Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Etiona
Since it's secret you probably can't reveal it, but I am curious: What do you mean by "a secret microcomputer" and what do you use a such for?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pinephone Community Edition
Just want to confirm that chaosmonk's claim, that "installing a custom ROM on an Android phone is very easy." is true. I have very little technical skills/knowledge and have done it several times. The first few times I did have to go a little back and forth in the process and instructions and occasionally an install fails. That said, it really is very easy. Go on with it!
[Trisquel-users] No .asc file for etonia?
There doesn't seem to be an .asc file for etonia on http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso-etiona/iso/ Hence the iso can't be verified with gpg. Am I in the wrong directory or am I missing something else?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem installing RIOT
yeah, I was pretty amazed to ses the MS office icons on the mate on trisquel desktop!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem installing RIOT
Thanks, nadebula.1984, Your question led me to investigate Magic Banana's answer further. The thing is, that 'https://packages.riot.im/debian' doesn't show up in the 'Other software' tab under 'Software and updates' (in Mate's control center. But I realised that I can make the change from 'Flidas' to 'Xenial' in the etc/apt/sources.list.d/riot-list.
[Trisquel-users] Problem installing RIOT
When trying to install RIOT I encounter the same issue as LaurantM (apparently - I don't really speak French): https://trisquel.info/en/forum/probl%C3%A8me-install-riot When following the instructions at https://riot.im/download/desktop/ I get: ~$ sudo apt update Hit:1 http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas InRelease Hit:2 http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas-security InRelease Hit:3 http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas-updates InRelease Ign:4 https://packages.riot.im/debian flidas InRelease Err:5 https://packages.riot.im/debian flidas Release 404 Not Found Reading package lists... Done E: The repository 'https://packages.riot.im/debian flidas Release' does not have a Release file. N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default. N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. In response to LaurantM MagicBanana's seems to be advising to go via https://packages.riot.im/debian. I have tried that but seems to fail. I have downloaded .asc .gpg and the .deb files via https://packages.riot.im/debian/pool/main/r/riot-web/ (I am by no means sure that that is the right place to download from). Now I am stuck because I can't find answers to how to gpg --verify the riot-web_1.5.9_amd64.deb file. What am I doing wrong and how can I do it right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freeplane - can't install
Yes, when installing via terminal, it gives this output: ~$ sudo apt install freeplane Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting ip a server part II (at least)
I still haven't figured out the gpg verification. So far I am using a full Trisquel 8.0 installation. I have successfully installed Apache2. I have installed mysql-server but ran into one problem. According to https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-linux-apache-mysql-php-lamp-stack-ubuntu-18-04 I should run sudo mysql_secure_installation from which I should VALIDATE PASSWORD PLUGIN But I don't get that option. I am asked to Enter password for user root The only password I know of is the one I use for my one and only account on the computer. When entering that I get Error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.socl' (2) I have found some cases of users with similar symptoms (i.e. the above error message), but their cases seem to be different (e.g. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/59481975/mysql-secure-installation-problem-access-denied-for-user-rootlocalhost). Any help?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting ip a server part II (at least)
Next step is to verify the file with gpg. But there seems to be no .asc file (see https://trisquel.info/en/issues/25533#comment-146241)
[Trisquel-users] 3D printing with free software
I would like to experiment with and help my daughter to learn 3D printing. I noticed that on ryf.fsf.org there's the lulzbot printers: https://ryf.fsf.org/categories/3d-printers They are quite expensive so I want to look for something cheaper - perhaps second hand. But, while I can find 3D printers that are open source hardwarewise, I haven't found information about ones that are running (exclusively) on free software. Also, maybe needless to say, it should be fairly easy to use for beginners. Any recommendations?
