The variable has probably been set up as a dimensioned array somewhere else
in the program or an include file. Ie DIM Var(10)

It appears that one of my predecessors invoked a mat command. I am in the
process of purging errant uses of it.

I get the error you describe if I try to assign a dimensioned array to a
dynamic array variable, such as:
0001: DIM X(100)
0002: Y=
0003: X=Y
The other way around
