And... sadly, it is not evident which messages have been introduced in Trisquel's forum through the website and which have been sent through e-mail. You can only find that if you check the headers. For instance, Caleb's original message has a header reading "Received: from bluehome.net (bluehome.net [96.66.250.149]) by correo.trisquel.info", so an experienced user could tell it arrived through e-mail. To sum it up: DO NOT report Trisquel's Forum messages to SpamCop unless you are experienced enough to check the headers and be sure that the spam arrived through e-mail. Mint got hacked because it was low-hanging fruit for nefarious types. They did not make it easy to verify GPG signatures or encourage people to, and the key wasn't in the web of trust. They did not update WordPress or their server software. They also create a mess of free and nonfree packages, so to stop things breaking they held back security updates from the repositories, and did not issue security disclosures. They did not have the resources to have their own distribution. They should have just produced packages for distributions. It was their own idiocy. This spam was just spam. Unrelated.

I found it odd in light of these events just how much the Mint Team where changing (or not updating) the underlying tech. Really worrying even if it is software I don't use. I merely assumed it was Ubuntu with a different desktop engine and a different package manager layout.

It was easy to use though. I think people liked it because it distributed Flash, Oracle Java, and all those codecs. They didn't sign packages for ages though. The blame must be attributed to the top: the lead developers put their users at risk, so they could obtain 'usability'. It was just a spin of Debian and Ubuntu that made catastrophic mistakes.

That wouldn't be all that effective. with 10 posts plus one new topic, it would only take 10 new accounts to flood the forum with 110 spam posts, some of them within existing topics and some of them as new topics. That's why I think making them approval-only at first would be best. There could be a notice saying that new accounts need their posts approved until X posts are approved and the account is at least Y days old. It would also be useful if a new account can be flagged by a moderator as suspicious or something and have that stop the account from gaining free-posting status until that mark is removed. So if an account is making several posts in a short period of time that aren't spam or against the rules, but aren't really contributing to the discussion, that mark could be applied to the account and the user could be notified as to why. Then it would be up to that user to earn the trust of the moderators, presumably by consistently posting things that are not spam. If the minimum post requirement is small enough (say, 15 or 20), it wouldn't be a particular burden (you would get that number of posts approved quickly if you're a semi-active user, and then it would just be a matter of waiting a short period for free posting status to be granted), and yet it would make spamming a lot too complex to be practical (having to create an account, make posts that aren't spam and aren't suspicious, and then wait for however long the wait period is, and then when you're done, having all your spam posts and your account deleted in the blink of an eye).

Well, exactly that's it, remember. Only the past can be remembered. The only way to combat spam is to report the issue on "Spammers be gone". Downvoting keeps the message there and it can (IS) be used to segregate the community into groups and not to allow free of speech. The more use of it, the yahoo answers the forum will look.

The spam filter can be a little overzealous sometimes. I was getting filtered for Spam when I was editing the documentation and I am a member + on the documentation team! I had to talk to quidam to get the issue fixed.
