Artificial intelligence will play a major role in the future of transportation.
Vehicles are increasingly connected through the Internet of Vehicles and
becoming increasingly autonomous. From routing and intersection management to
multi-modal transportation and autonomous vehicles, this will change the way we
use limited resources such as roads and vehicles, as well as public
transportation. At the same time, it is important that the human stays in the
loop when automated decisions are made, posing additional challenges as how to
best design the interaction between the human and the intelligent system and
how to elicit user preferences to best make decisions on their behalf.
Moreover, it will be vital that ethical aspects and incentives are considered,
so that humans can trust the system, e.g., in terms of the private data being
used and making micro decisions on the user’s behalf such as routing decisions
and platooning (in case of autonomous vehicles).

This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from a range
of areas within AI around the transportation domain, including areas such as
machine learning, multi-agent systems, human-agent interaction, as well as
ethical aspects of AI.

We invite long and short papers. Short papers are mainly intended to be work in
progress and application papers. We especially encourage industry to apply for
these. Long papers are up to 14 pages in Springer lecture notes format, and
will get peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will receive a long presentation slot.
Short papers are up to 4 pages, and will be mainly assessed on the basis of
their relevance to the workshop. They will receive a short presentation slot
and the opportunity to present a poster.

Topics

Topic include but are not limited to:

  *   Multi-modal transportation
  * Game theory and mechanism design for transportation systems
  * Ethical issues in connected and autonomous vehicles
  *   Decentralised decision making
  *   Fairness and trust
  *   Privacy and security
  * Machine learning for transportation systems

[UAI] Call for Workshop Proposals: AAMAS 2017 - Sixteenth International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems

2016-08-05 Thread Sebastian Stein
**apologies for cross posting**

WORKSHOP PROPOSALS

AAMAS-2017 invites proposals for the Workshop Program, to be held on May
8-9, 2017, immediately prior to the technical AAMAS conference. The
objective of the AAMAS-2017 workshop program is to stimulate and facilitate
discussion, interaction, and comparison of approaches, methods, and ideas
related to specific topics, both theoretical and applied, in the general
area of Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems. The AAMAS-2017 workshops
will provide an informal setting where participants will have the
opportunity to discuss specific technical topics in an atmosphere that
fosters the active exchange of ideas.

All members of the AAMAS community are invited to submit workshop proposals
for review. We encourage workshops that focus on emerging topics and
applications, on open research questions and challenges, and on broader
topics that are of interest to a wider community.

Workshops can vary in length from half a day to two days, though we expect
most to be one full day in duration. As attendance will be limited to
registered participants, workshop organisers and attendees must register
for their workshop, whose fee will be separate from the main conference
fee. Workshop attendees do not need to register for the main AAMAS
conference, but are encouraged to do so. AAMAS-2017 reserves the right to
cancel workshops whose attendance does not support their running costs.

AAMAS-2017 is happy to announce that Springer is planning to publish two
books based on a selection of the workshop papers. The aim of these books
is to encourage innovative and visionary papers, even if their research
work is still at a preliminary stage, as well as encourage the submission
of good quality papers in general to all AAMAS-2017 workshops. To achieve
these aims, the first book will be a compilation of the most visionary
papers of the AAMAS-2017 Workshops, where one paper will be selected from
each AAMAS-2017 workshop. This book will be published under Springer’s Lecture

 9th – 10th of January, 2017 (23:59 UTC-12)Author Notification:
   24th of January, 2017*

*About AAMAS:*

AAMAS is the leading scientific conference for research in autonomous
agents and multiagent systems. The AAMAS conference series was initiated in
2002 by merging three highly respected meetings: the International
Conference on Multi-Agent Systems (ICMAS); the International Workshop on
Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages (ATAL); and the International
Conference on Autonomous Agents (AA). The aim of the joint conference is to
provide a single, high-profile, internationally respected archival forum
for scientific research in the theory and practice of autonomous agents and
multiagent systems.

*Information for Authors*
AAMAS 2017 encourages the submission of analytical, empirical,
methodological, technological, and perspective papers. Analytical and
empirical papers should make clear the significance and relevance of their
results to the AAMAS community. Similarly, methodological and technological
papers should make clear their scientific and technical contributions, and
are expected to demonstrate a thorough evaluation of their strengths and
weaknesses in practice. It is strongly encouraged that papers focusing on
specific agent capabilities evaluate their techniques in the context of
autonomous agent architectures or multiagent systems. A thorough
evaluation, conducted from a theoretical or applied basis, is considered an
essential component of any submission. Authors are also requested to pay
particular attention to discussing how their work relates to the state of
the art in autonomous agents and multiagent systems research as evidenced
in, for example, previous AAMAS and related conferences. All submissions
will be rigorously peer reviewed and evaluated on the basis of the overall
quality of their technical contribution, including criteria such as
originality, soundness, relevance, significance, quality of presentation,
and understanding of the state of the art.

AAMAS 2017, the sixteenth conference in the AAMAS series, seeks the
submission of high-quality papers limited to 8 pages in length, with any
additional pages containing only bibliographic references. Reviews will be
double blind; authors must avoid including anything that can be used to
identify them. Please note that submitting an abstract is required to
submit a full paper. However, the abstracts will not be reviewed and full
papers must be submitted for the review process to begin. All work must be
original, i.e., it must not have appeared in a conference proceedings,
book, or journal and may not be under review for another archival
conference. In addition to submissions in the main track, AAMAS 2017 will
be soliciting papers in special tracks. The review process for the special
tracks will be similar to the main track, but with program committee
members specially selected for each track. All accepted papers for the
special tracks will be included in the proceedings.

