The rule (as I'm aware of it) is that a misspelling is okay as long as what's written could be pronounced in the way the correct answer sounds. I could easily argue it's a silent t. For example, if the correct response was What is Amana? and a contestant wrote down What is Amanna? you could easy argue that the word *sounds* like there should be two ns in the word. Alex read it right, and he couldn't figure out what the wrong letter was (You added a p...). The kid even says it (quietly) once he realizes there's some doubt to it. If there was any doubt, the judges should've asked he what he wrote. He'd have pronounced it correctly (since we didn't know what the correct response was at that point). No harm, no foul. It was a ruling that only an asshole would make. If this is Millionaire, where it's the kid versus the house, I side with the kid. But this is a competition between kids, and it's unfair to the other contestants to say Hey, close enough, we know what you meant. I have to say I agree with Ben and Jay here. If the kid had written an e instead of an i between the c and the p, that would be a spelling error that arguably does not really alter the pronunciation of the word, but adding a t before the p does. I say this as a horrible speller myself, not as a spelling Nazi. It is not a spelling contest, but obviously there has to be some way to draw a line between a spelling that indicates a correct answer and one that does not; wherever that line gets drawn, there will be heart-breaking cases just on the other side of it. The traditional line drawn by Jeopardy seems as good as any. You could argue that Alex could tone down his usual dickishness when pointing out a contestant error, and have underlined more than he did that the kid obviously knew the right answer, but I don't think that counts as the Biggest Dick move in the history of the show (there are several to choose from). I guess you could also argue that kids that young should be placed in that situation in the first place. All of this seems to bury the main lead from that show, which is the balls on that kid who won to make that big bet. This wasn't even the first time a Final Jeopardy! misspelling was counted wrong in an episode involving children. The October 14, 2005, episode, from what was then called Back to School Week: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=563 Final Jeopardy! clue was At 81, this Pennsylvanian was the oldest delegate at the 1787 Constitutional Convention. The second-place contestant wrote Who is Bejamin Franklin? and was ruled incorrect. Because of how the wagering went down, she would have won the game if she'd been correct. And she would have been correct if she'd written just Who is Franklin?
