In the DICT, in an I-descriptor you can specify LEN(@RECORD) If the record has
zero length it's empty.

Is there an easy way to determine if a record is empty?
I have a saved list of a thousand or more records that have record ID's that
interfere with our Ellusian database.
If they are truly empty, I can do house cleaning on them. If they contain any
data, I have to do a different process.
Will your statements support something in the nature of :
SELECT
... ,
a.PID
, ...
FROM (
SELECT
... ,
substring(colname ,charindex('|',colname)+1, charindex('|',colname,
charindex('|',colname)+1) - charindex('|',colname) -1) as PID
, ...

I love learning new things! I had never thought that MV ID were treated this way by a
savedlists.
I can duplicate Philippe's results as he is using a common UniData application.
PST.ROOM.ASSIGNMENTS is a MV field.
SELECT PERSON.ST '0044560'
SELECT PERSON.ST SAVING UNIQUE PST.ROOM.ASSIGNMENTS
for example:
... EVAL OCONV(ARPI.AMT*100/3, 'MD12') CONV FMT 10R ...
and it will do what you expect. (The above is for UniVerse, but I hope
it will be similar for UniData.)
