Re: [U2] HP Unix who am i

2010-02-02 Thread Kathleene M Hunter
Found the problem to be with the peek shell running on the new hp 3600
b.111.31 ia64. It works only under the korn shell. So changed the users to
start in the korn shell and then exec the peek shell and everything works.

Thanks for the information everyone.

Title: HP-UX 11.23 ssh: who(1) -m option fails to display as expected
Document ID: emr_na-c00996974-3

HP-UX 11.23 ssh: who(1) -m option fails to display as expected
PROBLEM
With HPUX 11.23 a who -Rm added to .profile fails
to display as expected. For example, from the debug:

 + + who -Rm
 + cut -d: -f1
 + sed -n s/^.*(\(.*\))$/\1/p
 DISPLAY=:0.0

CONFIGURATION
Operating System - HP-UX
Version - 11.23
Subsystem - ssh A.03.x

RESOLUTION
This problem has been identified as a timing issue in
multiple versions of ssh A.03.x on HP-UX 11.23 and has
been isolated to the -m option. Other versions of HP-UX
appear to be unaffected. A fix is planned.

The addition of a sleep(1) command has been found to
work around this issue. For example:

 sleep 6
 who -Rm

ALT KEYWORDS
ssh
who -Rm
who -m

This is a long shot, but we had a similar problem on hpux 10. Our
problem was a little different, it only impacted certain users, not
everyone. For certain users, who -m would report either multiple
lines or no lines. The problem was in the utmp file, where the user
would have more than one open line. The solution that we got from HP
was to get everyone off the system and null out the system accounting
files.

Like I said, it's a long shot, but it might help. If nothing else, it
would rule out a problem with the utmp file. (I don't know what HP uses
these days, but it's not called utmp anymore, either utmpx or utmps.)

Hi

Firstly READU will not execute the ELSE clause when the item is locked.
It will just sit there and wait for the lock to be released.

Regardless if it is a bug or not, your piece of code just doesn't make
sense.
What do you actually try to achieve?
You try to read a record and when it doesn't exist you want to set the
variable to null, right?
So you use
READU CITEM FROM FILE THEN
 ...
END ELSE CITEM = ''
instead of
CITEM = ''

In this example I was using, the ID was not on file, so it would not
have taken the LOCKED clause. I just added the locked clause to my
actual failing code to test the theory and it still takes the ELSE
clause because the record is truly not on file.

I tried George's idea of using named common and the problem still
 happens.

One last clarification, the problem seems to occur if the READ statement
is a READU. If the statement is a regular READ, it does not happen.

 Hi Troy

The problem with that code is that the else clause is taken when the
record is locked. You are assuming if the else clause is taken that the
record does not exist, which is not a safe assumption. I would suggest

Readu citem from fv, key locked
 * locked options
 End then
 * then options
 End else
 Citem =
 end

with random data with else clause in pick flavor

We are running universe 10.2.10 in pick flavor.

I have a program (part of a 4gl subroutine) that simplified does the
 following:

 CITEM =

READU CITEM FROM F.FILE, CID THEN

 END ELSE

IF CITEM # THEN PRINT CITEM IS NOT NULL!

 END

According to the documentation, when running in pick flavor, the value
of CITEM is unchanged if the read fails.

What happens is that CITEM is sometimes assigned to a random value and
not NULL. Right now it is being assigned to zero. Last week, this
same CITEM was being assigned to an escape sequence (about 8 characters
 long) when the read failed.

CITEM is a non-named common variable. This issues does NOT happen if
CITEM is not a common variable.

The result also has varied if I use READU vs READ. Clearly there is a
bug here in retaining the value of CITEM with a READ statement in pick
flavor. Unfortunately, I have not been able to create a simple example
to reproduce this problem outside of the 4gl. And this does not happen
in all the code, only in one section so far and IS reproducible in this
one case from logon session to logon session.

 Any ideas?

Unfortunately splitting data is a must.

The two files piece is working fine it's just the multiple records in

Hi Folks,

Here's a scenario for you:

Let's say there is an XML file containing album track data that we'd
like to import into 2 different Universe files. A sample layout might be
something like:

albums

  album

album_ID/

album_title/

album_total_runtime/

album_total_tracks/

tracks

  track number=1

track_ID/

track_title/

track_artist/

  /track

  track number=2

track_ID/

track_title/

track_artist/

  /track

/tracks

  album

/albums

What I'm trying to do is have an ALBUMS file and a TRACKS file. I want
a single record in the ALBUMS file for each album and a record in the
TRACKS file for each track. Essentially every album record in the XML
will product one ALBUMS record and potentially multiple TRACKS
records.

