still be an issue with other language):

"Sadly a few users seem to have forgotten this, and have decided to stop

Besides the optional non-free repository, stock Debian is free software and
both the testing and unstable repositories are up to date without sacrificing
freedom. Its just that Trisquel is based off of the LTS releases of Ubuntu
and the Trisquel releases often come out a year or more after the LTS they
are based on.

You now, I never got involve in the discussion because I was very happy with
trisquel 7. If I needed a newer software I was just able to compile it.
Security wise, Trisquel 7 life cycle has still a long way too, so no reason
to worry about that either.

It wasn't until a few days ago that I crush to a brick wall and I really
needed those trsiquel 8 juicy updates for a specific program, and I felt
relieve that 8 alpha have just came out. I finally knew what was all the buzz
about.

I totally agree that freedom is and should always be the most important, but
freedom hasn't have to be against technology or progress.

I do agree that complaining will not take us anywhere. If you really want to
help free software progress and well been why not contribute in any way?
Maybe financially for example.

I'm not passing this month without contributing some extra money :) . It
surely felt good when the software that I needed was available when I did.
And for that I'm really thankful.

And after all, isn't one of free software objectives help your friends? Thank
you all.

The Openbox menu (I gotta find a way to integrate it to i3wm, I like it this

avoid amlogic. gpl voilators.

i made a pledge for https://www.crowdsupply.com/eoma68/micro-desktop
I would strongly recommend it for you too. you can use the computer card
on its own as a SBC, using the usb otg port and micro hdmi and for extra
ports maybe the breakout connector or the micro desktop.

the a20 soc has free software video decode. i know it can do hd/720p i
think it can do 1080p but im not sure, need to check, cant remmber
clearly :)

web browser video playback would need hardware video decode support. idk
if that exists. can use addons that auto open youtube vids in video
player like mpv. works well for me. easy too. the addon is Video Assistant.

with the a20 soc using mobile versions of pages are recommend. luke -the
guy behind the rhombus-tech project and eoma68 standard- is working a on
4gb ram double speed or more... computer card. so theres that to look
forward too. check out the arm-netbook mailing list where these things
where talked about recently. [2]

2016-12-08 Thread mtlben
You are correct, and i would just add a precision, because some people are
not aware of the following point (I, for one, wasn't until recently). The
five years of support only apply to the packages in Ubuntu's Main repository.
There is no support from Canonical for the packages in Universe, which are
present in Trisquel's repository.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Just a friendly reminder that Trisquel 7.0 is not outdated

2016-12-08 Thread agullo
Trisquel 7 is at the half of his life, in fact. Trisquel is largely a subset
of the Ubuntu distribution (though with Linux-Libre instead of Linux), so
updates are provided from Ubuntu repositories, which for LTS versions provide
five years of support.

Trisquels life is Ubuntus life minus the release delay. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is
supported til April, 2019, so Trisquel 7 is too. As Trisquel 7 was released
six months after Ubuntu 14.04 LTs, it gets a life of four years and a half
instead of five years. As for Trisquel 8, if it was released as soon as in a
pair of weeks, it would get a life of four years and five months.

[Trisquel-users] Best Choice for a Single Board Computer (Today)

2016-12-08 Thread myway . 1

Hi,

There was a thread from over a year ago about single board computers which
has been closed. There have been developments since then. If there is another
forum more suitable for this topic, please let me know. I haven't been able
to find one.

I need a single-board computer with:
1. A cost of $75 or less
2. supported (or very soon will be) by linux mainline kernel.
3. 64 bit

I want to get the most libre one possible that will do the things I need.

Those things are:

1. Surf the web smoothly and quickly without the need for browser extensions.
(Especially Facebook)

2. Stream 1080p from youtube smoothly.
3. Playback 1080i mpeg2 with good quality deinterlacing and rendering.

To achieve #1, will I need 2 GB of RAM? (My current SBC, the Intel Compute
Stick base model with Atom Z3735 and 1GB of RAM doesn't cut it)

To achieve #2 and #3, will I need a powerful processor? (powerful in the
world of ARM processors). My 1.33GHz Intel Atom quad core x86 processor
struggles with #3.

I like the work that linux-sunxi is doing (even though I don't like
Allwinner). Regarding the A64, the Pine forum is clear that it doesn't handle
video well with linux and won't do so anytime soon. But does that apply to
mpeg2? Does the reverse-engineering of the VPU help in that regard? Is a GPU
needed for 1080i video or is that just for video games?

Another one that has caught my eye is the Odroid C2 that uses Amlogic S905.
Plus there are many TV boxes (some calling themselves mini PC's) using the
Amlogic S905 with Android. Once there is mainline linux kernel support, could
a linux distro be put on these devices?

I don't know how freedom-supporting these Amlogic S905 devices are.
Does this project (http://linux-meson.com/doku.php) have anything to do with
freedom?

Thanks so much for your input.

Free Software is about ethics and respect freedom of the user. Free Software

But I think you miss one point: people were asking a lot by security updates.
And that is most important! Because, yes, window 7 is a lot older, but they

I don't mind using trisquel ( I love it) but I have to think twice if the
