and, first off, thanks a bunch for quite a load of comments, even though
none of them really managed to address the problem. Good news, however,
is that I still managed to _finally_ get it working:
- Starting with one of the hints over here, I tried to eventually use a
clean typo3

not sure whether this is (still?) a known issue, but somehow we have a
problem getting the RTE in typo 4.2.12 to work. At the moment, it's
rather straightforward: Most of the t3 functionality seems to work,
except for any click on any Edit in Rich Text Editor button which ends
up in a

Try enabling the troubleshoot mode in the EM settings of the Htmlarea RTE, that
may give a pointer in useful direction.

Paths of JS or Pics are very long in RTE.
Unpacking these files on the server may cut some filenames