The trouble I'm having is getting more than one TRACKS record. I'm
wondering if anyone has ever tried this before and how their experience
went. I end up with just one TRACKS record with the first iteration.
Is what I'm trying even possible? I've opened a case with IBM as well
but figured maybe one of you has been in this situation before.

Our license count was originally less than the GSEMNUM value of 97,
we've slowly added licenses until we got to 117. We'll have to keep

Hi Brenda,

Is the rule of thumb about the value of GSEMNUM valid for
 other systems?

In my personal opinion (which may be wrong!), the rule of thumb is not

right.

UV locking is a very complex topic. It is another good reason to
recommend
the UniVerse Internals course.

To explain the mechanism briefly, the record lock table has GSEMNUM
rows,
each of which can hold at most RLTABSZ locks. The group lock table also
has
GSEMNUM rows but each can hold GLTABSZ locks. Given a big system, the
chances are that most record locks also require a separate informational

group lock so it usually makes sense that GLTABSZ and RLTABSZ are the
same.
The two tables always have the same number of rows for reasons that I
won't
go into here.

The default values are GEMNUM = 97, RLTABSZ and GLTABSZ = 75. That's
7275
entries in each table.

Now the fun bit

Let's think only about record locks. A particular record lock can only
ever
appear on a specific row of the table because the row number is
calculated
from the file's inode number and the group number within which the
record
exists. Once we know the row number (this is the mysterious number in
the
Lmode column of LIST.READU), the system simply scans the row of the
record
lock table to look for (a) an existing lock on this record, and (b) a
spare
space.

If the record is already locked, the program takes what ever action is
defined by the LOCKED clause or lack thereof. If it is not locked and we

find a spare space in the row, we lock the record. If there is no space,

this is handled just like the record being locked - the lock cannot be
moved
to another row.

This is where it all gets horrible. It is unlikely but technically
possible
(and easy with contrived demonstration programs) for one row of the
table to
be full while all the other rows are completely empty. Ultimately, it
all
comes down to statistics about how your application is likely to use
locks.
Assuming that it doesn't have some strange pattern about how it locks
records, or lots of modulo 1 files, I tend to work on the assumption
that
records will be scattered randomly through the table and you should
expect
to be able to (guesswork time) about 60% fill the table before the risk
of a
row becoming full becomes significant.

Sizing the tables is not about how many users you have but about how
many
concurrent locks you will

Subject: [U2] Unidata - handler for mistyped commands?

Hello,

Within Unidata, is there any way to intercept commands typed at the
command prompt if they aren't recognised?

It's to 'magically' allow slightly mistyped program names to launch that
program - some of our routine names are quite long - and also to
recognise abbreviated routine names in the nature of Quicksilver for the
Mac, if anyone's familiar with that.

Now, obviously I could do all this by running an extra shell over the
normal command prompt but it would be nicer to have it work at the
normal prompt... And I know the abbreviation thing can be done with VOC
entries, and I've already got a few set up, but I'm looking for a more
generalised solution.

Thanks,

Edward

What I did was link to the table in Access, open it, and then click on a
column to sort it. So it should have been an identical query.

I thought I'd test it - get Dr Dee Bee Spy to monitor me doing it on the
table that worked - and guess what! That table won't sort now, either!

I thought that would give some credence to David Jordan's idea of the temp
space, but there's masses of free disk space both on my pc and the server.

And I don't see how it could be permissions, seeing as it works sometimes
and not others.

As for different client software etc, we're having problems on at least two
pcs. The one we first noticed it on is running Office (Access) 2007, and my
pc is running Office (Access) 2003. The ODBC software is identical -
installed from a 10.2 client CD. Probably (but not definitely) the same CD.

Thing is, we really need to know what's causing it so we can definitely
avoid the problem - we don't want to install this on our customer's site and
then have them go down with this problem...

Cheers,
Wol

Is it the same query for both files/tables (that share the same
dictionary)?

Do both your queries work from a different client PC? If so, is there
different client software versions or ODBC clients?

david

What's odd is it looks like it's the PC end getting the query wrong
before it sends it, but I've got two files sharing the same physical
dictionary file and one works while the other one doesn't ... which
implies a data problem ... cue headscratching here ...
