Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there an amd gpu (deblobbed) which I can use?
Dude, when you are hiding from the mass surveillance, the quality of display should be the least of your concerns! That said, the external HDMI port of G505S is working even when a coreboot is flashed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there an amd gpu (deblobbed) which I can use?
> So that is the simplest guide you say? Okay thanks for telling me! Yes - maybe not the shortest, but very detailed one - and that should make it harder to do something wrong ;-) > I saw, odd isn't it. :) My understanding is that Intel used some insecure "speedhacks" to gain an unfair advantage over AMD, but now these "speedhacks" are backfiring ;) that's why a lot of those recently-discovered vulnerabilities are Intel-specific
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hello all
Try following the guides like this one - https://superuser.com/questions/1205089/how-to-determine-version-intel-management-engine-on-linux - to try to check the Intel ME version. If you could detect the Intel ME version, that means Intel ME is present on your platform.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there an amd gpu (deblobbed) which I can use?
There is no difference between Taiwan and China, same Asia. I don't believe that Taiwan has flying unicorns that are making perfect computers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there an amd gpu (deblobbed) which I can use?
Vega is not an option because it contains AMD PSP backdoor. Maybe RX580 because it does not contain it
Re: [Trisquel-users] Debian census
Forget about Debian. What's about Devuan? It's like Debian, but without one fatal flaw - SystemD
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free as in "I found it in a dumpster"
Yes, the proprietary BIOS of your x61s might contain a whitelist that could prevent laptop booting when the "unknown" wireless card is installed. You would need to either hack your whitelist to remove it completely, or to replace some whitelisted card IDs with yours, or just replace the proprietary BIOS of your laptop with coreboot or libreboot if that is possible.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
Nope, it is quite useful - this thread is raising the awareness. Trisquel is in a deep trouble, and to get out of this situation 1st of all we should admit this trouble and don't bury head in the sand
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
Even if you'll give a small donation of a million dollars to Trisquel, it will still be deep behind the Ubuntu. I'm seeing so many +100 euro donations but its' just a waste of money and despite all these donation there is still no Trisquel 8. Donation is an investment, and in this case its' a very poor one
Re: [Trisquel-users] Writing my ‘common distros’ for us in 2018
Please add QubesOS , Void Linux and Artix Linux. QubesOS = secure OS where the processes could be isolated at the independent virtual machines , but it has systemd. Void Linux = runit instead of systemd, and overall an excellent distro. Artix Linux = Arch Linux with OpenRC as default instead of systemd
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a perfect method to guard our communication?
There could also be the hidden vulnerabilities built-in to the encryption mathematical algorithms, I'm especially suspicious about the crypto highly approved by the N S A as the public standards everyone should follow
Re: [Trisquel-users] Upgrading to Trisquel 8
You are using the alpha version, which is called alpha for a reason: contains more bugs than the average release version, so cant be called as "release". Maybe you haven't encountered the bugs, but that could be because of your specific software/hardware configuration, or maybe just a light usage of that PC
Re: [Trisquel-users] Minifree's Libreboot X200 laptop comes with Trisquel pre-installed. Now with other keyboard layouts available, and free stickers
Leah, thats nice to hear! Hope that one day you will be able to launch some of the more modern laptops like Lenovo G505S - quad core AMD laptop without Intel ME / AMD PSP , so has a good potential to be liberated. Open source firmware replacement for its EC controller is being done by Paul, though I haven't heard if there has been any progress, currently it could only blink some LEDs...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Upgrading to Trisquel 8
T8 would come out at 2020 and expire at 2021, its all planned! :) Thank you, CalmStorm :D and coming Merry Trumpmas by the way ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Upgrading to Trisquel 8
I am sorry to burst your bubble friends, but TRISQUEL 8 DOES NOT EXIST. PERIOD It is only Trisquel 8 pre-alpha that exists. Real Trisquel 8 will not come out until 2020 https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-8-release-countdown-clock
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'd like to start volunteering my time to help Trisquel. What can I do to help?
If you doubt my words, please ask Ruben - he will confirm the 2020 release date
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'd like to start volunteering my time to help Trisquel. What can I do to help?
Well, there is a way - to simply wait until the release date. Here is a countdown clock https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-8-release-countdown-clock
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 release countdown clock
It is semi-official, but - if you look at the current pace of Trisquel 8 development - you could easily see that we cannot release it before 2020
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 release countdown clock
Why do you think that I am mocking the people? If you look at the pace of Trisquel 8 development, you could easily estimate that we can't release it before 2020. Let's be realistic please, okay?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 release countdown clock
Why? If such a long time is needed for this release, it might be the best Linux distro in the history of mankind. Cheer up! ;)
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 release countdown clock
Since a lot of people have been asking about Trisquel 8 recently, I made a countdown timer until the official release of Trisquel 8: https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20200101T00=136=cursive Please let me know if you like it
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where is and when trisquel 8 will be released?
