Re: [Trisquel-users] why do some prefer to build software from source code?
if you compile and install from source will you get security updates? or do you have to just remember which programs you complied and update them manually?
Re: [Trisquel-users] why do some prefer to build software from source code?
so if i wanted a newer version of gnu nano(just an example) and i compiled the latest version of gnu nano into a deb or yum file and installed it. and then its discovered that nano has a bug that gives away your root password or something like that would it get security updates?

Re: [Trisquel-users] For free desktop email programs, Geary is still an option
wel you could just do that and then fill the rest of the file with zero's to make it bigger and if it needs root then just do rm -r /home/user/*
Re: [Trisquel-users] I Succeeded to convince a few Is the use of free software
but having free hardware is near impossible from BIOS firmware to the router that came with my ISP TAA DAA! http://shop.gluglug.org.uk/product/libreboot-x200/ https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-broadband-router-gnu-linux-tpe-nwifirouter2 also the gpu: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/geforce-8400gs-1gb-pci-express-20-video-card-gnulinux-full-low-profile-brackets
Re: [Trisquel-users] For free desktop email programs, Geary is still an option
that then depends on weather you trust that developer i think its just good practise to compile from source if your download a program outside your main repo's
Re: [Trisquel-users] X60 Libreboot Trisquel 7 Overheating

Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm missing the community that was available when using nonfree software
cookies enabled. you can use cookies with libre software i assume you do this for privacy reasons though as-well as freedom reasons but you could just make your browser delete cookies when you logout Where do all of you hang out online? here: https://trisquel.info/en/forum and here: http://gbdev.gg8.se/forums/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pulseaudio increase Cpu temperature
The laptop has no cards inside(no mini pci wifi/no modem card...but i left the cables anyway)and no speaker connected. partly to up your post i will ask this why are you playing audio with no speaker?
Re: [Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel :)
i found a tutorial here for ubuntu 14 as trisquel is based on ubuntu 14 it should work: http://itsfoss.com/install-kde-plasma-ubuntu-1410/ but be sure to only install packages that you trust and its best to compile form source i also found this on the official kde site: https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Packages
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pulseaudio increase Cpu temperature
i also had this problem with unetbootin try with the gnewsnese image using this command dd if=gnewsense.iso of=/dev/your_device_here
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pulseaudio increase Cpu temperature
yes you can change the default grub menu to have two boot options http://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_cbfs.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone here from China?
for cloud services i recommend owncloud owncloud is a libre cloud server that you can run yourself the data is stored locally so you can have fully control over it and can encrypt it etc using a libreboot machine would be good as can literly encrypt everything

dose this happen with other distros and pulseaudio?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone here from China?
out of interest why do you need 36TB of space? are you backing up the internet??
Re: [Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel :)
first out of interest why do you need a 8GB gpu and 32GB of ram!!?? second: synaptic loads practically instantly on my pc: 16GB 2400Mhz 3.5GHZ 8 core integrated graphics 128GB ssd 1TB HDD it also loads fast on my thinkpad x60 1.66ghz single core 2.25gb ram 667Mhz 500GB HDD so this should not happen
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus Zenbook UX305FA-USM1 compatible with free software
NOTICE: i don’t own this laptop this is a assessment based on my personal knowledge and some info of the laptop found online It also has windows 8, but that's not a problem either because it will be removed. some new laptops make it very hard to install anything but windows 8(from experience) with the new secure boot so keep this in mind check when you buy it if you can install other operating systems on the machine # it uses intel integrated graphics which works well with free software but i would think you would need to use a adaptor for the wifi/bluetooth so i think it would work(with wifi/bluetooth adpaters) but it would be far from ideal and as it has a modern non-free BIOS you would have no guarantee of what anti-features it would have such as deliberately making some hardware not work, backdoors, etc VERDICT: i reccomend asking if you can try the laptop for a few hours or a day before you buy it to see if everything works well with free software from a freedom point of view try thinkpenguin or even better gluglug
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone here from China?
this one is apparently very reliable and it has 8TB of storage and $260 http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_archive_hdd_review_8tb so i guess you could get two of these or more if you have the money 8TB isn’t bad i think you will have a hard time finding affordable cloud storage that gives you 36TB i personally think your best option is to host it yourself

Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
Now comes the hardest part. Install libreboot without bricking the machine xD for the x60 if you know how to use a terminal then its much easier than it looks as the install is mostly automated with scripts but if your worried about bricking you could ask here or at the #libreboot irc channel and pepole would gladly guide you Tonight I'll sleep well knowing I own a x60 tablet compatible with libreboot. Awesome :) awesome indeed btw dose the tablet work well with trisquel?

Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm missing the community that was available when using nonfree software
what websites you use that need js?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I access my computer from anywhere in the world from another computer?
1. install openssh on the computer you want to remotly log into sudo apt-get install openssh 2. port forward that computer at port 22(default for ssh) 3. logon from another computer with this command replacing the example ip adress with your routers externel ip e.g ssh root@77.23.11.22 now you can remotly connnect to that computer through the internet just make sure you have a strong password! i think there is a way if you search it to have remote desktops but i have not tried it
Re: [Trisquel-users] Are libblueray/libdvdcss legal?
i agree just because something is illegal dose not make it immoral however just because something is moral dose not mean you wont be thrown in prison or fined for it and as i don’t rely want a criminal record its a good idea to check what would happen if you broke that law

the following post was originally posted here: https://www.fsf.org/associate/forum/community/153274702 but noone replyed to i am posting here start of post: i know you can use libblueray and libdvdcss to unencript encripted dvd's and blueray disks on gnu/linux but i also noticed according to Wikipeida alot of gnu/linux distros dont include these libarys for legal reasons are these libarys illegal in some countries? if so why?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I Succeeded to convince a few Is the use of free software
mistake by me the above is hardware that works with free software
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
I can do with just an old PC, it will be perfect. :D but remember to check the watts its using because if its running 24/7 you don’t want to add to much to your electricity bill i have a old pc that uses about 120 watts which would costs £144 a year(with my electric provider) if i left it on 24/7 most pc's use alot less than this but its good to check if you don’t need anything too powerfully i recommend using a getting a single board computer my raspberry pi(sadly requires some non-free software to run it) uses just 3.5 watts costing just £4.2 a year the fsf recommend some good single board computers here(obviously make sure they can connect to the internet before you get them as a server!): https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/single-board-computers the beagle-board seems the best one for a server the only problems according to the fsf are wifi and blue-tooth dosent work without non-free blobs although you can get a usb adaptor to fix this problem and the gpu and video decoding drivers dont work with out non-free blobs but you don’t need any of theses for the server as it has a Ethernet port and the gpu is not a problem as you probberly wont be running a fancy DE as its a server

[Trisquel-users] thinkpad x200 not external monitor not working
i have a x200 thinkpad that i tried to connect to a tv with a VGA cable when i connected it the message telling me it wasn’t connected disappeared but all i got was a blank screen its running libreboot but i was told on #libreboot that this was nothing to do with libreboot and external monitors work for other people using libreboot so its probably something to do with the os i am running(trisquel 7) dose anyone else on this forum have a x200 running libreboot or anyone who knows what my problem could be?
Re: [Trisquel-users] thinkpad x200 not external monitor not working
http://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_boot_installer.html i think its because libreboot's grub payload tries to parse ISOLINUX boot-loaders(a bootloader lots of distros use the live usb/cd/dvd's) when booting from a usb or cd/dvd drive and some times it may fail?... you can almost certainly boot anything with a linux kernel on libreboot but you have to it manualy please correct me if i am wrong
Re: [Trisquel-users] How do bug upgrades work in Trisquel?
Who guarantees you that nothing was added to the deb? i wonder if there’s some kind of checksum a compiler can generate when there’s specific source code that you can compare to the binary? anyone tried this before?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
i used a watt meter to measure the power usage
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cheap servers to buy?
it runs raspbian: https://www.raspbian.org/ the pi port of debian and i have made some changes to it by default the non-free repo's are enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list and a few non-free programs are installed you can check if non-free debian packages are installed using vrms also and remove all the stuff it detects but still the program that start up the raspberry pi is non-free and apparently stops you from using decoding hardware for decoding mpeg-2 and VC-1 without a specific key
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installation alongside Windows 7

Re: [Trisquel-users] thinkpad x200 not external monitor not working
if your running any gnu/linux distro it will work for flashing its just some are a bit harder to boot if your booting from a usb stick if its already on the hard-drive you will have no problems