[Trisquel-users] Setting ip a server part II (at least)
I have tried a number of times to set up a server. The last time was when I created this thread: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/setting-server I still have not succeeded, which probably mostly say something about my knowledge, skills and capacity for learning! Anyway, I wish to give it another try. I have a librebooted Lenovo T60 which I will use. First I need to install trisquel mini (32bit). I have downloaded the appropriate files: trisquel-archive-signkey.gpgtrisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso.md5 trisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso trisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso.part trisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso.asc trisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso.sha256 Since md5 seems obsolete I ran a sha256sum: $ sha256sum trisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855 trisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso this differs from the sequence in the accompanying sha256sum file: 1948231d18f720f746d9acf35f39ced9bbf26eeaec8463e9801bf5a74639a7fa trisquel-mini_8.0_i686.iso Am I missing something or what is wrong?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Spotify - or the like - in privacy
Got it, thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Spotify - or the like - in privacy
Privacy-wise, that must be the ultimate solution

Perhaps not for the neighbours, though!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Verifying install files (Zotero)
It's not helpful when the attacker can both add their own malicious version and also alter the posted checksums so that they match. How likely are we to fall victims of such an offence?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Verifying install files (Zotero)
In most cases I only install software from the Trisquel repo but for instance for Trisquel itself, replicant images etc I download the install files and verify them with shasum and gpg. I thought tha such verification is (or can be) crucial to security - but perhaps it is not as useful as I thought?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Verifying install files (Zotero)
Wasn't there also a case with Linux Mint?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Spotify - or the like - in privacy
Thanks. I downloaded and extracted the zip-file. But I find no information about how to install. Can you help? There are some screenshots showing e.g. Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Do you know if will we have access to recent music from famous (!) artists via Nuclear?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Spotify - or the like - in privacy
Yeah, that might do for me but the kids want here-and-now choices - like their friends...
[Trisquel-users] Spotify - or the like - in privacy
In a family with children in all sizes there is a huge demand for something like spotify - with the latest and most popular music. It doesn't seem to be possible to use spotify etc in complete privacy. What could be the *most* private way to use spotify (or a similar service)?
[Trisquel-users] Verifying install files (Zotero)
I wish to install Zotero (a powerful reference manager which is frees software). Unfortunately Zotero is not in Trisquel's repository (I wonder why not?). Hence one has to download the install file from the zotero.org. They don't provide checksums or other means for verification. On the Zotero forum, dstillman, who is an administrator at the zotero site, wrote: Checksums are useful if you're downloading software via HTTP or from an untrusted mirror. If you're downloading from a trusted site via HTTPS, there's not really much benefit — if someone could modify the binaries (or, in the case of a PKI failure, serve you a different binary), there's a good chance they could modify the hashes too. While those would be in separate locations with separate access permissions, you basically have to trust us to protect our own infrastructure either way, since anything we could set up to post hashes to the website at build time we can do ourselves to monitor changes without people needing to verify hashes manually. Needless to say, we keep access to the deployment pipeline extremely locked down and monitor all changes. And the same goes for updates, which Zotero downloads via HTTPS from zotero.org subdomains. (On macOS and Windows the executables are also signed, but Linux doesn't support that, and in any case it doesn't provide much additional security as long as you know you're getting the file from zotero.org.) If dstillman is right, does it mean that checksum'ing files has no meaning? And is he right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] The Free Software Force is calling for support
I think you are naive I usually take such an expression as a compliment but in this case it might not qualify for one since you seem to ignore the facts: Since there seems to be no evidence we can't allow ourselves to conclude that he was forced *BY* FSF and hence not that FSF should be sanctioned. Experience has taught me that a third possible scenario could be - The quitter doesn't reckon his or her given action as a mistake in itself, but reckon that the particular action may be interpreted and treated in ways that might damage the organisation which the quitter was working for, and therefore considers a resignation as a (perhaps the best) means to avoid (further) damage to that organisation. Since there seems to be no *evidence* we can't allow ourselves to *conclude* that he was forced *BY* FSF and hence not that FSF should be sanctioned.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The Free Software Force is calling for support
Since there seems to be no evidence we can't allow ourselves to conclude that he was forced *BY* FSF and hence not that FSF should be sanctioned. On top of the 'scan all the news papers involved" flaw, this is one more reason not to sign the petition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The Free Software Force is calling for support
