Re: [Trisquel-users] AMD PSP technology
Would that include any proprietary blobs in the installation? I know coreboot packages them, but it's a Core 2 Duo machine, so...
Re: [Trisquel-users] EFF: Senate Puts ISP Profits Over Your Privacy
All of the Democrats (and independents that caucus with them) voted against it, and all but 2 Republicans voted for it (the other 2 did not vote). Also, Rand Paul (the "libertarian") wants to have it both ways -- he cosponsored the bill but then missed the vote so that he can say he didn't vote for it. Just an observation.

Try to get lenovo G505s and install coreboot. To install core boot on it you will need external flasher.
[Trisquel-users] Re : AMD PSP technology
I am not certain but I do not think that the A10-5745M processor has PSP because: "The Platform Security Processor (PSP) is built in on all Family 16h + systems (basically anything post-2013), and controls the main x86 core startup." https://libreboot.org/faq.html#amd-platform-security-processor-psp The "Richland" family the A10-5745M belongs to was released at the beginning of 2013. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_mobile_microprocessors#.22Richland.22_.282013.2C_32_nm.29
Re: [Trisquel-users] you cannot watch youtube on a libre software computer?
Nice essay! I like the idea of making the browser to install the scripts you want to use, instead of always downloading the script and executing it. Our browser could install every version of jQuery if we wanted, and other useful and free software JS. I think that LibreJS is useful, and I hope the project moves forward, as it hasn't got any commit since Thu Jun 23 14:30:11 2016. It's a way to force web developers to let people know what are executing. If you want to preserve freedom 0, just navigate with JS disabled and then check if you're willing to execute each JS file from a weblabel table (such as the one from my website: http://www.freakspot.net/pages/librejs.html). If you're okay with that, then go ahead and activate JS or just navigate using LibreJS; else just allow the scripts you want. However, this is really inconvenient, even for developers. Though LibreJS is not perfect, it serves the purpose of raising some awareness on the issue. Most of the time I use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/javascript-toggler/ to block all JavaScript unless I whitelist a website. Unfortunately, LibreJS is not yet very comfortable to use, as it is most times very slow. I hope more people help the development of LibreJS and solve some of its issues.
Re: [Trisquel-users] you cannot watch youtube on a libre software computer?
> but not all > JS is non-free, se we mustn't block it completely. There is an important technical reason why I say no JavaScript on Web pages should be executed, even if it's libre. My essay explains that reason: https://onpon4.github.io/other/kill-js/ This can be overridden by a very drastic overhaul in how a libre browser handles JavaScript, but it would be such tremendous work that I doubt anyone is going to be able to step up to it. LibreJS is not a solution, nor even a step in the right direction.
Re: [Trisquel-users] you cannot watch youtube on a libre software computer?
That's quite interesting question indeed, and the wording you used to ask makes up for a perfect answer: Since you asked "Is non libre software required to display youtube videos in the browser", my answer is: Unfortunatelly, in most sites in the Internet, society is forced to run some non-free software (through their browsers). In the technical side: this is done through JavaScript (hereon called JS), but not all JS is non-free, se we mustn't block it completely. In most web browsers, there is either two options: a. Allow all JS. b. Deny all JS. ... and this is bad, because some are indeed free/libre software. This is why we have GNU LibreJS, that only blocks non-free or might-be-non-free JS. Also, to watch YouTube videos, you do need youtube-dl, you can get it from Trisquel's package manager (and repositories), and can also get it from Guix. Both options are good in case some is outdated. However, please do not upload videos to YouTube, and please ask people not to upload videos there, it requires the visitors of the web site to run non-free software. -- - [[https://libreplanet.org/wiki/User:Adfeno]] - Palestrante e consultor sobre /software/ livre (não confundir com gratis). - "WhatsApp"? Re: [Trisquel-users] BIOS firmware on ARM
ARM SoCs don't have any of the same problems as CPUs from Intel and AMD. They typically include non-essential components (typically wireless and GPU hardware acceleration) which require blobs, but otherwise can work with an entirely libre software stack. The usual problem with ARM SoCs is that they don't work with mainline Linux; they instead need a specific modified Linux. I'm not familiar with Linux development, so someone who is can correct me if I'm wrong, but the impression I get is that this is caused mainly by use of kludges that Linus Torvalds is not interested in merging into mainline Linux for obvious reasons, and secondarily by many companies violating the GNU GPL when they develop these custom versions of Linux.
Re: [Trisquel-users] you cannot watch youtube on a libre software computer?
The YouTube website sends proprietary JavaScript code which loads the video. You really ought to disable JavaScript on your browser entirely if possible; I've outlined why here: https://onpon4.github.io/other/kill-js/ As for YouTube, you can watch its videos with an alternative program such as ViewTube (which is what I use): http://isebaro.com/viewtube/?ln=en
[Trisquel-users] you cannot watch youtube on a libre software computer?
My debian 8 64bit main mate computer can display youtube videos. I noticed some write about youtube dl. Is non libre software required to display youtube videos in the browser also on a computer which has a libre software system installed? Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] AMD PSP technology
Hi guys I am interested to know how can i check if i have AMD PSP installed on my Laptop and which version do i have? I am afraid for the security on the machine that i am using. Its HP laptop with AMD A10 5745M CPU and dedicated GPU(R7 M260 Topaz XT).Compared to the another Acer laptop with Beema E26110 the HP laptop has LED indicators for the ethernet. Now quite often my ethernet LED would remain active even after my Laptop has been turned OFF.Now sometimes it would happen when i turn OFF the Laptop(initiate through Ubuntu interface)my screen just goes into loading for the power OFF and remains there, and then if i would turn OFF laptop on the power button(by holding it until laptop turns OFF),my LED for the ehternet would turn OFF,only in this case, otherwise it would still remain ON. Now i already tried fixing this with newer BIOS firmware, but this did not worked. Also worth of mentioning both laptops have really low number of options in their BIOS and on A10 version overclocking is not available at all,as there are no GUI tool for GNU/linux and options inside BIOS are limited. So maybe you see my previous thread where i was interested in ARM,but when it comes to purchasing old Libreboot laptops such as X200 ,i am really skeptical as eroding is a problem and i do not like to buy used stuff . Regards

Re: [Trisquel-users] EFF: Senate Puts ISP Profits Over Your Privacy
It is not legitimate that ISPs can sell the users' private info and details to advertisers when we are already paying money for their service. This is totally insane. Customers should understand the seriousness of this issue and raise their voice to stop such misusing. Hope everyone will be aware of this topic. Re: [Trisquel-users] BIOS firmware on ARM
In my humble opinion, lack of understanding of the Linux kernel is probably not the biggest issue- ignorance in Chinese industry regarding free software seems to be far more of a problem, especially with the proliferation of non-upgradeable devices.
