Re: [TV orNotTV] Mini review: The Wheel

2022-12-20 Thread Jim Ellwanger
A couple of other notes I have to pass along...

- These shows were taped in October 2021.

- Michael McIntyre, the host, often complained about having to repeatedly say
"it's one in three, who's it gonna be," saying that NBC forced him to have a
rhyming catchphrase.

- McIntyre also pointed out that, in trying to sell the show overseas, they'd
emphasized to NBC that it was the highest-rated show on British television in
2020... but didn't mention that when it aired, it was really the only show
airing new episodes.

Re: [TV orNotTV] It’s Not HBO (It’s Max)

2022-12-20 Thread Stan S

Meanwhile, HBO still has Cinemax. It confused me that HBO Max didn’t really
roll in the Cinemax brand. After all, their streaming used to be called
“Max Go”. Besides the valuable channel space I wonder why the linear
Cinemax channels still exist.

So after all that money that they spend, WBD will release a “Max” app and
people will wonder why they suddenly need Cinemax.

While I'm sure someone somewhere has done some research that says that
HBO is considered too premium/male/old-skewing for some consumers, I'm not
sure I'd buy that. It just takes one hit show to wipe away those
 perceptions.

Surely you just go with the brand that has the biggest impact. "HBO"
means good TV. "Discovery" means... well we sort of understand what it
means. "Max" means nothing to anyone.

Every other streaming brand has taken its strongest individual brand
and built off that. CBS All Access becomes Paramount+ because more people
know Paramount than CBS - particularly if you have global aspirations
(there not being a bunch of CBS channels out there in the wild). Disney+
wisely trades on their most valuable asset - their near century-old brand
(I'm also firmly of the belief that ABC, FX and Hulu shows can all be
wrapped into a single app, just becoming tiled sub-brands within it,
exactly as they're doing in the ROW). Peacock is a meaningless brand
outside the US. Nobody has a clue who they are, or why it's named after a
bird that was kept by wealthy aristocrats. But then NBC's global presence
is largely limited to a financial business channel, because even though
viewers throughout the world know NBC shows, they're not branded as such
 (Friends is Warners etc).

WBD is going to have to spend so much money explaining who they are
to consumers when they already had two perfectly good brands that already
explained that. Their rivals will be scratching their heads wondering at
the madness of it all. "HBO" already has lots of value globally. Game of
Thrones on its own is enough to say "We make TV you want to watch"
 globally
 - no more, no less. Throw in something like "Euphoria" and I think you're
 done.

Similarly, "Discovery" is another decades old brand which instantly
tells you what you need to know about its programming. Why any marketing
person would want to ditch those powerful brands is beyond me. All their
marketing is going to have to have to explain it all over again to
consumers. I mean unless they're going to pivot entirely on what they
 make,
and for all the cuts that WBD is making, I don't think Zaslov actually
 wants to do that.

Also, I'd be amazed if they don't run into IP issues with the name
"Max" all over the world because it's such a simple name, and there will
 be
dozens of businesses in overlapping areas. There definitely *will* be
territories where they simply can't use it - at least unless they start
 writing massive cheques.

I don’t know if it was a paid promotion, but Howard Stern ranted about this
very thing last week before his show went on year-end hiatus. Playing the
average guy, he needed a couple of people to explain the difference between
Paramount+ and Paramount Network.

For the benefit of the rest of us, Paramount Network is the Bar Rescue
channel.

I still haven’t figured out why there’s a separate CBS app when Colbert
mentions Paramount+ constantly. Is there overlap between the CBS app and
Paramount+ or is the CBS app just for streaming prime time on delay?

[TV orNotTV] Emmys Try to Avoid Gang Nominations for Series, Redefine Variety Categories

2022-12-20 Thread Mark Jeffries
The Television Academy has changed the policy allowing members to make
unlimited nominations for a program in each category, making them limited
to the number of nominations per categ(usually five), in an attempt to keep
one show from dominating the acting categories as "White Lotus" and
"Succession" did last year. In addition, the variety show categories have
been redefined from Variety Talk and Variety Sketch into Talk and Variety,
defining the former as predominantly unscripted interviews and discussions
and the latter as predominantly scripted segments, in noticing that there
aren't that many sketch shows around these days (but not wanting to piss
off Lorne by not giving "SNL" its discrete category):

https://www.thewrap.com/emmys-change-rule-hog-nominations/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7192059

Which seems to me to be a way to get the 100% scripted John Oliver show out
of the talk show category where it wins year after year, especially since
nobody's doing variety shows these days that fit the category except for
between 11:30 and 1 every Saturday night on NBC and Peacock.

That's the version I watched (some of). I can't imagine a US version would
find a way to improve it, and based on this thread, I'm fine with not
checking it out.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Mini review: The Wheel

2022-12-20 Thread 'David Bruggeman' via TVorNotTV
Barmageddon is also very honest about being stupid.  It's basically the same
kind of games East Coast and British Jimmy do on their shows, but without the
annoying Jimmys.

I'll try The Wheel again, but what little I saw last night suggested it wasn't
much more than "Millionaire" with a celebrity phone-a-friend for every question
and lots of moving parts.

I might have to take one for the list and see if the Blake Shelton/Carson Daly

How did Steve Kornacki get sucked into a chair on that show? Wow

I see from wikipedia that this show has a history from the UK.

The Wheel (game show) - Wikipedia

Maybe I was just put off by the lights, flashyness, and physical logistics
of chairs rising and spinning.

And I must share this clip from Friends
Friends | Joey, Ross, and Chandler Play Bamboozled | HBO Max - YouTube