Thanks. That is interesting reading. About the petition, it reads: Low grade journalists and an internet mob used lies to attack RMS. He was forced to resign from the FSF and his position at the MIT. The in-depth review of the facts, in chronological order, can now be found in an easier to read format here. If you disagree with this injustice, sign this petition to show that: You wont purchase from brands that advertise on the news papers involved, you will no longer donate to the FSF(United States) but to other free software organizations instead and that you will avoid collaborating with MIT researchers. This may be well-intended but it is flawed since it would require possible signatories to read the "news papers involve" in full. That is hardly feasible for (m)any person(s). It is also unclear what the "injustice" comprise exactly. Since the petition includes a call to not donate to FSF, it appears that it was FSF who "forced [RMS] to resign" and hence should be sanctioned. Do we know if RMS was "forced to resign" (his presidency of) FSF *BY* FSF? (The same questions could be raised regarding MIT)
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Open in terminal' does not work
Thanks. I have done the settings like yours except with 'xfce4-terminal' instead of 'mate-terminal'. But 'open in terminal' still doesn't work. When I manually enter 'xfce4-terminal' in a terminal a new terminal window opens. Hence, I believe the command is correct. I wonder what may be the problem...?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
Thanks. Of course I do not understand the technicalities but that has to do with my lack of knowledge. Once again, thanks for the efforts.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
Since I have installed Numix-Zenburn as a theme, the chrome of Abrowser has dark colors as preferred. It is the colors of web pages that are tricky. Using the 'dark background and light text' addon for firefox compensates for the problem, but the color settings of the addon and the theme are not exactly the same. To sum up the problem: Abrowser adopts the colors of the Numix-Zenburn theme for the chrome, but it does not so for web pages. Since Icecat adopts the color settings of the theme for both chrome and web pages it appears to be theoretically possible for Abroswer as well (chaosmonk also reported this to be successful until a given update of Abrowser). In the end, the actual question seems to be: is there a way to make Abrowser obey the theme completely?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Open in terminal' does not work
MATE's control center wasn't installed but it is now. The 'items list' is empty but actions can be added. However, I cannot find suggestions as to how to configure such an action. I checked that I do have the caja-open-terminal package installed and suppose I need a command to activate it. Can you help with e.g. a screenshot of how the open caja action is configured on your computer?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Open in terminal' does not work
I actually do use Caja but under xfce. I prefer Caja over Thunar. Hence, I don't have MATE's control center. In xfce's control center there is a menu point called 'File manager' but it refers to Thunar. But 'Open in terminal' usually works and still does at my other machine, also running xfce and with Caja as the default file manager. Maybe I should point out, that when right clicking in a folder, the menu point of 'Open in terminal' is there. It just does not work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
I am sorry - I get it that my formulations are not clear enough. And of course I don't expect you to just fix this problem whether or not it is a lot of work (I have no idea if it is). Anyway, the problem is that I have installed a new theme called Numix-Zenburn (which chaosmink introduced earlier in this thread). On a system level it works without issues. To make Abrowser adopt the theme, one needs to change the setting under Preferences -> General -> Colors to "Use system colors" and to "Always" 'override the colors specified by the page with your selections above'. The problem is that the last part doesn't work: Abrowser does not adopt the theme which the system uses. According to chaosmonk's suggestions, colors for the different graphical elements of Abrowser can be changed in about:config under 'browser.display.whatever_the_sort_of_element_one_wants_to_set_the_color_for. I have tried this too, but it also lead to no change. The reason I asked you was that I suppose you would know whether this problem can be solved via the terminal or not. In which case you would either say it's not possible, that it is but you don't have the time to do it or that you would suggest a solution. Of course it is also a possible fallout that you do not know. Please don't consider my request as a demand but rather as an enquiry. And with no other expectations than your usual kindness.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
Hi Magic Banana, Here, https://trisquel.info/en/forum/changing-abrowsers-buttons-font-color-solved#comment-120787, you offered a command line to help with some color settings for Abrowser. Can you help make one which will solve the problem, that when adding e.g. Numix-Zenburn theme OR changing colors manually in about:config, I just get a white background? Chaosmonk said he had a similar issue with Abrowser (in this thread) and I haven't been able to solve the issue. According to the monk, these colors are used in the Zenburn theme: "browser.display.background_color" to #3F3F3F "browser.display.foreground_color" to #DCDCCC "browser.anchor_color" to #8CD0D3 "browser.visited_color" to #CC9393
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen

[Trisquel-users] 'Open in terminal' does not work
Right clicking within a folder and click 'Open in terminal' suddenly does not work. Any suggestions on why and how to solve this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
After applying the new settings to Abrowser, when starting Abrowser or opening a new tab, the background is shortly coloured according to the new setting, but then returns to white/default.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
I'll try it out, thanks. I am having some difficulty to add a new set of icons, though. Adding them to /usr/share/icons did not work. One developer/designer at Github instructed to put the folder (with the icon software) in /usr/share/xfce4/weather/icons/folder of new icons, but that too did not help me.
