This seems like a really neat solution, thanks. I really like the look of  
Guix as well. Glad I do not have to give up on protonVPN just yet.

The method in that thread still works, I just did it about a week ago. I  
prefer the protonvpn-cli package though, as it gives greater control over  
preventing DNS leaks.


On the github page there are some instructions for installing protonvpn-cli  
using guix: https://github.com/ProtonVPN/linux-cli/blob/master/README.md


Maybe you could try installing the guix package manager per chaosmonk's  
instructions here:

And then
guix install protonvpn-cli
