We look forward to seeing you at this year's 3rd annual North Carolina Jewish Film Festival from February 22-25, 2001 at the Carolina Theatre in Durham! Patrons of the festival can celebrate the diversity of Jewish history and culture at North Carolina's premiere Jewish cultural event through the more than twenty internationally acclaimed films and short features from around the globe. A complete schedule will be available shortly, and will be featured in the Feburary 7th INDEPENDENT WEEKLY. Patrons are able to purchase a "Five-Pack" of film tickets for $25.00. Single tickets are $6.50 and can be purchased in advance. Advance ticket sales begin February 5. Tickets can be purchased at the Carolina Theatre Box Office at 309 W. Morgan Street. The festival will open with the highly acclaimed Yana's Friends by Arik Kaplun, a comedy set in Tel Aviv on the eve of and during the 1991 Gulf War which won 10 Israeli Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1999. Another opening night film is Kippur, an Israeli standout on the 1973 war by the director of Kadosh. >From Swastika to Jim Crow is a fine documentary featuring local scenes and >personalities (including John Hope Franklin). Isa Kremer focuses on the courageous >life of a once famous Yiddish-singing diva and activist, and is preceded by Yiddish >Karaoke (find out where Mein Shtele Belz originated, and sing some old favorites). >Yiddishist Sheva Zucker and historian Warren Lerner from Duke will add their >perspectives. Left Luggage stars Maximilian Schell and Isabella Rossellini in an emotional story of how a young student learns to understand her parents' denial of their Holocaust Survival. Voyages was a recent favorite of the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Emmanuel Finkiel (an assistant director of Kieslowski's Red, White and Blue trilogy) Voyages masterfully intertwines the contemporary stories of three survivors thru three countries in five languages. Kurt Gerron's Karussell is a German film focusing on one of Weimar Germany's greatest actors, who later directed the Nazi propaganda film on Thereisenstadt. Making a Killing, a British-made documentary on the current implications of art stolen by the Nazis, is followed by a talk by John Coffey, chief curator at the NC Museum of Art. Rashi is a thrilling animated historical drama about the great Rabbi and scholar. Peace of Mind features some of the participants in the Seeds of Peace camp of Israelis and Palestinians, and will be followed by a Q and A session with one of the filmakers. Happy Birthday Mr. Mograbi is a "mockumentary" on the Israeli-Palestinian situation by the director of "How I Learned to Overcome My Fear and Love Arik Sharon". But wait-there's more! I'm Losing You, Packing for Two, Village of Idiots (direct from Chelm via Canada), The Assistant (based on the Bernard Malamud novel), and Paragraph 175 (co-sponsored with the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival). Triangle community involvement has increased for the NCJFF 2001. A live performance on Sunday February 25 featuring Jewish music by six local choral and instrumental groups will be a fun family event. Performers include instrumental group Mispacha, choral group Mappamundi, the Triangle Jewish Chorale, klezmer artists Magnolia Klezmer Band and South of Delancey, as well the Rabbi, the Russian and the Blonde (featuring Beth Meyer's Rabbi Bockman). The community resource room will house children's storytelling hours, educational lectures, information booths from many Jewish organizations throughout the state and children's art exhibits.
