Re: [U2] [u2] Professional Development

2012-06-12 Thread David Jordan
The issue is that pick jobs are not disappearing, it is an issue that they are
changing as in all technologies. There is a move from internal custom
applications to packaged solutions. U2 sales are growing but it is in ISV
solutions. What is a problem is a mismatch of current skills and new demands
for skills.

The U2UG is setting up a professional development program to help build skills,
career opportunities and opportunities. However we need your feedback to make
this work. U2 developers and sales people are professionals whse skills go
beyond just pick code. As a user group we want to create an environment to
recognise that professionalism that can be put on a CV. We are looking at how
to expand training opportunities and keep costs down.

This is an opportunity to raise U2 experience and awareness and I look forward
to your support in helping the user group to help its members.

David Jordan

When I suggested you check ads in the MidEast or Asia, I completely
forgot about Africa. (Shame on me) I probably get more enquiries from
the African continent about T24 connectivity (with mv.NET) than
anywhere else. And I'm talking Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and all
over the map. T24 is also big in Europe.

Wil's comment seems to indicate that they're just waiting over there
for the US of A to jump in and provide them services. Dude, it's the
other way around. They already have competent developers eager to
offer services to the rest of the world. The approach should be less
opportunistic and a more humble request for partnership with people
who already know their markets. (Although suggesting to Americans that
they should take a humble approach to foreign affairs seems to be akin
to treason these days. LOL)

So there you go. Those software houses that are struggling in the

The biggest problem we have experienced as Pickies has been that no-one has
ever heard of it. Now, when there is evidence that someone is learning it,
the likes of @PaulWilson shout, scream, and throw their toys out the cot...
go figure!

Whereas Java is an 'open' language with zillions of sites telling one
EXACTLY how to code, Pick is as closed as it comes. Info is extremely
difficult to come by unless you reach a group like this... and who tells a
newbie that UniVerse is Pick? Or jBase or D3 or Revelation or...

Yes, I know it is annoying for some having to be reminded we all started
somewhere.
Yeah, I'm all for helping people know about this thing called Pick.. I've
been doing it for over 30 years, like some other folk around here, but I'm
still not going to get around to every site to fix their code. It'll be
nice to know there's a growing fraternity of newcomers to it.. it might
give reason for companies to invest in it, and not see the lack of Pickies
as reason to think there is no long term investment value...

If you think that another 2000 pick-ites will put you out of a job, you
need to lift your eyes to the horizon. There are at least 4400 installed
sites of Globus / T24, a banking app this is growing new programmers... and
even you will not be able to service the workload...

If it is an SQL table it may be a conflict with table rules. Ie you cannot

2012-06-12 Thread Charles Stevenson

Another cause:

If the write is to a record that someone else has locked (shame on you
for not explicitly locking it 1st), the 040019 error occurs on 20 minute
timeout. (That default can be changed.)
Search for 040019 on this list's archives. There are several less
than definitive discussions about it.

That's where I've encountered it. Went on a wild goose chase recently
looking for that cause until I found the value-mark-in-the-id problem
also causes it. David Jordan's sounds similar: mv data where
single-valued expected.

How many others?

Re: [U2] [UV] Program X: Line 2, WRITE failure. ( SYS.MESSAGE 040019 )

2012-06-12 Thread Charles Stevenson

Here's from a similar discussion from 2005 below. No solution then.

But I just thought of something I wish I'd thunk of 7 years ago. I
can't make a write cough up 040019 during this condition, but maybe
someone else can build on on it:

For type-19, all ids hash to the same lock semaphore set for the lock
table. If the lock table isn't big enough, you lock a lot of them
(e.g., you forgot to release them by mistake) it is very easy to get this:

READU threshold reached, lock on XYZ denied!

(The hashing for the lock table is similar in principle to file
hashing. The device, inode, the target id's group number determine
which lock semaphore applies. For type-19 there is no group, so same
semaphore for entire dir.)

Subject: [U2] DATABASE write problem

Hi, I am facing a problem wherein a WRITE operation to a type 19 file
is failing in some cases. The call to STATUS() function within the ON
ERROR clause returns error 40019. Strangely this problem does not occur
for all the writes operations, but approximately 100 times (out of 60K
write operations). The record id contains the current time, so it
doesn't seem to be an issue of 2 concurrent writes using the same record
id. A point to note that this file has read and writes happening
simulatneously i.e. A process keeps writing records, while the other
process keeps on polling this file to read the records. Any pointers to
the below points will be highly appreciated
 1. Documentation where the error number can be looked up (40019 in
this case)
 2. If anyone has encountered a similar problem with write operation on
a type 19 files, and has a solution, it would really help.

Thanks in advance
Warm regards
Anmol
