It's true the problem was caused by the add-on FireTray specially in the systems based on Ubuntu. Now FireTray has been upgraded to version 6 and it is fixed this problem. https://foudfou.github.io/FireTray/#release-notes

SuperTramp83's reply (and the links therein) rose a suspicion in me that maybe this was caused by some add-on, and a possible conflict it may have with the window manager of my desktop environment, although, as I said, the same versions of the same add-ons are installed on another machine

I thought this was strictly an Orca problem, and was contemplating a full-time switch to mutt or alpine for mail. The problem became apparent the first time I used enygmail to sign a message. The problem seems to have vanished as mysteriously as it began appearing. Still have enygmail,

In Trisquel 7.0 (fresh install) Icedove frequently (several times in a span of a few hours) hangs, by which I mean its window goes completely gray and doesn't come back from that state. I have to kill it and run it again, till the same thing happens maybe an hour later. Checking its process,