[Trisquel-users] Calendar to use with e.g. Claws

Nope, but it is very free :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Best' display for x200 (librebooted)
I agree with nadebula.1984. Though I rarely need better performance!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
I see. Can you by chance recommend a nice set of icons for xfce which matches zenburn?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
Yeah, all background images get removed. I like it. It makes most pages cleaner I agree and will try this out for some time. What is the difference between changing the settings under Preferencens and "set them to the exact Zenburn colors in about:config."
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
By the way, is it advised only to use only the default theme of the Tor Browser, or will changing that have no effect on the matters of security/privacy?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
Thanks. It now works in Icecat, but one consequence is that for instance the graphical element on the landing page of trisquel.info is not visible. In some case this may not be a problem, in others it might... Anyway, I like the theme, so thanks for sharing.
[Trisquel-users] TBB settings vs Icecat/Abrowser proxy through TOR?
I believe I have read/heard that some sites will be able to identify me/my computer by e.g. the scripts that are not allowed to run in my browser. If that is the case, which is better when blocking sites/domains with noscript: Using Tor browser or Icecat/Abrowser proxied through TOR?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Best' display for x200 (librebooted)
I occasionally do that at home, but I wish to have a better screen also when away (or even in the living room).
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Best' display for x200 (librebooted)
It turns out my screen is a CCFL. Thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen
Chaosmonk, thanks for the tip which I wish to tryout. I have installed the numix-zenburn theme, but how do you modify Abrowser/Icecat color preferences to strip out background images, use Zenburn's background color for all webpages, Zenburn's blue shade for links, and Zenburn's white for all other text"? When modify Abrowser -> preferences -> Genral -> Colors and set Bacground to e.g. a dark gray and text color to a light gray I just get an all white background and black text.
[Trisquel-users] 'Best' display for x200 (librebooted)
I have a librebooted x200 which I am generally happy with. More or less the only thing that I am not happy about is the display. I have tried to find out which would be the 'best' substitute for the one that's in use now (I don't know if it's original, but I suppose so). According to https://libreboot.org/docs/hardware/x200.html any display that's made for x200 probably work. It appears that IPS is better than TN and (perhaps) that IPS is the same as AFFS - if I understand correctly. According to https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2=84941 the HV121WX4-120 (Matte AFFS panel) is a very good choice. But it seems that one will need the inverter (which I don't know what is) to be located at a different place. Yet, I do not understand the technical terms and would appreciate some help. Firstly, I would like help to determine which display would be the best choice. What choices are there and what are the pros and cons for each? Secondly, I may need some one to point me to a guide on how to replace the display. I you have experiences with this, please share.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
The "..." is described above: sudo bash /usr/share/doc/wordpress/examples/setup-mysql -n wordpress localhost Can you help to figure out why I didn't succeed?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
One caution though is to be careful reading through any guide that suggests adding a repository / downloading software, so that you do not inadvertently add anything non-free if your goal (since you are using Trisquel) is to keep a free/libre system And accordingly I install wordpress from trisquel's repo. Most guides include downloading the tar. A few install from repo, for instance this one: https://linoxide.com/ubuntu-how-to/easy-steps-installing-wordpress-on-ubuntu-using-apt-get/ It seems to work fine. After the final command sudo bash /usr/share/doc/wordpress/examples/setup-mysql -n wordpress localhost I should be able to 'start making [my] blog' when going to http://localhost/wordpress But nothing happens! I don't know what the 'sudo bash ...' command is supposed to do. If I am not wrong (which I very might be) localhost will read the .html file in /var/www/html but there is nothing in that folder which links to wordpress. In the /var/www/ folder there is a folder called 'wordpress' (i.e. next to the 'html' folder). Any advise on how to make it work?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
Since the netinstall isos and text mode installation do not work I will just use a Trisquel mini installation. I suppose that will work fine? Now, I have installed apache2, mysql-server and php7.0-mysql which I believe to be the necessary software for the server part. For my first page I want to setup a wordpress blog. Wordpress in in the repository and I have installed it, but the terminal does not recognise 'wordpress' as a command. Q: How do I setup wordpress in/on (which is the right terminology?) Apache?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
