Re: [TV orNotTV] Mindy Kaling's movie about a late-night show

2019-06-29 Thread PGage
I just got around to seeing it this evening. Everyone in it is likable, and
the film itself manages to be likable without actually being good. I had
the impression it was going to be about the first woman late night
broadcast TV host, and it is, but that is more of a B plot. Mostly the film
is a critique of the elite white male POV in late night TV. This part of
the film clearly is paralleling Dave. Apparently someone (Kaling or her
backers) thought this critique would either be easier to accept, or more
original and interesting, when made about a female-run show. Maybe - 10
years ago. But today, while the critique is accurate and even still
necessary, it is more like conventional wisdom than dangerous or
subversive. Also, the actual First Lady Host plot is fundamentally muddled
and incoherent. She is supposed to be a Letterman-like heroic trailblazer
who turned late night TV on its head 30 years ago with her innovative wit
and high standards, but who (also Dave like) became bored and disinterested
.ten years ago and has been turning out a mediocre product. But then that
means in this universe there has been a successful late night woman TV host
for 30 years already, so there can be nothing really new about that. Plus,
the plot has her finding her authentic voice, but repeatedly points out
that the show has never before done the kind of political, edgy,
controversial material that she is moving towards. But if that’s true, then
where did her reputation for being ashy and controversial come from in the
first place? Basically, the show never really lets us get to know the host,
then or now. It works ( kind of) because we know and love Emma Thompson,
and know her to be intelligent and witty and a woman with high standards,
so we assume the character must be like that too, even though we never
really see it.

The film is probably more revealing about the current state of the
television business than it is about gender in late night. Even though
audiences seem to like it more than I did, the film is predicted to lose
Amazon $40 million (
https://variety.com/2019/film/news/amazon-late-night-flop-bob-berney-exit-1203254436/).
Yet some are arguing the box office is not the way to evaluate the
financial impact of this and other Amazon theatrical releases; Amazon is
focused on dramatic and comedy series, and straight to service films. The
theatrical releases. With their big marketing budgets, function as
commercials for Amazon.com in general, and will drive new views to stream
the film after its theatrical run, and also drive broader consumer product
purchases across its platform. So even a big loser can be a win for them.

They'd figured the first of two Yankees/Red Sox clashes at London (Olympic)

event following at 4pm east.

At 4.30 they'd only played 5½, with the Yanks up 17-6. (The US Senior Open

There was a mascot race, for those who enjoy them here: Freddie Mercury, HM
King Henry VIII, Winston Churchill, and the Loch Ness Monster

(ESPN link).

Mr Buck was served a massive "hot dog" (north of a foot, I think) with
plenty of toppings.

Quite a classy entry for the channel best known for many years, as one of
their own execs put it, "The Three Fs--films, football and f--king" (the
soft core porn was dropped years ago). Still, their highest-profile shows
are still the Aussie soaps "Neighbours" and "Home and Away" (it is believed
that those shows have stayed on the air primarily due to the Channel 5
deals in the UK--it hasn't helped "Neighbours" any that Network 10 in
Australia runs the show on a flanker channel instead of the main channel).
