David, Mike, There seem to be two separate problems here:
1. Printing text with printer control sequences embedded in the text. 2. Printing a job from the &HOLD& file and retaining it in the &HOLD& file after it has been printed. <The following is a SALES Pitch> Universe on NT has no print spooler built into it whatsoever. All print jobs go directly to the Windows print spooler or directly to the Windows printer, depending on how the Windows printer was installed. Although we have not (yet) installed Universe on .nix, I understand that Universe on .nix has a limited print spooler, which seems to be confirmed by this thread. We have just released SpoolerPlus(TM) for Universe on NT to provide the functionality of a generic multivalue print spooler in Universe on NT, which solves both of the problems cited above. Our next step is to test SpoolerPlus(TM) on Universe on .nix. The first problem is solved by the STARTPTR command that assigns a printer to a print queue and, while doing so, executes a printer driver that prints the necessary escape sequences to configure the printer for the print queue to which it is assigned before it prints the print job. This eliminates the need to embed printer configuration commands in the text of the print job. It also enables you to generate print jobs from a proc or from TCL wherein it is very difficult to enter escape sequences at all. Finally, it enables you to print the print job on any printer rather than on the printer to which it was originally assigned, because it is not assigned to a printer, only to a print queue, and any printer can be assigned to that print queue. Using the SP-ASSIGN command, SpoolerPlus(TM) also permits you to generate the print job to a print queue either before (eg.. when the printer is otherwise occupied) or after the printer has been assigned to the same print queue, providing far more flexibility in the use of printer resources. It also enables you to designate that the print job be printed, placed on hold or both. The second problem is solved by moving the print jobs from the &HOLD& file to a separate hold file which is not a Type 1 or 19 file. This enables us to make greater us of the SPOOL verb in the spooling program to retain the print job in the hold file when it spools the print jobs to the printer, providing both the print and hold options were part of the SP-ASSIGN command issued prior to generating the print job.. The SP-EDIT command then enables you to re-print or delete a print job on hold. SpoolerPlus(TM) is a utility that greatly enhances the print capabilities of Universe and is long overdue. Please contact me directly if you would like more information or wish to discuss beta testing SpoolerPlus(TM) on either Universe on NT or Universe on .nix.