OK, so I will use a librebooted T60 for my server. It crruntly has 2GB of memory - I may have to increase that to 3GB (which is max). I will install Trisquel from at netinstall image but when I dd the image to a usb stick it creates two partitions (sdb1 and sdb2). When dd'ing other trisquel images I only get one partition (i.e. sdb1). I have been using this command sudo dd if=trisquel-netinst_8.0_i686.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=8M;sync taken from https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb It doesn't work. And I can't easily delete the partitions created on the usb stick. In fact the only way I have been able to do it is by creating a new partition table with gparted. Q: What am I doing wrong and/or how can I solve that As for the router issue raised by Libreshop above I will solve it by using two routers running libreCMC. That means that I will have a primary router, i.e. the one that is connected directly to 'the outside' and a secondary router which is 'behind'. Q: Should I use the the primary or the secondary for my server traffic and how should I set the servers up, e.g. regarding vlan.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
Thanks for wanting the best for me. Learning from experience can take many forms and while I in many cases prefer my own unspoiled experiences, in this case I would like some guidance. That is, gain a specific goal by the aid of one or more knowledgeables. You might say that under the given conditions the task of learning everything by own and unspoiled experience is too demanding for me to be able to turn it into a positive learning experience. It is not crucial at the time, but I am sure that even with guidance, this will be an experiment for me. So, thanks for the encouragement, but at this point I would appreciate your knowledge about servers more than your good intentions for my learning.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
Yes, I mean a Thinkpad T60. I know it supports 3GB RAM, but does it as a whole suffice for a server?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
If no issues occur I can do this. But if I am not wrong, this will not render it possible to access my server form the outside, right? $ hostname -I appears to give me my local IP. How do I connect the server/page with a domain, e.g. gnubahn.dk? Next step is to design the page. I will probably need some sort of template for my first shot. I would appreciate links to pages explaining how to design or setup an actual page. But again: To start with I need to settle on which computer to install apache on. Btw, is there an easy answer to why Apache is the best choice?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
Thanks for the advise, jxself and chaosmunk. I still need to start at the beginning though: What computer specs are necessary? Will a T60 suffice? What are the main possible bottle necks?
[Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
Hi. I have for long wanted to setup my own server but every time I get stock. There are loads of sites apparently explaining and illustrating how to do including https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/server Yet I haven't found one that helps me - with my level of (lack of) knowledge - sufficiently to understand what is needed, how to install it and how to set it up. I wish to be able to host a few sites (i.e. a number of domains) like simple pages, blogs etc. I would like some sort of upload via email system (i.e. I send an email to a specific address which posts the content on my site) I also wish to setup my own * email server * encrypted file storage (with multiple users so I can host e.g. my cousins back-up files without me being able to know their content) * encrypted etherpad LATER I would like to learn how to setup * a vpn service * a tor node * a video/chat instance and more So I want to start with a server that can host simple pages and blogs and later be 'upgraded' to host various features like the ones mentioned above. First question: Which computer should I use? Naturally I want to run free software exclusively, i.e. on Libreboot and Trisquel. Will it suffice with a T60? Will it be much better with X200 or a T400, or should I use something else? Are there some minimum requirements or recommendations regarding CPU, RAM, bandwidth etc.? Secondly, I need to know which software to install. If it is not too difficult or cumbersome I would like to start by setting up a basic server which I can later 'expand' to the more advanced features (rather than having to install totally different server software later). Thirdly I need to know how to set it all up to ensure the proper functionality and privacy/security. One issue I really don't understand is how to make the server accessible from the internet. I hope you guys will help me with advise, knowledge and links to good reads. Since I do not have much spare time, this project will probably last some time. On top of getting my own server, I hope to be able to make a good guide based on my experiences and the synthesis of your help.
[Trisquel-users] CMOS battery compatibility?
