(FYI: new user - this is my first post on here)
Hi, I'm trying to install Trisquel 7 on a second-hand macbook 2,1 that I've
acquired (I've already flashed it with libreboot). The OS looks really nice
and seems to run great, except that after I've opened 4 or 5 applications, it
tends to
Update: I set up a 1GB swap file in /mnt and it seems a lot happier now.
Still, it seems a bit strange that the installer didn't set up any swap
space.
Ok, I updated the Macbook wiki page with what I found out about the trackpad,
thermal issues and swap space. I also mentioned about the Trisquel ISO images
possibly having problems booting with Apple firmware. Please take a look and
let me know if you have any comments or edits :)
Thanks, I'll take a look at that. Would be great to get a Trisquel skin and
sticker for it :)
Interesting - I haven't encountered any issues with the keyboard. On mine, @
is simply 'shift+2' and the 'US-macintosh' keyboard configuration seems to
have everything right (as far as I can tell).
In terms of heat: I bought it off of Ebay and, when I received it, the fan
wasn't working - the laptop kept cutting out when the cpu got too hot. So, I
installed a new fan and now it seems to be running fine. My wife has a
Macbook Pro running OS X and it doesn't seem significantly hotter or
Hi, I'm just wondering if it is possible on Trisquel to switch the desktop
environment (temporarily) from Gnome to LXDE? A particular Java application
that I use has a known issue with Gnome, so I'd like to be able to switch to
LXDE temporarily to use it. I installed LXDE from the Add/Remove
Hi pizzaiolo, actually I saw that and it was useful in getting
Libreboot/Trisquel up and running. I'll see if I can add anything that might
help other people who are also trying to liberate Macbooks :)
Ok, I found it. Once LXDE is installed, there is a menu to choose the desktop
environment if you click the triskellion button on the login screen :)
Hi! I just liberated my Macbook (2,1) a couple of days ago and that looks
perfectly fine to me. I find that when I've got a few applications running
the core temps get up to around 70C, but the fan speed increases and brings
it down again quickly. It's not too loud, even when the fan is on
I don't know, but I'd like to know how to easily get into the system settings
window as well :)
> A part of systemd, which is very small, has to be included so a program can
determine whether or not systemd is actually available.
So, you have to have systemd, before you can determine whether or not you
have systemd? That sounds somewhat circular to me .. (good trick they pulled
Cool! :-D
I agree that packages shouldn't have unnecessary dependencies - that doesn't
seem to be in the spirit of free software. But, why would package developers
include a dependency on systemd, if it's not required? Just because they're
fanboys of it?
Seems to me that this software that's
I just saw the news article about this by the FSF and I agree this is very
exciting! I would love to buy the single-cpu board for my home desktop, but
it's probably doubtful that my wife would let me spend $2300 on it. :P
I sincerely wish these guys every success with it though, as this is
My biggest problem with systemd is that they skipped systems A, B and C ..
>:(
Yes, I understand that, but you don't seem to be addressing my point. I'm not
talking about package/distro maintainers, I'm talking about the process of
compiling software in general. E.g. if I was to download a source package and
compile/install it myself on my machine.
Is not the whole
Well, I didn't say 'Debian package' or 'binary package'. If I download the
git repository of source code for an application and compile/install it
myself, couldn't that also be considered a 'package' of software? If not,
then perhaps I used the term 'package' in an unusual way, which may
> No, when you're referring to what Debian package require in order to be
installed, you're talking about packages. Compiling is not even involved in
that process.
When did I mention Debian packages? I have only ever been talking here about
compilation of software from source. I repeat, I
So, to come back to my original (possibly misunderstood) question, which I
will try to clarify:
When compiling a piece of software from source, can the configure script tell
whether or not I have systemd installed on my machine, without me having to
install a separate widget to tell me
I've read back through the comments here, and it seems like we have actually
been talking about two completely different things. That might be where the
confusion is arising ;)
I'm running Trisquel 7 on my laptop (a librebooted Macbook 2,1).
I know this isn't a Trisquel question, but I'm currently going through the
Linux From Scratch guide to build my own system, as it seems like fun and I'm
interested to learn more about what goes on 'under the hood' of GNU/Linux.
Obviously, I want to make it without non-free software, so I'm
Hi nickylodeon, thanks for your input. I had to disable it because otherwise
I couldn't access this site, as the browser kept on freezing. However, I will
try adding trisquel.info to the whitelist and some of the other suggestions
on here and see if that helps.
I'll give that a try and see. Thanks! :-)
Is anybody helping Ruben with Trisquel 8, or is he basically doing it
himself?
