Many thanks for the update.

This is just for info really and following on from a thread of last week:

We tried to upgrade to Universe 11.1.0 at the weekend.
The first time that we tried we had an unreadable file in the download
that Rocket supplied to our U2 Support company.
This time the file was OK so that was a step forward but we had some
problems with the install not being able to find a couple of items and
not offering us the licence screen so we decided to roll it back.

We did this by restoring the usr/ibm account.
This however did not work and we got this error message when trying to
start Universe.

Couldn't start UVSMM. Please check /usr/ibm/uv/uvsmm.errlog"
   UniVerse is NOT started

The error log contained this:

   #more /usr/ibm/uv/uvsmm.errlog
   Message[DBS0047]
   uvsmm.errlog: END

which was not the most helpful and wouldn't Google at all !

SMM is something which comes in with release 11 so since we had
restored to release 10.13 we were a tad surprised to see it.

What had happened was that the upgrade (quite early on from the
timestamp) had overwritten the Universe start up script uv.rc (ours

resides in /etc)

So we had to restore that and inittabuvbak (which had also been
overwritten)

After that we we OK.

It took ages to work out that it was the uv.rc override that stopped
us simply restoring the account and carrying on, I am hoping that this
email means others won't have to spending their time on it.

2011-05-19 Thread Brett Callacher
Chuck,

I think that 11.1.1 is a Windows release so this may, or may not be relevant.

LIST.READU does not report a pid in 11.1.1. This is a "known" issue and is
fixed in 11.1.3 I am told.

How you go about finding any known issues, I have yet to establish.

UV11.1 has been available for AIX for 7 month; for Linux only 3..
I don't know how widely used it is yet.
I have not seen a rash of complaints about 11.1.

We are currently on 10.2.10 / Windows and contemplating migrating to
Linux.
UV choices are: 10.3.9 & 11.1.1.

We do not have a burning need for any new 11.1 functionality. The main
motivation would be to be able to put off future upgrades longer by
making this jump bigger.

Linux choices are RedHat or SuSE. Your thoughts?

Any warnings or endorsements re. UV version &/or Linux choices would be
much appreciated.

Re: [U2] Why should we NOT upgrade to UV11.1.1 ?

2011-05-18 Thread Perry Taylor
Hello Chuck.

You might want to watch out for some issues with permissions being set
incorrectly within a couple of the packages in 10.3.9. These cause an upgrade
to fail. This has been addressed with U2 Support. This might not be a problem
on a clean install rather than an upgrade.