I have a T400 with a dead/broken CMOS battery and a T60 with a working battery. Their FRU numbers are different, but the battery number (i.e. CR-2032/S7K) are the same as is also the connector - except the order of the wires are opposite. That is the black and red wire has changed position (on one the red wire is to the left and the black is to the right. On the other it is the other way around). Since this is DC the order of the wires is important, but I don't know how they are connected to the battery itself (i.e. if the red or the black wire is connected to the + or the -). Does someone know if it is safe to switch the two CMOS batteries or not?
[Trisquel-users] CPU coil whine on T400s
Like many others (perhaps everybody?) my T400s produces this annoying noise which I learned from other users is coil whine from the CPU. It appears that some bios/windows users have successfully solved the problem, but the examples I have found are with other machines than the T400s. The issues has been touched here before, but I still miss a solution: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/whats-deal-corebootlibreboot-x220230-looking-more-powerful-freedom-laptop
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use battery 1 before battery 0?
Thanks. According to the thinkwiki page my computer should/would do exactly what I wish. But that doesn't seem to be the case. I do not understand the bug report well enough go tell if it os the same or a related issue. If I understand the threads correctly, the issue may have to do with settings in the bios. Do you think the issue should be resolved in Libreboot, in the Linux kernel or in the Trisquel OS?
[Trisquel-users] Use battery 1 before battery 0?
I'm on a T400s with an extra battery in the ultra bay, i.e. instead of the dvd drive. The computer seems to be using the main battery (battery 0) first. When it is drained, the second battery (battery 1) takes over. Is there a way to a way to tell the computer to first use battery 1 and then battery 0? In that way I could have an extra fully charged battery in my bag and replace the drained battery from the ultra bay with the fully charged one, while the main battery would have taken over.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel doesn't recognise sd card at all
As far as I can see, there is no difference
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel doesn't recognise sd card at all
The output is quite long. How much of the end of the output would be relevant?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm finally completely free.
Congratulations! I remember how good it felt to get liberated (softwarewise).
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel doesn't recognise sd card at all
Like GrevenGull I have an issue with sd cards. But unlike GrevenGull, Trisquel doesn't semme to recognise any sd card: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/wont-detect-sd-card I suspect that Trisquel does not even recognise the sd card reader. I have tried with three different micro sd card (in adapter). Furthermore I have installed exfat-utils exfat-fuse (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trouble-mounting-sdcard-solved). I have trued to echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/rescan: https://askubuntu.com/questions/95391/how-do-i-mount-an-sd-card And I have tried this: https://goinggnu.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/read-your-sd-card-with-your-ubuntu-laptop/ Nothing works. Any ideas of how to get Trisquel to recognise the sd card reader?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
I have now successfully installed Tor by your instructions. After you spending so much time on it, I am almost embarrassed to say that I did know how to install Tor the 'normal' way. But I didn't know your trick to add it to the menu. I ad to manually make the /bin/ though. Still, I will much appreciate a solution to the torbrowser-launcher since I wish to use it myself and it is a lot more convenient and convincing for others (even less knowledgeable than me). Once again, thanks a lot for your efforts.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
This is an easy solution. I believe that the main difference to the solution provided by chaosmonk is that the tar is extracted in a folder on the desktop and no link and icon is created in the menu? Or is there more to it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
Chaosmonk, I am sorry to take too much of your time, and I really appreciate your efforts. Thanks a lot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
Thanks. Now I got a little further, but ran into a new problem: ~/Downloads/torbrowser-launcher$ sudo apt install build-essential dh-python python3-all python3-stdeb python3-pyqt5 python3-gpg python3-requests python3-socks gnupg2 tor Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package python3-gpg jcb@t4s:~/Downloads/torbrowser-launcher$ ./build_deb.sh
Re: [Trisquel-users] Won't detect SD card
I have the same issue on my librebooted t400s.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
Thanks. I have never tried to build from source before so let this be my first try. I already had a beginners problem: According to the guide the first steps are git clone https://github.com/micahflee/torbrowser-launcher.git cd torbrowser-launcher but there is no torbrowser-launcher folder to cd to. And from where should I cd to it? I don't know but is the right question: Where does git clone the source to?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