Trisquel 8 is going to be released - probably at 2020 year if not later. Keep waiting bros! ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] I finally managed to install Trisquel 8. But it was quite hard to install and run. Any solutions?
I'm sorry but you didn't install Trisquel 8, you have installed Trisquel 8 Alpha. That is why you are having all these problems! Wait for the official release of Trisquel 8, which is going to happen probably at 2020 year
Re: [Trisquel-users] Uh oh - ArchiveOS listed Trisquel
That's sad, though not surprising at all... :P Where is Trisquel 8? (without systemd hopefully)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Big problem with Router R841N
Hi Lightmoon, please tell how you verified that a router doesn't work? For additional security, wireless networking is disabled by default for LibreCMC installations. You have to connect to this router by Ethernet with Telnet or SSH, and either through LuCi web interface or by using vi, edit /etc/config/wireless file to set up your WiFi network name/password/etc., save and reboot to apply the settings
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wikileaks how CIA is spying. every Operative System
"Trump was elected by russia some people say" - What other conspiracy theories do you know? :) Trump was elected by United States citizens, not by Russian citizens. If you seriously think that "Trump was elected by russia", I say that green lizard men from Nibiru voted for Hillary XD "He lies 65% of the time according to some stats." - and where have you got this exact nice "65%" number? At some biased liberal "fact-checking" site? :D "Hilary on the other hand was only somewhat dishonest." - many people are somewhat dishonest, but no people are being seriously investigated by FBI for "somewhat dishonesty" ;) Also why this "somewhat dishonest" Hillary wiped her 33K of e-mails and smashed her cellphone with a hammer? Soros loves the liberal fools!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wikileaks how CIA is spying. every Operative System
Government is just a huge business with a huge number of customers! Customers vote with their vallets, citizens vote with their ballots. Countries are having the negotiations and making deals, businesses are doing the same. Business should care about their customers or eventually they will lose them, government should care about their people or eventually it will be replaced. President like a CEO, and his Cabinet is like the upper management of this huge business
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wikileaks how CIA is spying. every Operative System
Sorry but Associated Press is a Fake News, heavily influenced by its liberal ideology and contributors. Better not to watch TV at all, it is a zombie box - waste of time
Re: [Trisquel-users] I think I caught Widigo
WTF Trisquel is backdoored now?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot: weird USB problems
This seems more like a problem with operating system or its behavior on your hardware. Or maybe even a hardware problem (either a buggy southbridge or dying USB drives). Does not seem to be a Libreboot problem - because, after booting through the initial stage, Libreboot gives a complete control over the initialized hardware to the operating system. Try using the latest Ubuntu LiveCD and another flash drive, to see if you still have this problem

Re: [Trisquel-users] I installed librecmc on a new router, but the oddest thing happens
librecmc is based on openwrt, so the instructions for SSH/Telnet will be the same as here: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/firstlogin Then you go and edit various config files like /etc/config/network , /etc/config/wireless and so on. Very simple
Re: [Trisquel-users] I installed librecmc on a new router, but the oddest thing happens
Probably you have installed librecmc build which does not contain luci web interface. If that is so, you can still connect via telnet/ssh and set up the wifi router by editing the config files in console through vi editor
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel ISOs? When???

Nobody ran this script for 2 years, and nobody noticed that it silently disappeared from a server. The ancient secret of rebuilding Trisquel is lost, and we will have to wait for eternity until someone rediscovers it :P > Security updates are still coming. Trisquel 7 is based on Ubuntu 14.04, which will receive updates until April 2019 Means we need to wait 3 more years for Trisquel 7 SP1 > To waste a minimal bandwidth, choose the NetInstall: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/using-netinstall-image-bootable-usb-drive If I need to install Trisquel to several computers, that means I will have download the same stuff several times with NetInstall. He has certainly deserved one though It probably takes a minimal effort to rebuild a DVD (can't know for sure because a script is not publicly available) but apparently he doesn't truly care about Trisquel to lift a finger
[Trisquel-users] New Trisquel ISOs? When???
If we go to download page: > Trisquel 7.0 LTS Belenos >Release date: 11/03/2014 - 18:09 Still 2014 ??? This ISO contains a lot of outdated software with known security vulnerabilities. It requires a ton of updates after a clean install to each machine - what a waste of bandwidth and time! Trisquel is slowly becoming like Windows 7 SP1 where you need to get a ton of updates after install @quidam: if you can't release 8.0 yet, why you are not releasing the new 7.1 - 7.2 - 7.3 ISOs like every half year at least? I just see a constant stream of money coming from generous people to Trisquel project, but with no significant outcome. Hopefully someone (maybe me?) will put this undeserved stream of donations to end by forking a Trisquel and releasing the new ISOs regularly

> The computers are evil* because many people using non-free software I hope you already installed a coreboot/libreboot open/free software BIOS to your computer? You know, the default UEFI has plenty of security vulnerabilities, which could undermine your "VERY secret project" :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo? Change to YaCy.
