I recommend you try out Diaspora (Facebook/Tumblr replacement) or GNUsocial
(Twitter replacement).
Of the two, Diaspora has been very good to find like-minded people. Usually
privacy-conscious, free software activists and other types of activists as
well. The secret to a good Diaspora
Side note: the default Abrowser and IceCat installations both have a security
bug where trying to geolocate your browser uses a Google API. You can turn
this off by setting 'geo.wifi.uri' to 'localhost'.
The bug has been reported https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?44633
On the issue of 2D/3D, I was wondering if Unity and Compiz would behave
normally.
Also, knowing whether HD videos are played well would be nice too. I have
used an old Macbook 2,1 with OS X and loading flash videos on YouTube was a
*very* laggy experience. Gnash and HTML5 may relieve that
Fantastic! I've added your note to the wiki page.
There's some useful info on fingerprinting here:
https://panopticlick.eff.org/
Can't these programs be hosted on Savannah?
Thanks a lot for your input! I was thinking of writing some documentation for
the trinquel.info wiki about running Trisquel on Macbook, based on the stuff
you informed us, but I don't know if it would be acceptable due to Macbook
being an Apple product.
What do you folks think?
So I created a wiki entry condensing all of the information on this thread:
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/macbook
If it's not too much to ask Eemeli, it would be wonderful if you could update
your kernel to the latest version to see if these issues persist. According
to h-node, updating
Thanks! I've updated the wiki page.
Besides the touchpad, was there any other change? Screen brightness, battery,
heat, 3D?
Exactly! I'd get a GNU sticker for sure. Also, Thinkpads don't look very
good, and design is about the only thing Apple got right in their products...
So I've been toying with the idea of buying a used Macbook 2,1, flash
libreboot and install Trisquel on it.
I know much has been said about GNU/Linux on Apple products, but there are so
many different Macbook models and GNU/Linux distros that it's hard to get an
accurate picture when
Fantastic! Thank you so much for your reply.
Just to be sure, what kernel version are you running on your Macbook?
Also, is hardware acceleration good for 2D and 3D?
Regardless, your browser is still sending out info that can be tracked
(besides cookies); see: https://panopticlick.eff.org/
Ruben's point was that if you did everything right to avoid browser
fingerprinting, that's when you'd REALLY stand out from the crowd.
DuckDuckGo has servers on Amazon, which could be a problem:
https://duck.co/help/company/architecture
I'd really love it if DDG freed their code, but it seems highly unlikely.
Scary stuff ):
Microsoft wants to steal the headlines and look cool with the kids. Nowadays
embracing open-source is a PR stunt to make people see your company
positively.
Take Debian's newest release for example. Microsoft stole all the media
attention by sending the Debian team a birthday cake.
Yeah, and remember: metadata is so informative that the US uses it to
assassinate unidentified people.
Most of these were already out before this announcement, I think.
I get that the FSF has a small staff, but I don't get why it's taking so long
for them to upload these videos. The only editing I noticed was adding a
white text with the name of the talk before the talk starts.
You can find some free alternatives to BetterPrivacy here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_shared_object#Editors_and_toolkits
I haven't tried it, but ClickClean seems to be an apt replacement for it.
PS: Do I need to worry about LSOs when I run Gnash?
There is a suggestion for Tutanota to comply with LibreJS, please upvote this
link to give support to the proposition:
https://tutanota.uservoice.com/forums/237921-general/suggestions/7502086-librejs-compliance
The link works fine here:
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installation-troubleshooting
Anything that Firefox/IceCat can incorporate into their code to increase
security is very welcome :)
Sorry, can you explain to me like I'm five years old? I can't find Gnash's
configs, much less change them.
I think the point is that you try so hard to protect yourself that in the end
you stand out and are more easily caught.
Ruben makes exactly this point in his 2015 Libre Planet presentation on
IceCat. Unfortunately privacy/security/anonymity need to be the default for
users, en masse, so
Great! I'll remove that from the wiki page then.
Any other news from the front?
Also, I forgot to ask you about Bluetooth. Does it work?
Why only those two?
Yeah, I mean the Free Software is for Freedom Lovers talk.
I mean, create one subforum in the Trisquel forums :P
A good idea is to install LibreJS. It's a guarantee that you'll only run free
JS: https://www.gnu.org/software/librejs/
Quite a lot: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/javascript-trap.html
Great! Thanks.
Are there any active admins or mods that can make this happen?
What if you flash libreboot from a distro like Ututo, would it work? Or does
libreboot require Trisquel/Parabola to work?
Nice! :)
I like how in the talk he avoided some of the lingo to make it more
understandable for the general public.
As of yet there is no support forum for Portuguese-speaking Trisquel users
anywhere on the web. Can we please create one? :)
If absolutely nothing else works, consider getting a wireless adapter
compatible with free software:
https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wireless-networking-gnulinux
Yeah. Also, Replicant is based off CyanogenMod, which means it only runs on
devices that CM also supports. If your device isn't supported by CM, there's
no way Replicant will support it either.
I don't think so, I mean, there are a few volunteer projects that reverse
engineer drivers, like nouveau or lima.
A very interesting talk on current issues related to hardware, firmware and
coreboot! I don't think libreboot was created back then (2013), so he doesn't
mention it. Well worth the watch!
Streaming page:
I found this, but I'm not exactly sure it's what you're looking for:

