Hi John, It sounds like you're talking about our annotations feature. At the moment this feature isn't deployed to more than a handful of developers who attended our Hackfest but we hope to allow more access to it soon. At the moment we're focusing on making the site stable again.
To answer your query, a developer could put a direct link to an image as an annotation, and another client could display the image if they supported that annotation. There is no requirement for a client to support an annotation and it is an open system so developers are free to use a type in anyway they wish. That being said we have issued some guidance of more commonly used terms which we hope developers will consider when writing their solutions. As a developer you should be prepared for your annotation to be ignored by other clients, and expect the same annotation type to be used by somebody else, and maybe in a different way.