I agree - someone responsible should be reviewing/approving merge requests to
ensure a level of quality. If there was a big pile of merge requests sitting
there, not being reviewed, that would be a problem. However, that doesn't
seem to be the case.
> MidnightBSD follow very near this style but he created two levels; First
level, is about your firsts contributions; main developers follow you and if
you are very active or if you make some contributions without any problem
they name you a main developer and you can edit directly.
Ok, so
I find it quite astounding that just one person is supporting this whole
distro. Although, at the same time, it's also a bit worrying that the project
is so dependent on that same person. And, as well as Trisquel, one of the
posters above mentioned that he is also responsible for Icecat and
Ok, thanks for the link. I'll check it out :-)
So, for those that don't like/want systemd, what are the viable alternatives?
Seems like Upstart isn't being maintained any more, right?
Well, my previous post was a bit 'tongue-in-cheek' ;-)
I have to admit that I'm not exactly the world's most experienced programmer,
but according to this Wikipedia article, 'many programming languages support
conditional compilation', which I assume would allow them to conditionally
My understanding is that Trisquel 8 is going to use systemd, given that its
upstream source (Ubuntu) has moved to it.
Is there any estimate on how far away we are from a fully-released Trisquel 8
(e.g. a rough % complete, or expected release date)?
It was Calmstorm that suggested above that there were unnecessary
dependencies:
> seriously, why should every package even ones that don't require it be
dependent on systemd...
I then said, *if* that is the case, then it is bad and shouldn't be
happening. I have no idea what specific
So, what GNU/Linux distro operates on a 'wiki-style', where people can submit
code changes to the production repository, without some level of
reviewing/quality control? Sounds like a recipe for disaster, if you ask me.
Just imagine if the Linux kernel project was being run like that ...
As far as I can see, LFS seems to have pretty good instructions for compiling
the kernel, editing fstab and making the system bootable, after the source
packages have been compiled/installed. Is there something it is missing?
I respect your opinion, FindEssential, and I agree that in the end it comes
down to who you choose to believe/trust. Although, I find it interesting that
you choose to trust these companies who are producing non-free
software/firmware over individuals who are working hard (and often not
+1 for Searx. Great tool! (but I like DDG as well :-) )
Ok, this is good to know! Hopefully, this new version will make it into
Icecat before too long :-)
I've been wondering about screen settings as well. I'm using LXDE with
Trisquel 7 on a Macbook 2,1. If I click on 'Monitor Settings' on the
'Preferences' menu, I just get an error box saying "Unable to get monitor
information!".
The brightness buttons at the top of the keyboard don't seem
Yes, I saw Ututo mentioned on the FSF list of approved distros, but this is
what I found when I looked into it as well. So, it seems like there is really
no libre version of Gentoo right now?
Version 7 of Trisquel comes with Pidgin installed by default. Telegram
doesn't seem to be available in the Trisquel repository, probably because
(according to the Wikipedia page) it contains binary blobs and the
server-side code is closed-source.
Ok, thanks for your advice Magic Banana. Although, it looks like a lot of the
non-free packages on that list could be avoided, e.g. by using Icecat instead
of Firefox and LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice.
GuixSD looks interesting - I'll take a look at it. Thanks ADFENO :)
So, it seems that services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc. are not
compatible with free software, because they employ DRM and require non-free
software to run (unless I misunderstand)?
In that case, is there any alternative movie streaming/download service that
is both legal and
Hi. Whenever I enable LibreJS, I seem to be unable to load this site
(trisquel.info); however, most other sites seem to load up (although possibly
with some JS disabled). In fact, trying to connect to trisquel.info with
LibreJS seems to completely crash Icecat and I have to restart it. Does
> Technically, it isn't against the law, to watch online. DMCA punishes the
uploader not the downloader/watcher.
Well, but if I'm using something like torrents or Popcorn Time, then I'm
going to be seeding the files for other people, so technically that could be
illegal, right? I'm not
I'm using Icecat on Trisquel and it seems tolerable, but not exactly speedy.
I haven't tried ublock origin (unless it's made it downstream into the
Trisquel version of Icecat).
Thanks for all the comments, this is an interesting read. Tbh, I think I'll
just stick to DVDs for now ;)
Which moves on nicely to my next question: what program is best for watching
DVDs?
Thanks Magic Banana. I have another question though: is this still be subject
to DVD region restrictions? I have a few UK DVDs (region 2) and they don't
seem to be playing using Totem on my US Trisquel laptop.
Uh oh. Sounds like LibreJS is a bit too good! :D
I tried a US DVD and that seems to play fine on Totem.
