I recall one analysis of the success of the Groucho Marx version. One cause
for its success was is that people watching on TV loved Groucho Marx's
facial expressions. He spent a lifetime developing an ability to mug. The
show was broadcast on radio and wasn't nearly as funny.
The other is that
Ah yes, thank you and apologies, I see now I was looking at Criteria A and
thinking film had to meet two of those elements.
Still opposed to this in principle, but looks in practice this is a bit of
a nothing burger. Reads a bit like the elements of a Union contract, which
Hollywood has lots of
We've all forgotten Buddy Hackett's revival of the series for syndication
in 1980, with a greatly revised quiz. It only lasted a year.
Carsey-Wener produced the other revival (they also produced the sitcom
starring the host) and with Tom Werner's name mentioned in the article, I
guess he still

Pee-arr I found when looking for the one about Leno (q.v.)...
*· "The Weakest Link" will now premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 8-9 p.m.
and stay in that timeslot for three weeks until it moves to Mondays
beginning Oct. 19 where it will air at 10 p.m. following "The Voice."*

OK, I got one for ya: thanks to COVID, he tapes this outside somewhere

noise and bright colour when the secret word is uttered.

I'm the furthest thing from a Leno fan, but I actually don't hate this
decision. Leno's strength is (or, at least, used to be) his crowd work,
which makes him a decent fit for the YBYL format. Would I rather see
someone who's a more Groucho-esque type, like maybe John Mulaney, or even
After LOLing (JK, I was looking at Giller's Carl Reiner appearance on LS),
I deleted Steve's post from GG web.

Films must meet certain standards in only two out of four categories, and it
appears you're only quoting one of the categories ("Onscreen Representation,
Themes and Narratives"). The other categories are "Creative Leadership and
Project Team," "Industry Access and Opportunities," and "Audience
The BAFTA example is mentioned in the Deadline story. I’m against those
criteria too, on principle.
But are the criteria the same? The BBC story says 1917 qualified for the
BAFTA win because
“it met the criteria for creative leadership (it had a female co-writer and

On first reading, I was as exasperated with this news as many others are.
I'm not actually that interested in The Oscars either with the rampant
gaming of the system through big budget For Your Consideration campaigns.
But I mellowed on reading this BBC piece explaining how BAFTA in the UK *has
OTOH, I really enjoy the Oscars, or did. This move single handedly
trivializes the need to increase diversity in mass media representations in
popular culture, undermines substantive progress in actual diversity in
film, invalidates otherwise quality films that don’t meet the obviously

I may have mentioned in the past how much contempt I have for award shows
in general, and the Oscars in particular. While I applaud the sentiment of
trying to increase representation, the idea that art can somehow be
dictated by percentages and qualifications is ludicrous at best and
