Re: [TV orNotTV] Ken Shapiro's Whereabouts
Thanks, guys. Not sure if this is the same guy. I think there's a sitcom director named Kenneth Shapiro who helmed a bunch of Everybody Loves Raymond eps and also had something to do with America's Funniest Home Videos. This all came up because I met Richard Belzer, Munch himself, on Thursday night. Insofar as Belzer was one of the ensemble of performers that contributed to Shapiro's The Groove Tube, I wondered what became of Shapiro himself. We all know what became of Belzer who, by the way, came off as engaged, sharp and genial in person. Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Broadchurch US re-Doctored
Aye. he's a Scotsman, which, of course, I knew, but ignored since he tends to work in the English sector of the UK these days. I'd agree that the whole remake idea seems pointless here, exacerbated by the presence of the same actor as the lead. He assures a fine emotional center for the redone series. But how can they improve on it by doing the same plot in the states with the same lead actor? It's seems like a been there - done that situation, especially if they stick to the story of the original. And I'd assume Tennant and Olivia Coleman are signed to reprise their roles in Series 2 of Broadchurch, For DT, this could mean all-Broadchurch, all the time - for at least a year. I know Tennant tried to crack the American TV market before (playing an American in the passed-on pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer), but this is certainly a remarkable way to go about it. We'll see how it plays out. Assuming they keep the title for name recognition, where do you figure this seaside town will be? I'd guess New England - which might be ideal for a lead actor from Olde England. :-) I'll be the pedant: He's from Scotland, not England. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! It's very jarring. In seasons prior, CBS has used the production company logos to separate program content from credits when there's no final internal break. For whatever reason, they've bumped the production company logos to after credits starting this season. I suspect someone there figured it would be jarring to go straight from program content to the promo and credits, so they decided to add the Next week on bit. RE: [TV orNotTV] Re: ABQ Paper Prints Something Involving Fictional TV Character
I don't think anybody expects everybody to watch *anything* live anymore, but if you wait five days before spoiling one of the most popular shows on TV, I think you've got a good point to argue from. If you love a show enough to bitch about spoilers, it shouldn't be expecting too much to think you'd get around to watching it sooner than a week after broadcast. I try to avoid giving away spoilers, but I'm not going to wait forever just because somebody's too lazy to clear out their DVR backlog. J I think Doug has the right of it here. I rarely watch anything, including sports and news events, live, and I try hard to respect the time-shifting practices of others (though I occasionally transgress, as I probably did recently here when I posted some observations about the Emmy broadcast shortly after it was over). But if I had recorded the broadcast of the presidential election results last November and then wanted to enjoy the suspense unfold a week later, I would hardly be in a strong position to criticize a newspaper for spoiling the results in their coverage the next day. Ditto for the winner of the Super Bowl. While not at the same level, a number of entertainments do qualify as pop culture news events, and will be covered as news, and are probably fair game for inclusion advertisements. As I type this I am watching the President Cup matches, time-shifted about five hours, and will be recording today's MLB post-season games for viewing later tonight. I have to remember to stay off of Facebook and other internet sites during this period. And if I fall asleep before seeing the end of one of the games, it is my responsibility to make sure to watch the rest of the game before watching the NFL games tomorrow, where the result may well (and fairly) be spoiled. It would be nice to solidify some kind of social contract where we can all agree on a spoiler-free safe harbor in unprotected public space - it seems like 7 days would be a reasonable time span. I think the TV ratings are now looking at Live+3, so maybe it should only be 3 days, but a week seems better to me. If you are not going to watch a TV event within a week, you probably should not expect anyone else to help protect you from spoilers. OTOH, one of my pet peeves are arrogant time-snob assholes on the east coast who are so quick to post spoilers online. I just barely escaped a FB post last Sunday evening, around 7:30 pm (the Breaking Bad finale did not air until 9:00 pm) which started: I can't believe There were no elipses or other spoiler prevention space in the original post, but I was able to avert my eyes and kill the page as soon as I registered a reference to BB and did not read the rest. I went back later and saw that the person had simply posted on their FB status a single sentence, about 10 minutes after the show finished on the east coast, stating what Walt ultimately does in the finale. There was no commentary, interpretation or higher criticism of any kind, just an apparent need to spoil the end of the program for everyone west of his time zone for whom the show had not even yet aired (my daughter, who watches her key programs while chatting or texting with friends in different cities, insisted that we watch BB live, so I had to suffer through commercials for the first time in my BB experience). I also do not appreciate it when media websites do something similar without regard for time zones. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People!