This drives me crazy. As you can see from the screenshot attached above, Micah's PPA is added, registered and recognised by trisquel. It is also shown by ~$ ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d micahflee-ubuntu-ppa-xenial.list But tha PPA seems to be not recognised when I try to install from it: ~$ sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done torbrowser-launcher is already the newest version (0.2.4-1). 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. This is consistent with a search command output: ~$ apt search torbrowser-launcher Sorting... Done Full Text Search... Done torbrowser-launcher/flidas,now 0.2.4-1 amd64 [installed] helps download and run the Tor Browser Bundle And with a policy command output: ~$ apt policy torbrowser-launcher torbrowser-launcher: Installed: 0.2.4-1 Candidate: 0.2.4-1 Version table: *** 0.2.4-1 500 500 http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status According to the Github page, the latest version, which I expected to have installed, is v0.3.1: https://github.com/micahflee/torbrowser-launcher/releases How come Trisquel does not recognise the version from Michah's PPA?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
And the policy: ~$ apt policy torbrowser-launcher torbrowser-launcher: Installed: 0.2.4-1 Candidate: 0.2.4-1 Version table: *** 0.2.4-1 500 500 http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
~$ ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d micahflee-ubuntu-ppa-xenial.list It seems to be regignised, but after a an 'apt update' I still get ~$ apt search torbrowser-launcher Sorting... Done Full Text Search... Done torbrowser-launcher/flidas,now 0.2.4-1 amd64 [installed] helps download and run the Tor Browser Bundle
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
~$ apt policy torbrowser-launcher torbrowser-launcher: Installed: 0.2.4-1 Candidate: 0.2.4-1 Version table: *** 0.2.4-1 500 500 http://es.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel flidas/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
Thanks. I got this output: ~$ apt search torbrowser-launcher Sorting... Done Full Text Search... Done torbrowser-launcher/flidas,now 0.2.4-1 amd64 [installed] helps download and run the Tor Browser Bundle I suppose it means that the version from the PPA is not accessible somehow? As can be seen in the attached pic, the PPA is registered and active.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
It seems that the version from the PPA is not even accessible: ~$ apt search torbrowser-launcher Sorting... Done Full Text Search... Done torbrowser-launcher/flidas,now 0.2.4-1 amd64 [installed] helps download and run the Tor Browser Bundle
[Trisquel-users] Install from PPA rather than repo
I have used the tor browser launcher (tbl) for some time and it generally works well. On my latest fresh Trisquel install (Librebooted Macbook 2,1) I cannot gen tbl to work. It downloads without issues, but when the browser is to be opened I get a signature verification problem. I install it from Micah's PPA but I just realised that tbl is also in Trisquel's repository. Since Micah's PPA has the newest version I prefer that but now comes the questions which are both specific to the given case and generic for similar cases: Can the given issue be caused by the same application being present in both the repo and a PPA? How can I make sure, that Trisquel installs from the PPA and not the repo? -- See: https://github.com/micahflee/torbrowser-launcher
[Trisquel-users] Macbook 2,1 heat problem: PowerTOP
Happy GNU year. According to https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/macbook PowerTOP may be used to help solve the fan problem of a librebooted and trisquelised MacBook 2,1. But how can it help? According to the wiki, PowerTOP may help to solve the problem or "indicate that the fan is old and should be replaced". How would PowerTOP tell me? (I have tried running PowerTOP, but my ignorant eyes don't see anything useful).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Display issue (probably font rendering) on Abroswer
I have the same problem but only on my MacBook 2,1. I don't see this problem om my T500, X200 or T400s. I don't know if it is relevant, but all my machines are librebooted. Which computer are you on, Pandya?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Whats the deal with coreboot/libreboot on the x220/230? (looking for a more powerful freedom laptop)
Someone mentioned libreboot might fix coil whine, but I have my doubts. It doesn't Only I didn't know what the noise was, so thanks for enlightening me on that. Absolutely nothing one can do about it? Flashing the T400s should be harder than the other machines but the guys from Technoethical developed a short cut. I once had a link to a video showing it, but can't find it any more.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I nede your help and Support
This is a good initiative and I will look into it, once I have more time. For now, I just wonder: The polygon part of the name is claimed to be chosen because the polygon shape is chosen because it is one of the magical shapes in geometry Are you aware that 'polygon' goes for geometric shapes of any number of sides? Considering the text and the logo, I wonder that perhaps you think of 'octagon', the eight sided polygon (which in your case is regular). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygon https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/octagon.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] (A)broswer and privacy: Don't allow to to maximise window fully
Thanks for letting me in on these technical aspects. Tor browser opens in a quite small window, which may (?) be good to cover users with low resolution screens. It would be nice to have a fixed browser resolution which is a bit larger. Hopefully someone with technical skills to do so sees this. Would it be possible to make and add-on for that?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mismatch: Trisquel and (you're the) Prey, Pal
one annoying issue In my experience, freedom doesn't come without annoying issues
[Trisquel-users] Mismatch: Trisquel and (you're the) Prey, Pal
I know there are 'good' reasons for the Trisquel project to use PayPal, but it just seems so inappropriate, considering the idealism behind the project (cough cough freedom cough cough). I just wrote an email to Ruben, addressing my concern on this matter and suggesting to use Liberapay. If you have experiences with Liberapay, please tell. If you agree, please let everyone and the Trisquel team know. If you have the knowledge or technical skills to help realise it, please let the Trisquel team know.
