Or rather, Ebay owns PayPal. If I'm not mistaken, PayPal was started  
specifically as something for Ebay to use.

We must accept only FREE as in freedom currency.
The PayPal system admin can create money in PayPal or transfer it (money).

I just tried to donate via bank transfer but the IBAN/account number seems to  
be not valid for EU payment. Is this a known issue?

I don't think that's it. Whole Bitcoins are not typically used, fractions of  
Bitcoin are. The real problems are simply that very few people bother with  
it, and that the value of Bitcoin is highly unstable.

We use Paypal because it's pragmatic. Very few people have Bitcoin wallets,  
but very many people have Paypal accounts or credit cards.
