[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem

2021-09-06 Thread Kevin M.
Not sure if “Beyond Salem” is the best title, as they only get as far as
the land of stock footage. It’s an interesting concept, to bring back
actors who tried to make it in prime time to reprise their daytime roles
from 10, 20, 30 years ago. The guy from “The Nanny” and the sassy one from
“227” and one of those Real Housewives are all on the hunt for the jewels
stolen from a golden peacock.

Found on the Peacock streaming service.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Whew! returns to television

2021-09-06 Thread Diner
I haven't watched the episodes on Buzzr yet... but over the weekend Tom
Kennedy's nephew Jack Narz Jr. posted "Pilot #3" on Facebook. Different
music, but the opening, the set, and the gameplay are the same. (Here's the
link, though I am not sure if he made it public or
not: https://www.facebook.com/JackLNarz/videos/2904808586440767/ )

As you noted, Kennedy is really struggling here in the early going to
explain the rules. He doesn't have his patter down yet. I also noticed on
the pilot that he does not actually say the name of the show until the
final seconds - he just refers to it as "our game." By the time the show
started, he was almost always pronouncing and explaining the title in the
opening moments. (One of the new Buzzr promos mispronounces the name,
putting an "sh" in there for some reason. After four decades, this still
remains a hurdle for the show - one that was completely avoidable.)

I was fourteen in 1979, outgrowing my early obsession with comic books and
cartoons - though not my obsession with game shows. When I watched the show
back then I thought its comic-themed graphics (and its title) were
embarrassingly childish. (This show aired weekdays on CBS - to this day I
wonder "Did they really think housewives born in the 1930s were going to
watch this?") I couldn't get past all of that to pay much attention to the
gameplay. Years later I saw some episodes on YouTube and thought "Wow, this
is actually a pretty decent game. Too bad all that other nonsense got in
the way of its good qualities."

[TV orNotTV] Re: Whew! returns to television

2021-09-06 Thread 'Dave Sikula' via TVorNotTV
Well, I'm in the middle of my third episode, and while I'm not sure if I
like it, it's watchable.

The first episode was something of a train wreck, as host Tom Kennedy was
struggling to remember and explain the rules and keep things on track. (As
I write this, Kennedy just forgot the name of one of the contestants, and
the other one had to correct him.)

Based on the description, I was expecting/hoping for more chaos and
complications, but once one understands the rules, it's pretty simple and
straightforward. Its graphics and technology are pretty much of the 70s,
and the questions are -- well, let's not say they're Jeopardy-level.

Overall, it feels neither unique enough to be compelling nor enough of a
museum piece to be a novelty (as are the reruns of the 1960 "Price Is
Right" to which I'm really addicted). I don't know if I'll be around for
all 250 of them, though the celebrity episodes may be of interest.
