Re: [Trisquel-users] ebook reader advice
True, but that refers to the *specific* exploit they tested. I'm sure you know better than to think that malware can never infect a GNU-Linux system. Getting a user to open an untrusted file from a random website, when the file type is one that is a *known vector for malware* on at least one OS, seems to me like exactly the sort of social engineering attack that could be used to overcome the baked-in security of GNU-Linux. This is especially the case when opening that file requires the user to install a non-default piece of software like xchm, a GUI layer developed by one person on SourceForge (known to be a source of untrustworthy binaries), for a library (CHMLib) developed by one person, that hasn't been worked on since 2009! https://github.com/jedwing/CHMLib Chances are neither of these programs has been security tested with Ubuntu 14.04, let alone with Trisquel specifically, nor the code put through a security audit. I might as well just put out a welcome mat outside my front door with my root passphrase printed on it, take a photo, and post it on 4Chan with my current IP address.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
When you quote text this way, the two left angle brackets you use to end the quote and all text following get left out of the message sent to the mailing list. I don't know why this is, but if you stick with only the two right angle brackets at the beginning of each quoted paragraph this won't happen, and it will still be clear which text is part of a quote.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trouble with add-ons on ABrowser
So you said, but as I indicated in the comment you're replying to, that didn't work for me.

As long as you can understand the English text that needs translating, I'm sure you'd do a great job of expressing its meaning clearly in Japanese.

Sorry, but what's a "ppd" driver ? I always install from dvd, installing from usb seems to have it's problems ...

Another solution might be to have two versions of each ISO, one with assistive techonlogies enabled by default and another with them disabled. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
No, PlayOnLinux uses Wine. PlayOnLinux is literally just designed to give proper configuration values for particular proprietary programs people want to install. Wine is just a Windows API compatibility layer; it's useful for running proprietary programs that aren't available for GNU/Linux, but it could also be used to run a libre program that uses the Windows API or DirectX, for example. Such libre programs do exist, although they are uncommon. One example is a program called "XM Solitaire", which has actually been ported to the OpenPandora using Wine: http://repo.openpandora.org/?page=detail&app=xmsol-ptitseb
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
Then why bother with making wine... Isn't that the same concept...?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
There's no use for it. The whole point of PlayOnLinux is to play proprietary games that are only available for Windows.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Mini is super nice !
I was able to download it and install it on a usb. I did have trouble with installing a downloaded ppd driver. The system freezes up. I stopped after three failed attempts.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
Why does no one, make a winetricks-libre/playonlinux-libre for trisquel/parabola?

Thanks. It cleared my questions some degree. But I can think that testing and reporting are very important and helpful works, but I also want a something gaudy and jolly work like a festival which we all can join and excites us..., if can. Though just using Trisquel excited me. I am interest in translating of course. It seems fun. But I have thought that it is difficult for me to translate that since my English skill. But since you gave me the mention, mind as well consult my friend on that. Then I might ask david san. It seems you are also one of the main characters of the project though, I don't know well. Every Cuban musician has exceptional skill. Literally exceptional. You might like it.

The screen reader should definitely be enabled by default, but how to disable it is a very common question. I took a stab at writing a wiki page explaining how. https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/disabling-orca-screen-reader signature.asc Description: PGP signature

...one has Windows 7. I do not want to pay for Windows 8. Free upgrade to win 10 still works. Just saying. I don't think you should use win but MS gives it out for free contrary to their marketing hype that the free upgrade days are done and over with. https://www.techradar.com/news/windows-10-free-upgrade-is-still-alive-and-kicking-in-2018
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
We have those manuals: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installation-guide Checking whether the instructions still work (if not, correcting them) would be nice. In particular, the last update on https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/install-trisquel-windows-dual-boot-0 is almost five years old. But that requires having at hand an installed Windows/Mac/Ubuntu system, what many of us have not.
[Trisquel-users] Re : ebook reader advice
The link you gave say: Check Point researcher Liad Mizrachi has conducted research showing that .chm files can be used to execute code on a victim computer running Microsoft Windows Vista, and higher. Although GNU/Linux is certainly "higher" than any version of Windows, I do not think that sentence includes it! :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] ebook reader advice
Thanks for the tip MagicBanana. So I need to install xchm from the Trisquel repos? You are confident I am not putting my system at risk by using that to open a .CHM file from a random website, even give its capacity for malware delivery (as shown in the link I gave)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to permanently disable/remove Orca Screen Reader?
Orca is turned on by default to make Trisquel more accessible to users who cannot see the screen. I think it's great that Trisquel supports non-visual users in this way, after all it's much harder for them to turn it on, than for the rest of use to turn it off. That said, it would also be great if there was a *very* obvious way to turn Orca off when beginning installation if it isn't needed. It would be equally great if turning it off during installation automatically turned it off in the installed system too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
Given that Trisquel, like its Ubuntu base, is meant to be the most user-friendly distro for people new to GNU-Linux, what are the recommended methods for installing Trisquel for people currently using: * Windows * Mac * Ubuntu Is there any kind of 'introducing Trisquel' wiki page or document that we can distribute to people, encouraging them to try it for the first time, and supplying these installation instructions? If so, will it need to be updated for Trisquel 8?