However, I installed the libdvdcss package and I still seem to be having
trouble playing region 2 DVDs. They don't work in Totem and if I try to play
them in mpv, it seems to decode some of the CSS keys, but then says 'Failed

I couldn't agree with this more, usename343. There can be no possible
justification for Firefox/Icecat sucking up half of my real RAM when there is
only one webpage open, JS or no JS. Someone seriously needs to dig into the
source and see what that thing is doing - its memory management is a
The mps-youtube method that was mentioned above seems to be working quite
well for me, although there are some vids it doesn't seem to be able to pull
and it seems to crash out completely if I search the name of most well-known
musical artists (e.g. Pink Floyd, Metallica).
Don't get me wrong here, I think Trisquel is an awesome project, but ... ;)
I'm starting to dislike the idea in general of relying on repositories of
pre-compiled binary packages that have to be maintained and kept up-to-date
manually. It seems very labour-intensive for the maintainers and
I don't really have a strong view on systemd myself. Tbh, I probably don't
understand enough of what it does and how it differs from the alternatives to
be able to judge its merits.
From what I've read, the thing that concerns me the most is the potential
'lock-in' if it becomes a
I just signed up for a disroot account, because it looks really good and they
seem to link in with Diaspora as well, which I want to try as an alternative
to FB. However, their webmail doesn't seem to run in Icecat with LibreJS
enabled, even though LJS isn't showing any scripts being
Working is good. I'm a big fan of things working! ;-)
I've been looking through the Disroot e-mail options some more, and they have
a feature where you can create custom 'identities'. For example, I just made:
'wa...@booble.com'.
Does that sort of thing suit your needs? I don't know where they stand on
green energy though ..
Adding trisquel.info/* to the whitelist for the version of LibreJS that was
installed with Icecat didn't help - Icecat still locked up when I tried to
access the trisquel site.
However, I installed the web extensions version and that seems to work ok.
So, I will use that from now on.
Sorry ADFENO, this is a bit beyond my level of expertise when it comes to web
coding stuff. But, thanks for looking into it anyway :-)
I'm a bit surprised there isn't more interest in this. Would anybody else be
willing to pay $500-600 upfront for a fully open, modern mainboard
alternative to Intel/AMD? Do people not think that target of 10,000 units
could be achievable by crowdsourcing? I admit that I don't have a very
This is very cool! I would think the free software movement should be able to
get 10,000 signatures together to crowdfund this. We would need to get a
firmer quote from them in terms of price/lead time; what the exact specs
would be and verify that it would be 100% libre. If the price really
> Specifications about a duo core x86 cpu, I should say suffice.
I'd be surprised if they would use a different CPU chip to the Talos II. It
seems doubtful that IBM would make a custom Power9 CPU/socket just for a
one-off run of 10,000 boards. I don't know, perhaps they would? Again, we
I haven't gotten involved with any crowdfunding before, but I had a quick
look at Kickstarter. It looks like the way it works is people pledge a
certain amount of money, but no money is charged unless the target is met.
So, it seems like there isn't anything lose by giving it a try ..
I
I'm trying to create a live USB on Trisquel 7, following the methods given on
this wiki page and I seem to be having some issues.
If I use the Startup Disk Creator tool, the USB doesn't seem to boot properly
through Libreboot. The same thing seems to happen, regardless of whether or
not I
Hi tonlee, seems like you're doing some great work on this and I think your
plan for campaigning sounds good. I have a couple of comments though:
Firstly, I strongly recommend going for a desktop ATX board over notebook. An
ATX board is very standard, so most people who already own a desktop
Ok, fair enough. But, would you be willing to pay $500 for it, if it's not
giving you any increased computing power over what is already available? I
wouldn't, personally.
As a general question: can Libreboot boot up using EFI-mode, as well as
legacy BIOS mode? E.g. if I connect a USB or external HDD that is configured
to boot with EFI, can Libreboot boot it?
Thanks for the link, SuperTramp83. However the link to the Debian img file in
that article doesn't work - it seems they have removed the
/current-live/i386/usb-hdd folder. I tried that same procedure before though,
using a Trisquel Mini ISO, and the result was bootable on my machine;
I'm currently using Trisquel 7 (with Libreboot) on a Macbook 2,1 that I
bought off of Ebay and it works great. Trackpad, sound, wifi all work great.
