We watched it come down about 100 feet directly in front of us. One minute there was tension in the rope, the next minute it was whipping around. We saw it come down way before NASCAR or Fox figured out what had happened. It came down on both ends of the front stretch. A few geniuses caught the thing as it was coming their way. Not sure if they were some of the ten people sent to the trackside medical center. Right - though I try to remind myself that with the Olympics we are not really dealing with NBC Sports per se, since they are trying to make their money back from so many non-sports fans. I posted this in fb/afl: A few years ago Anton [Fig] asked me to determine precisely when he'd become the longest-running drummer in late-night history. I spent a number of sleepless nights researching Ed's time as permanent member of the Tonight Show band and was able to pinpoint his tenure to within two weeks. That way I could then figure out approximately when Anton would match and then surpass Ed's (mid-December 2009). In the course of that research I learned that Ed had become the permanent drummer of the TS band in 1967. Most of his obits and profiles have him claiming to have gotten the position in 1963, but that was Bobby Rosengarden's chair until he left the TS band in '67. Ed had subbed for Bobby many times, perhaps as early as '63 (the two of them even played together at a TS gig at Shea Stadium in 1966), but his claim of being the permanent drummer that year is myth. And as much as he can try to take credit for Idol, it's still understood that Darnell turned it down the first time and only took it because Rupert himself demanded that they take it (under advisement from daughter Elisabeth, who as long as 21st Century Fox owns a piece of Shine makes her the likely successor if they keep it in the family). And personally, Fox's unscripted lately hasn't had much of the Darnell flair--I would say that only the new Does Someone Have to Go? (original title--Toxic Office) and last year's dating show mock of The Voice The Choice are the only entries that scream Darnell.
