Re: [U2] Printing to Remote Warehouse

2011-05-26 Thread John Thompson
Yet another option that I have done... which is still somewhat of a pain.
If their network hardware is rather old and they are expecting you to pop in
a device that connects via a serial port, you can try this thin client.

http://www.igel.com/us/products/hardware/ud3-series.html

I only mention that because a PC in a south florida warehouse (where I'm
located) does not last too long. Just don't expect it to run Microsoft
Office or load up a spreadsheet.

It does not run Accuterm, it runs Powerterm, and it will grab a WYSE or ADDS
Viewpoint Aux port signal and shoot it to a printer connected to a parallel
or serial port.

Of course, you could always do the same with a PC running Accuterm, if you
found a PC with a serial port on it.

In my opinion, Slave printing from a MV client session drives me nuts, and I
always make it a IP TCP/IP printer whenever possible.

Just another thought...

We solved a similar issue here in a rather low tech way. We set one of our
print spoolers to produce PDF files that are then emailed to the user. They
can then open and print from their PC. They don't even need to stay connected
to the network once the file/email is received.

Something like AccuTerm will still support all of your AUX code to operate in
pretty well the same manner as the dumb terminal.

IS the site "permanently connected" ... or are you using something like a
Windows based PPTP connection?

Re: [U2] Printing to Remote Warehouse

2011-05-25 Thread George Gallen
If Printwizard doing the acceptance, will your unix system allow a ipsec
connection? That is a protocol
to set up a Virtual Private Network connection, essentially, creating an
encrypted tunnel between the PC and your
unix system, like adding a network card to your unix system, and hooking the PC
up locally.
.
If this is the only PC, you could hard code the PC's VPN IP, and setup print
wizard emulating a Jet
direct as a remote printer. Then setup UV printer device to print to this
remote printer.

If you can't setup the IPsec, then you would need to configure the router which
connects the PC to
the internet to allow incoming traffic for a specific port # (ie. 9100 or 515)
to be port forwarded to
that PC, or to any IP that a printer is hooked up to.

First, if it's a dumb terminal they're probably not doing a telnet
connection. (If there's something spelled "telent" out there, I don't know
about it.) A dumb terminal communicates via serial. You MIGHT have a
serial-to-telnet adapter of some kind, and it would be important to know
that.

If you connect your AccuTerm in a similar manner, and use the correct
control codes to turn on and off the printer port, then AccuTerm *is* able
to do passthrough print. Note, though, that these codes vary by terminal
type, and you said you turned on the AUX port instead of the printer port,
so you might have the wrong codes.

Bottom line: it should be possible to do what you're doing with AccuTerm.

If the data needs to be manipulated to work on the (new) printer, such as
if you're transitioning to a laser printer or even a "Windows-only" (i.e.,
brain-dead) printer, you could bring our Print Wizard software in to play,
by doing passthrough print through AccuTerm, then feeding it to Print
Wizard, and out to the printer. Print Wizard could also apply a form
image, allowing you to print on plain paper instead of preprinted stock,
for instance.

It is also an option to run a freestanding version of Print Wizard, which
would mimic a JetDirect device.

There are lots of options. Call me if you'd like to discuss them.

Slave printing from a remote PC running Accuterm is really easy.
Sending char(18) to the display will switch the printer on and
everything subsequently sent to the display will be diverted to the
printer. Sending char(20) switches the printer off and returns output
to the display. You'll want to set the printer to "text mode" in
Accuterm so it bypasses any driver software on the PC. We have a 3rd
party that does add'l finishing to some of our products and they ssh in
via Accuterm over the internet to print the required bar code labels.
This is the portion of the code that sends the labels to the attached
Zebra printer:

PRINT SLAVE.ON
FOR J = 1 TO NO.LABELS
   LABEL = "^FN10^FD":J:" OF ":NO.LABELS:"^FS"
   FOR I = 1 TO CT ; PRINT LABEL ; NEXT I
NEXT J
PRINT SLAVE.OFF

Subject: [U2] Printing to Remote Warehouse

I apologize upfront if this is more related to Unix rather than UniVerse.
We have a remote warehouse that connects to us via telent on a dumb terminal.
They have a line printer hooked up to the dumb terminal. When we print packing
lists, we open up the aux port and send the print job to the printer. We are
looking to eliminate the dumb terminal, but we are stuck on how to send a print
job to a local printer hooked to a PC. Has anyone done this before? Is it
possible? The remote warehouse is not on our network - the only way they can
connect is via telent.

We are running UniVerse 10.2 on HP-UX and use AccuTerm as our emulation
software.

Thanks in advance,

Bryan Evans