If you trust only the certain websites, wouldn't it be easier to use a whitte list rather than black? You would be expanding your allowed sites list gradually. Less convenient, but much more secure because you can't just block everything bad - it is impossible! so block by default, and add "allow" as exception
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo? Change to YaCy.
Security through obscurity sucks, hopefully your "VERY secure system" will be fully transparent in the end
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo? Change to YaCy.
The number is 512 ! :) If yours is different, it is possible to solve this riddle in almost infinite number of ways, receiving the different results ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
Just to clarify, it was Lisa Marie Maginnis - the employee who was fired from FSF. Leah is her friend, but we don't know if Leah if a transgender too
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
By being easily offended, Lisa Marie Maginnis has done a great harm to FSF. Libreboot will always be a GNU project, because it cannot exist without GNU software! You can't even approach this project without using GNU tools: GCC, flashrom, etc. etc. etc. We should save Libreboot from the madness of its' leads, and forking seems to be the only way!
Re: [Trisquel-users] I am buying Lemote Yeeloong 8101B laptop
From time to time I see this laptop selling at AliExpress for $100 (shipping is included to this price). But its' hardware is so old... Better wait for the new version of this laptop, with new architecture
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
Shortened quote from FSF website: "The BeagleBoard (various versions) uses the TI OMAP family of SoCs... The graphics accelerator (GPU) and the video decoding hardware for formats such as MPEG-2 are nonfunctional, because they require nonfree blobs to be installed into them. The workaround for these flaws is to do these jobs on the CPU with free software." So, maybe a BeagleBoard Black could potentially get a FSF approval, e.g. if these jobs will be transferred to CPU by default, but this could greatly decrease a performance of this already-not-so-fast board
Re: [Trisquel-users] Vulnerability in the linux kernel... when 7.0.1?
In any case, I think it is a perfect time to release a new version of Trisquel ISO, because it has not been updated for 1.5 years already... With such rare update frequency, head Trisquel developers might simply forget how to build a Trisquel ISO when such need arises in future
Re: [Trisquel-users] raspberry pi 2 and fsf approval?
IMHO, Raspberry Pi's are overrated - not only in terms of free software, but also about their hardware specifications. Last time I did a market research, there were a lot of interesting board with a better price/performance ratio, but without much popularity. Raspberry Pi 2 doesn't seem to be cool or futureproof either... In about a month or so, ARM 64-bit devboards are going to be released: e.g. Nobel64. Look it up
Re: [Trisquel-users] tp link free router, what is gained by that?
Average price of this specific Wi-Fi router model (TL-WR841ND) is ~$25.75 at our domestic market: exactly two times cheaper than a price of ThinkPenguin, $52. I just don't get this multiply by 2 pricing policy... Devices with free software should be competitive, otherwise the humanity would be forever stuck in non-free world! :-( Also, that is 2.4GHz 150Mbps router, while some people like me would want a modern 2.4Ghz/5Ghz 300Mbps-450Mbps, so that there is no sacrifice in specifications
Re: [Trisquel-users] tp link free router, what is gained by that?
The point here is: it is bad to distribute exactly the same hardware for the double of its real price.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
Since our user/developer base is not large, it would be better to spend extra time on improving Trisquel 7 , rather than supporting Trisquel 6. Even if Canonical would decide to support 12.04 till 2022, we do not have to follow their example, because our resources are much smaller than Canonical's
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lemote loongson cpus' performance and software?
Tekmote.nl prices are about 5 times more expensive than from China with shipping. Here are some examples of real prices for 8089B model: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Lemote-Yeeloong-8089B-8-9-opensource-laptop-Loongson-CPU-inside-mini-notebook-computer-linux-pc-for/2036803548.html http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Lemote-Yeeloong-8089B-8-9-opensource-laptop-Loongson-CPU-inside-mini-notebook-computer-linux-pc-for/2036919869.html Just $40-$60 , with free shipping for most countries. Half year ago I saw it on AliExpress too, it costed $100. These prices are nice and fair, because several years old netbook just should not cost 240 euro. I hate speculator / profiteer attitude of Tekmote.nl
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where are all the security updates?
