Problem has been solved. In case anyone else is experiencing the same
problem: this was caused by an upgrade of the PCRE lib for the Linux
distro on which the site is hosted. Downgrading fixed it.

In one site we have a strange behavior of the word Rescue - it gets
displayed as Rescü - ae stays ae - oe stays oe etc but ue changes to ü in
the frontend.
In the backend everything gets displayed correct!
