I now I am supposed to agree with you about this, but I don’t. The western
world was racist, misogynist and imperialistic in the 1960s. That sucked. I
was a kid in that decade, and even I knew that’s how it was, and how much
it sucked - I didn’t need Twitter in the second decade of the 21st century
to enlightenment me. But I don’t expect the cultural products from the mid
century to be censored or bowdlerized, not just because that would mar the
product, but because it would also cover up the fact of the transgressive
customs. See recent thread on the Julia Child mini series.

I am a huge fan of Le Carre’, who is positioned as the anti Bond, but I
find I can enjoy both. I am not a fan of the Roger Moore era, but the Bonds
that followed were increasingly less chauvinistic, and even somewhat less
ethnocentric.

The idea of a small group of intelligence service officers who are allowed
to make crucial life and death decisions affecting international relations
with potentially catastrophic consequences is I think an inherently
interesting set-up, and while Bond may not be as cynical and world weary as
George Smiley, he often knows enough to be almost as distrustful of his own
side, and of careerist conformity and ass kissing, as he is of the other
side. That’s not bad.

That ceremony lost any credibility around the time they had people in Star

I will say that, when I'm there for the TCM Festival, the forecourt is closed
to anyone but people connected with Festival, and the frustrated looks of
tourists craning their necks to see remnants of people they've never heard of
is a delight. It's the same feeling I got about ten years ago, when a family

which honors the late longtime film critic of the LA Times, rather than the

I didn't have the heart to tell them ...

The Beatles movies were on par with the Elvis movies, but the Beatles

Sinatra had some bad movies, too, but as the examples you referenced

gravitas. That said, “4 for Texas” starring Sinatra, Dean Martin, a Bond
girl, AND the Three Stooges is, in this writer’s humble opinion, so bad it
is good.

A Hard Day's Night is exactly the type of movie one would want Elvis to
make. The producers got Dick Lester to direct and he wasn't beholden to any
Hollywood tropes. He put together a documentary style movie that got to
show The Beatles having fun and being cheeky and self-deprecating. And he
got the requisite amount of musical numbers in. Help didn't reach those
heights. I'm trying to imagine an Elvis version of Yellow Submarine and
um...

As a mental exercise I've been trying to think of what would have happened
if a good director of the Elvis era movies had made a movie with him.
Someone like Stanley Kubrick, John Huston, or John Frankenheimer. First, I
think Tom Parker, or whoever handled these things in Elvis's management,
would have sent back the script and said "no way." If they did manage to
get it to the shooting stage the director would probably get rid of Elvis
within a week for not being up to the material. Hollywood wanted cheap and
easy Elvis movies and that's what they put together for him.

Considering how little money was spent on those early Bond films, we should
be grateful any explosion was featured at all. Sean Connery had to pay for
his own hairpieces back then.

The more I think of Bond, both in the novels and the movies, the less I
like him. I'll grant there's a limit to how much we can judge characters
from another era by today's standards but Bond is drawn to appeal to
adolescent boys. He embodies the worst of white attitudes at the end of the
colonial era and he is an out-and-out misogynist.

[TV orNotTV] Amazon and sports this side of the pond

2022-07-01 Thread Adam Bowie
Amazon has just acquired one game a week in the UK for the Champions
League. This is the pan-European club soccer competition that airs on
Paramount+ (and occasionally CBS) in the US.

Prior to this deal, BT Sport was the home of all games. It's essentially
the second sports channel to Sky Sports in the UK. However recently BT and
Discovery Warner Media entered into an agreement that would see BT merge
with the Discovery owned Eurosport.

The fact that BT did renew its deal exclusively suggests another bit of
Discovery Warner curbing their spending.

Amazon only gets one game a week - but it's the first pick of Tuesday
games. UEFA schedules games evenly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, alternating
the day teams play. So a Manchester United or Liverpool will play evenly on
both days.

Also announced was the BBC will get Champions League highlights airing on
Wednesday evenings at 2200. Highlights are still a popular way to watch
games in the UK outside of big tournaments, so this isn't incidental. That
means some fans will be sated with a live game on Tuesday via Amazon, and
highlights of the rest free on the BBC. If they already pay for Prime they
maybe won't also need BT Sport. I'll definitely think about that!

Amazon already has a limited number of Premier League games in the UK, but
it's just two rounds (of 38) so they all happen in a very short window each
season. This is a much bigger move for Amazon, perhaps bigger in a sense
(though not financially) than the Thursday NFL game they've got. Amazon's
ambitions are clear...

[TV orNotTV] ‘Why Women Kill’ Canceled at Paramount+ Despite Season 3 Renewal

2022-07-01 Thread Diner
My friend Kerry O'Malley is a semi-regular on this show. She just posted on
Facebook: "I was on my way to Vancouver on Tuesday to shoot three
episodes Heartbreaking. I love these people and this show. We did table
reads of 301 and 302 this week and I was so delighted with this season’s
premise and the cast they put together. This business is just so hard."

[TV orNotTV] 'Duncanville' Gone at Fox After 3 Seasons

2022-07-01 Thread Mark Jeffries
This was after supposedly a fourth season was ordered for the Amy Poehler
animated series--six completed episodes will stream on Hulu later this year:

https://deadline.com/2022/06/duncanville-canceled-fox-3-seasons-1235054886/

The series, co-owned by Fox with Disney's 20th and Universal (and animated
by Fox-owned Bento Box) was an attempt to revitalize the aging Sunday
Animation Domination block, still carried by those long-running shows that
Disney now owns ("The Simpsons," "Family Guy," "Bob's Burgers").They keep
trying, though, with Dan Harmon's "Krapopolis" scheduled for fall, so Marc
Berman will still be able every Monday to call for Fox to cancel the shows
already.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: NoTV: Arclight and Pacific theaters closing in SoCal

2022-07-01 Thread Mark Jeffries
Meanwhile, most of the Arclights have been taken over by AMC. The Chicago
one has reopened with very little changes as to the interiors, except that
the wonderful schedule board has been turned off and of course, Maria
Menunos, Perri and the Black guy who holds his clipon mike instead of
wearing it before the shows instead of the pretty light shows to film
soundtracks. And Nicole Kidman right before the movie saying "they AH."

I've been going to the Dome since 1963 or 64, when I saw "It's a Mad,
Mad, Mad, Mad World." (That night has always stuck in my mind because we
had dinner at a long-gone diner across the street and I spilled a glass of
milk all over my sister.) I saw everything from "2001" to "1941" there (so
my track record for lousy movies is pretty strong).

I would imagine that either another chain or, especially, a streaming
service will purchase the place, as it would give them a nice opportunity
to showcase their own product and make nice with the other studios and
indies by playing their stuff. My ideal scenario, though, would involve
Netflix selling the Egyptian back to the Cinemathque and buying the Dome
 complex.
