Interesting hearing that about F1. With Jimmy doing that bumper car race I
thought they were promoting that EV race in Brooklyn.

I live in the heart of NASCAR country now and its popularity has seriously
faded in the last decade or so.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Quickie Review: Lingo w/RuPaul

2023-02-04 Thread Diner
Pretty spot on.

One other thing that annoys me is how they prime the audience to applaud
over and over for no reason. Ru asks a contestant where he's from, the
contestant replies "Little Rock, Arkansas," and it gets a HUGE round of
applause. Then that contestant's partner gets asked the same question, and
he mentions a town in Arkansas that nobody outside Arkansas has ever heard
of, and that gets just as big a round of applause. Oh, and did I mention
this show tapes in Manchester, England? Why are people in England giving
huge rounds of applause for Podunk, Arkansas? Who knows.

I actually watched some episodes of the Bill Engvall version a few months
ago on Pluto TV - basically to help me fall asleep! It was an okay way to
spend a half hour, but I remember thinking at the time that the scoring was
all screwed up and that the bingo element complicated the game
unnecessarily. I actually thought "instead of playing to win numbers on a
bingo board, they should play for money, but have the money decrease as
they go down the board." And whaddaya know, that's exactly what this new
version does. Except even with the improvements to the gameplay, it's still
not remotely exciting. (Hey, neither is "Wheel of Fortune," so what do I
know?) But it's a fairly pleasant (if annoyingly repetitive) way to spend
an hour.

One more game show-related thing: the "Superfans" edition of "The Price is
Right at Night" that aired this week was a wonderful celebration of the
show and why the fans love it, and it seemed, as Adam Nedeff wrote, a love
letter to the fans. Catch it on cbs.com.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Tony Romo to be CBS sports analyst

2023-02-04 Thread PGage
“Intervention” is a loaded and distorted term, as the CBS folks note in the
article. They met with him last offseason to go over some notes, and I
suspect to try to keep his motivation up after he signed that huge long
term contract. Also, there is a history of analysts have souring
relationships with Jim Nantz, and it seems they were worried some of the
early bloom was coming off the rose of that partnership.

I thought Romo‘s broadcasting talent was exaggerated when he started, and
now his decline is being exaggerated as well. When he first started he
could rely on his knowledge of the league and players from when he was
playing; now he needs to do more homework to stay on top of things, and
that is not his jam. His Gee Whiz schtick was bound to wear thin. Still, I
find he still dies about as good a job as any ex QB giving the viewer a
sense of what the keys are, and which particular throws are most difficult.
He’s not great, but I don’t think he sucks either.

And of course F1 is owned by John Malone (the largest private landowner in
the US according to the Wikis). Not sure is one of his corporate interests
is getting more directly into carrying F1 (he used to own a couple of CBS
affiliates).

I have been into F1 for a couple of years now, and have been watching it in
the F1 App, but they are easily watched on ESPN.
