If you're using the profile_image_url from the API, you can remove the "_normal" from the suffix to get the original size, although you have to make sure the user doesn't have a default image.
You can also use this API method: http://dev.twitter.com/doc/get/users/profile_image/:screen_name The response from that API method shouldn't be used directly as an image source, though.
