2013-04-11 Thread David Bruggeman
Even more than the many written tributes this past week, the memorial
reinforced to me how much I didn't know about Mr. Ebert.  More to the point, I
quite underestimated the extent of his non-television work.

Kevin is spot on about the production, but I had the impression that the
streaming was, not an afterthought, but something that was a last minute
addition.

They do not operate on the same world of logic as rational people, so
there is no direct link to their stupidity and the funeral of a film
critic/social critic. By their reasoning, the death of any sinner is
cause to celebrate and publicly shout their hate speech. And since
Roger Ebert had a functioning brain, he never accepted their idiotic
claims, which means by their definition he is a sinner who deserves to
rot in hell.

It is hard to see your description of him before before 2010 as a cool

about him and his family, but I guess when I think of him it will always be
most prototypically not as your 2.0 version, but more than 1.0, especially
sitting in the balcony, and inviting us to see him at the movies.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: RIP Roger Ebert

As I sit here reading various articles and tributes and tweets about Roger
Ebert, I've just recalled that I found TVBarn because of him. I can't recall
if it was a blog post or an online article I stumbled upon, but I distinctly
recall he said that Aaron Barnhart's TV Barn was one of the sites he
 checked every day.

Not sure how much time Aaron spends browsing this message board these
days, but he posted a few thoughts on Roger Ebert's passing publicly
on his Facebook, so I doubt he'd mind me copying and pasting them here
(he also posted a photo of himself with Gene and Roger):

On Oct. 22, 1994, I was thrilled to receive a message that Roger had
joined my email newsletter list. A few hours later, I got this: I
have received my first issue of Late Show News and enjoyed it
immensely! Where has this publication been all my life? Thanks! Roger
Ebert. That, as much as my first check from the Village Voice, told
me I had arrived. How many more nice things he said about my work over
the years. Business gurus and spiritual leaders preach generosity but
Roger, that old idealist-skeptic, practiced it every day over a
career. RIP.
