Sorry, but I have to disagree. Whether or not using the Named COMMON is basically a good practice is beside the point. There is something wrong somewhere when a subroutine takes progressively longer to execute each time it is called, even though there is nothing accumulating anywhere. The Named COMMON trick doesn't really address that issue, but remains a work-around to mask the problem.
The other thing the Named COMMON did show was that issue has to do with the file handling in Universe, since that was the only thing we changed to relieve the problem.