The only thing that doesn't work is the integral webcam, which I don't really
need anyway. It can play videos, YouTube, handle web browsing
Yeah, they do! There a nice wiki page here that provides details on how to
install/configure Libreboot and Trisquel. Only very specific Macbook versions
support it though (1,1 and 2,1), although you can get hold of one off of Ebay
very easily. That's where I got mine - had to replace the
Everymac.com says that the one I've got (I think) has an Intel GMA 950
graphics chip, which, according to Wikipedia, supports opengl 1.4. So, looks
like the answer to that one is 'no'.
I've just started using Disroot and they seem very good. They use only free
software and they say they do e-mail encryption (although I haven't tried
it), as well as free IMAP. They also host a Diaspora* pod, which is cool, as
well as cloud storage and some other cool services.
I had to
I'm not so sure it would make people more hesitant to criticize the FSF. If
they are embracing the concept of free speech then they shouldn't have a
problem with people dissenting or proposing alternative viewpoints. If you
are confident that your philosophy is strong, then it should be able
Hi, I'm just wondering what is the best way to install/use Tor with Trisquel?
I'm using Trisquel 7; however, the Tor Browser doesn't seem to be listed in
the Trisquel repository. Does that mean it's not technically libre?
If not, is it possible to use Tor with a different browser, e.g.
Ok, thanks for the advice. I'll download it and give it a try :)
Maybe this has been discussed before, but does anyone else find it a little
strange that there doesn't seem to be any FSF/GNU forum that is open to
everybody?
I mean, I would think the FSF would want to be the focal point for online
discussion and debate about free software, rather than
Thanks for your input, Ronmamita. I hope you find the assistance that you
need for your project :)
Sure, but IRC isn't the same thing as a message board. They serve different
purposes.
Ok. I have an Nvidia graphics card on my desktop, but I haven't installed
Trisquel on it yet. I'll check and see if nouveau works with it when I do.
Re. the 'artifacts': I'm starting to dislike Gnome in general, tbh. There is
a Java application I use that doesn't run at all well in Gnome
I have to confess, I've just been using YouTube's non-free JS, but this is
fricking sweet - thanks! :D
Do you know if there is any libre way to watch an Amazon Prime video? My wife
has an account and I tried to watch a vid the other day, but it wouldn't
play, presumably because of plugin
So, is OMB actually kaput, or is it just 'unreliable'? (not that that's much
better ..)
Interesting. What about Nvidia?
Thanks for the update, tonlee, although it is discouraging that Raptor will
not be able to provide specifications. In my opinion, for the crowdfunding to
have any chance at all, they would have to provide a firm quote first,
including specs, price, lead time, warranty details. As you say,
Why does it bother you so much?
I spoke to one of the guys at Disroot about this and he recommended uploading
the video to their cloud service (cloud.disroot.org). You can't embed it into
Diaspora from there, but you can share a link to family and friends that
allows them to play it in their browser, which seemed to work
No problem, Heather. I'm glad you are here too. I think we have a great
community here on the Trisquel forum and hopefully we can all move the cause
of free software forward together :-)
I haven't tried Firefox Quantum myself yet, but I will report back if/when I
do.
I assume it contains the Intel ME (and therefore would not be compatible with
Libreboot), if it contains a 'quad-core i7' chip?
My 2 cents: I think you will have a lot of difficulty getting Raptor to do
the crowdfunding on their website, seeing as they don't think the project is
viable and they weren't willing to provide a firm quote. Although I guess
there's no harm in asking.
Most crowdfunding sites that I've
Hi,
I'm just a user, but the impression I get is that right now there are not
many developers actively working on Trisquel. Those that are seem to be
focusing quite heavily on Trisquel 8, which is being seen as a high priority.
So, I think you will have difficulty finding a Trisquel
That's a great video! Stephen Fry just put on a +2 Baseball Cap of Coolness,
in my estimation :D
> It will be winded down such that it can work on a microatx mainboard which
has lower priced electronic components on it.
I would be very interested to hear more specific details about how it would
be 'winded down' and what that means. I.e. is it being clocked lower, or only
2 cores are
I was being sarcastic about Bieber being cool, btw - lol! XD
So, I have an account on Diaspora and I wanted to post a video to share with
some family and friends. However, it seems that you can't upload videos
directly there (which is fair enough, as it takes a lot of storage space).
But, it seems that you can embed videos that have been uploaded to
I agree with calher. Being 80% free is better than being 20% free ... :-)
I heard Santa's enrolled his elves in a Bash scripting workshop this year ...
XD
I quite like nano. It seems simple and pretty much does what I want. Although
I'd be willing to try something else, if someone can convince me of the error
of my ways.
Which one is best for coding?
No, I wasn't trying to be that clever ..
The joke was funny because it was mine - lol! XD
Yeah, this sounds very good :)