[Trisquel-users] (A)broswer and privacy: Don't allow to to maximise window fully
When using the tor browser, on is warned that maximising the window 'can allow websites to determine your monitor size, which can be used to track you' and one is further advised to leave the 'browser windows in their original default size'. I suppose that when most people use the same windows size, it is harder for a website to identify your machine. Since the tor browser does not give you a warning if you enlarge the window from its default size, I suppose that not maximising is perhaps not as good as keeping the default size, but not as bad as revealing your displays maximum size. Is that right? Does the browser reveal if the window size resembles the maximum size of the display? Would it be possible to make e.g. Abrowser not able to maximise fully but only into e.g maximum screen size minus 3%? And would that help guard the users privacy?

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8: Lightning for Icedove
I have installed T8 on two computers. On one I ran 'do-release-upgrade', on the other I did a fresh install (because 'do-release-upgrade' didn't work). On the fresh installation, lightning/calendar works with Icedove. On the one upgraded from T7 I can't get Lightning to work. When searching via add-ons in Icedove, I don't get an 'add' option, but rather a link to download the package. Since I would like my package manager to automatically update the add-on, I tried to install it via apt: $ sudo apt install lightning Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lightning : Depends: thunderbird (>= 1:45.8.0-3~deb7u1+8.0trisquel1) E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. With no luck. What am I doing wrong, and why does Lightning work on the freshly installed T8 and not the upgrade one?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel for education
That sound like an interesting project. Just out of curiosity, where in the world do you work?
Re: [Trisquel-users] do-release-upgrade doesn't work
Reading and thinking again, I suppose it is related to the ' Unofficial software packages not provided by Trisquel' part. Does this mean that I have to uninstall any software installed via other PPA's (e.g. micahflee's PPA) or downloaded from other sites (e.g. https://sogo.nu/download.html#/frontends)?

As you see, there is no option to choose e.g. hiragana
Re: [Trisquel-users] Japanese (anthy) under XFCE
Yeah, that is what I would do - and expect to be possible. Apparently there is no application for configuring iBus settings. All I can find is this iBus preferences (attached):
[Trisquel-users] Japanese (anthy) under XFCE
I earlier stated, that 'Installing Japanese (Anthy) under xfce is easy' (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/anthy-icon-panel-xfce), but I have changed my mind. For some reason I struggle to get it to work. I have support for Japanese installed and I have en icon for Anthy preferences giving me options to choose Danish or Japanese. But when choosing Japanese nothing changes. I can even still write the Danish special characters æ, ø, and å. Please help me out of my frustrations!!! Onegaishimasu.
[Trisquel-users] Enigmail under XFCE (automatic encryption and decryption)
For long I have been very frustrated, that Enigmail wouldn'y remember my passphrase, prompting me for it every time I send or receive encrypted emails. I have searched and asked, but have not - until a few minutes ago - found the reason or a solution (this is probably due to my lack of knowledge). I had no idea that this was related to the fact that I am running XFCE, which happens to be the case. By chance I discovered that under Settings -> Sessions and Startup -> advanced you can tick a box saying: launch GNOME service at startup. This triggers the Gnome keyring daemon to run upon boot. I added my discovery to the manual: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/enigmail-does-not-ask-automatically-decrypt