Very interesting thread! I agree with you that there are problems with Trisquel security. However, I think there are no reasons to beat a half-dead horse : Trisquel 6 would be outdated very soon. It is much better decision to focus on Trisquel 7 and make sure that all the security bugs will be fixed in time - like this scary Heartbleed-scale bug of bash http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/24/6840697/worse-than-heartbleed-todays-bash-bug-could-be-breaking-security-for
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on ARM (2)

[Trisquel-users] 2014 news about MIPS Loongson hardware
1) http://www.loongson.cn/news_info.php?id=259 Recently, ICT has launched the Loongson-3B six-core desktop solution. Loongson-3B is a six-core high-performance general-purpose MIPS processor using 32nm manufacturing process, which is working at frequency of 1.2 GHz. http://www.loongson.cn/uploadfile/201404/20140411035647203.jpg Technical specifications: * standard Mini-ITX motherboard with Loongson-3B CPU * ATI RS780E [AMD 780E] southbridge with 128MB integrated graphics * ATI SBx00 Azalia on-board audio * up to 16 GB DDR3 memory * Intel 82574L gigabit network interface * PCI, PCIe, SATA, USB and other peripheral interfaces * thanks to good scalability, could be additionally equipped with discrete graphics AMD HD6770 and SSD drive Leaked benchmark test results: http://openbenchmarking.org/result/1404098-SO-3B1W2703307 This desktop solution is using an optimized version of Fedora 13, with a lot of software available, such as WPS office suite. Manufacturer states that the user experience has been significantly improved, if to compare with Loongson-3A predecessor, and is aimed on government/military users, and for everyone else who cares a lot about privacy. This looks like an excellent candidate to become an open hardware. But, whats about GPU blobs? The development of Loongson is conducted by ICT - Institute of Computing Technology , which is backed by Chinese government. And, in the middle of 2012, NVIDIA lost a huge GPU order from them, due to _closed-source blob_ : http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTEyNTE It gives us hope that Chinese government and AMD have reached an agreement, the result of which is 100% open-source graphics solution From leaked benchmark test results, I could see that: * display driver is open-source radeon 6.14.99 * OpenGL runs with the help of open-source Mesa 9.2.5 and Gallium 0.4 2) http://www.loongson.cn/news_info.php?id=260 http://www.loongson.cn/uploadfile/201404/20140411034220232.jpg This OpenLoong board, based on Loongson-1C cpu, could be used for the same purposes as Raspberry Pi and Arduino, while providing higher performance than them. Could be used as board for MiniPC / DIY netbook, as well as for small home file/printer server. Future versions would have more powerful CPU from Loongson-3 family
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
Free hardware should also be competitive! Well, it could cost about 10%-15% higher, but not in three times ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
This adapter is a rebranded version of some chinese adapter, with free software enabled. Such adapters could be bought from AliExpress/any other chinese online store, for like $5. I am excited to hear about second fully free wireless adapter, but would be searching for exact model in chinese stores - and then would just install Tehnoetic firmware
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
Also, why the best free WiFi adapter is just 150Mbps Draft-N ? The fact that all the free hardware (wi-fi adapters, coreboot-supported motherboards, etc) are a few years old, makes me really sad :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
The chip fully supports 802.11n This is Draft-N specification, not Final-N. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11n-2009#Wi-Fi_Alliance In short, manufacturers have rushed to release WiFi 802.11n devices before the specification was finalized - and, as result, compatibility between Draft-N and Final-N wireless devices is not ideal. There are lots of Final-N WiFi USB adapters, which could also achieve 300Mbps - 450 Mbps I am not interested in 802.11ac devices, because there is the same story (all current 802.11ac devices are Draft-AC, final specification is not ready)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
The problem with Unex DNUA-93F adapter is that it is available only from Unex - and, currently, the minimum order quantity is 2000 pcs. Therefore, I am going to search for chinese wifi adapter that is compatible with free firmware yet has a lower price. *** not an advertisement *** www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?SearchText=300mbps+usb+wifi+adapter lots of 300Mbps USB adapters under $7 dollars with free shipping I admire what you did, Tiberiu, but sadly I cannot afford paying €25
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
That means, I could buy AR9271 or AR7010 device, and just install free firmware onto it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
I apologize, seems I confused the chip model number...
[Trisquel-users] exFat support in Trisquel - why its not working out-of-the-box?
After Trisquel installation, user needs to: 1) add exFat repository: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:relan/exfat 2) install exFat packages: sudo apt-get install exfat-utils fuse-exfat From what I read here, it looks like this is a free software: https://launchpad.net/~relan/+archive/exfat I believe that exFat (as a basic feature) should work in Trisquel instantly after installation - that will improve user experience
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tehnoetic wireless USB adapter awarded with FSF's RYF certificate
Thank you for detailed answer, Legimet :)