In my experience, TLP was worse than laptop-mode-tools (made it hotter, but
then again it wasn't an X200)
I suggest you try these and see which of them performs better:
http://itsfoss.com/reduce-overheating-laptops-linux/
Here's to hoping this one gets ported to Android (I'd love to see this on
F-Droid :)
Even when I didn't care/know about free software and privacy, I didn't find
GOA very useful either...
One thing the Librem CAN actually do is pay for a reverse engineering company
to decode the blobs, and then write software for it.
I guess theoretically the more programs you have on your computer, higher the
risk that one of them will have a serious bug. I think that's what he or she
meant.
Was this program included in the Trisquel repos, after all?
(Tom, when you have the time, I suggest you host the source code for all your
programs http://92.19.232.58:82/code/index.html on NotaBug.org :)
Apple: Work for us for free!
I hope it's not an insensitive question but how do you use your computer,
being blind?
Good job, team :)
This h-node entry recommends getting the latest Intel graphics drivers:
https://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/1135
Does anyone know if these drivers are fully free? Because if they were,
wouldn't they be already in Linux-libre?
Link: https://01.org/linuxgraphics/
While we're on the subject: why is ARM so badly supported?
Also, Trisquel's own browser add-on list:
https://trisquel.info/en/browser/addons
There are a few options you can still try:
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/play-videos-without-using-flash
Our safest bet is 32-bit? Why is it better than x86? (Sorry I'm not very
knowledgeable, but willing to learn)
Huh, I always had the impression that 64-bit and x86 were synonyms :P
Thanks!
There is an open thread at F-Droid for IceCat's inclusion:
https://f-droid.org/forums/topic/gnuzilla-and-icecat/
Still waiting for Macbook to come all the way from Australia (to Brazil!)
Nice!
Welcome! There are many active users in the forum that will help you with
troubleshooting :)
I also had this problem frequently with Icedove. One day I just gave up and
started using Evolution...
Yeah but installing from a .tar file still gives me chills. Why can't they
just make .debs?

What is the challenge in running Trisquel in an ARM architecture?
I may not be the only one suffering with this.
An issue was created for this by someone else:
https://trisquel.info/en/issues/14356
Yes it did for a small while. The servers seem really unstable lately.
You see, Coreboot is a libre project. All of the code they write is under a
free license. Despite that, most of the boards supported by Coreboot still
require some proprietary, nonfree programs to boot the system. Libreboot is a
distro of Coreboot that removes all the proprietary code in
I don't know, to be honest. But it's not compatible with Libreboot, sadly.
Agreed!
Please note that Coreboot contains proprietary blobs. For a free version of
Coreboot, I recommend Libreboot:
http://libreboot.org/docs/hcl/index.html#supported_list
For sure! H-node lists a lot of hardware that is compatible with Trisquel,
you can use that as a reference guide :)
I made a simple modification to their original logo, if you want you can use
it in the project. The original logo was released under CC-BY-SA 3.0, so I'm
also releasing this version under CC-BY-SA 3.0.
I had this one: https://github.com/KittyKatt/screenFetch
But it didn't make the Trisquel logo, just Tux ):
Thanks for the heads up!
Hey, how did you get that cool system info display?
Removed Red Eclipse from the list.
Hi all! I've imported a list of games that might be mistakenly seen as libre,
but are not. Have a peek: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/rejected-games-list
I created a live USB with FreeNetBootin and it seems to be working well,
apart from most files being still named unetbootin :P
Also, I think that Trisquel 32-bit and 64-bit should be in the same category.
Allowing the download of previous versions would be nice too.
so i think its best to try and finish my libreboot flashing utility first
Agreed! I'm really looking forward for that one. Also, thanks for using the
logo :)
I also posted it on Reddit for general knowledge:

If you are vulnerable to Logjam, then this workaround for Firefox is being
suggested:
call: about:config
search for:
security.ssl3.dhe_dss_aes_128_sha
security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_128_sha
security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_256_sha
Deactivate them all. Set them to false.
I'm using Abrowser. Maybe Iceweasel has already been updated with a fix?
I also switched to Trisquel this year after being annoyed with Windows 8, and
I haven't looked back since! GNU/Linux is very customizable and there are
always tons of options for getting things done.
I'm also not an IT guy and I installed Trisquel because of the free software
philosophy :)
There's a tiny subreddit for it: https://www.reddit.com/r/parabola/
Then he wonders why he's banned from every community he tries to join...
What an achievement!
I'm currently using uBlock, Disconnect, Privacy Badger and NoScript. Talk
about overkill!
Thanks for this!
With Microformats.org listing the jslicense rel attribute value as a proposed
HTML5 link type extension, sites can now have LibreJS-friendly links to
JavaScript License Web Labels pages without throwing HTML5 validation errors.
https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/rel-jslicense
Yeah, everyone says such bad things about Hurd that I expected the
benchmarking and last week's DistroWatch review would be a lot worse.
Same here. VLC 2.2.1 on Trisquel 7.

What a cute Firefox logo!
I feel guilty for saying this, but I feel good seeing this dumbass being
owned by everyone else in this forum every time he spews bullshit. My popcorn
is beside me.
Where have you heard that plan? There's an open issue for it at:
https://tutanota.uservoice.com/forums/237921-general/suggestions/7502086-librejs-compliance
Excellent news! Thanks.
I don't think so.
I love how you spelt the word transexual in the title.
Let this troll die of hunger please.