*JAAMAS Submissions*
AAMAS 2017 will also accept papers for presentation that have appeared in
the Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multi-agent Systems (JAAMAS) in the 12
months period preceding the AAMAS notification date. These articles also
have the option to publish an extended abstract (maximum two pages,
excluding bibliography) in the AAMAS proceedings. The articles must be
original and not previously published as a full paper in an archival
conference. The submission process for this track is separate from the main
paper submission process. Information will be posted on the relevant page.

For details on JAAMAS, visit - http://www.springer.com/comput
er/ai/journal/10458

[UAI] AAMAS 2017 Call for Tutorials

2016-08-23 Thread Sebastian Stein
AAMAS 2017 FIRST CALL FOR TUTORIALS

The AAMAS 2017 Organizing Committee invites proposals for the Tutorial
Program to be held on May 8-9, immediately before the technical
conference. AAMAS 2017 Tutorials should serve one or more of the
following objectives:

* Introduce novices to major topics of AAMAS research.

* Provide instruction in established practices and methodologies.

* Survey a mature area of AAMAS research or practice.

* Motivate and explain an AAMAS topic of emerging importance.

* Introduce expert non-specialists to an AAMAS area.

* Survey an area of agent research especially relevant for people from industry.

* Present a novel synthesis combining distinct lines of AAMAS work.

* Introduce AAMAS audiences to an external topic that can motivate or
use AAMAS research.

Topic areas of interest include all of those listed in the call for
the technical track (see http://www.aamas2017.org), including the
special tracks.

Tutorials will be half day long. A few full day tutorials may be
accepted but the proponents need to motivate their request when
submitting their proposal.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Those interested in presenting a tutorial should register their
proposal via an online form (see the submission instructions).
Proposals should be two to four pages in length and should contain the
following information:

1. A short title of the tutorial.
2. A brief description of the tutorial, suitable for inclusion in the
conference registration brochure.
3. A detailed outline of the tutorial, including preferred length
(half or full day).
4. Characterization of the potential target audience for the tutorial,
including prerequisite knowledge.
5. A description of why the tutorial topic would be of interest to a
substantial part of the AAMAS audience.
6. A brief resume of the presenter(s), which should include name,
postal address, phone and fax numbers, email address, background in
the tutorial area, any available example of work in the area (ideally,
a published tutorial-level article on the subject), evidence of
teaching experience (including references that address the proposer's
presentation skills as applicable), and evidence of scholarship in the
area.
7. The name and e-mail address of the corresponding presenter. The
corresponding presenter should be available for e-mail correspondence
during the evaluation process, in the case clarifications and
discussions on the scope and content of the proposal are needed.

The evaluation of the proposal will take into account the level of
general interest for AAMAS attendees, the quality of the proposal, and
the expertise and skills of the presenters. We emphasize that the
primary criteria for evaluation will be whether a proposal is
interesting, well-structured, and motivated, rather than the perceived
experience/standing of the proposer.

Those submitting a proposal should keep in mind that tutorials are
intended to provide an overview of the field; they should present
reasonably well established information in a balanced way. Tutorials
should not be used to advocate a single avenue of research, nor should
they promote a product.

The selection of the tutorials to be included in the final AAMAS
program will be based upon a number of factors, including: the
scientific/technical interest of the topics, the quality of the
proposal, the need to avoid strictly overlapping tutorials, and the
unavoidable need to limit the overall number of selected tutorials.

RESPONSIBILITIES (with respect to accepted proposals)

AAMAS will be responsible for:

* Providing logistic support and a meeting place for the tutorial.
* Together with the organizers, determining the tutorial date and time.
* Advertising the availability of the tutorial material to the AAMAS
2017 participants.

Tutorial organizers will be responsible for:

* Providing AAMAS with a legible PDF copy of their tutorial notes by
April 14, 2017.
* Providing a web site for the tutorial, which will include title and
abstract of the tutorial, presenters' details, outline, tutorial notes
and related reading material. The Tutorial co-chairs will ask the
Tutorial organizers to follow some common format and style for their
web sites, in order to make them as homogeneous as possible. More
details will be provided upon acceptance.
* Presenting the tutorial at AAMAS 2017.

AAMAS reserves the right to cancel any tutorial if the above
responsibilities are not fulfilled, if deadlines are missed, or if too
few attendees register for the tutorial to support the costs of
running the tutorial.

Abstract Submission:11th of November 2016 (23:59 UTC-12)
Full Paper Submission:15th of November, 2016 (23:59 UTC-12)
Rebuttal Phase:9th – 10th of January, 2017 (23:59 UTC-12)
Author Notification:24th of January, 2017

About AAMAS:

AAMAS is the leading scientific conference for research in autonomous
agents and multiagent systems. The AAMAS conference series was
initiated in 2002 by merging three highly respected meetings: the
International Conference on Multi-Agent Systems (ICMAS); the
International Workshop on Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages
(ATAL); and the International Conference on Autonomous Agents (AA).
The aim of the joint conference is to provide a single, high-profile,
internationally respected archival forum for scientific research in
the theory and practice of autonomous agents and multiagent systems.

Information for Authors
---

AAMAS 2017 encourages the submission of analytical, empirical,
methodological, technological, and perspective papers. Analytical and
empirical papers should make clear the significance and relevance of
their results to the AAMAS community. Similarly, methodological and
technological papers should make clear their scientific and technical
contributions, and are expected to demonstrate a thorough evaluation
of their strengths and weaknesses in practice. It is strongly
encouraged that papers focusing on specific agent capabilities
evaluate their techniques in the context of autonomous agent
architectures or multiagent systems. A thorough evaluation, conducted
from a theoretical or applied basis, is considered an essential
component of any submission. Authors are also requested to pay
particular attention to discussing how their work relates to the state
of the art in autonomous agents and multiagent systems research as
evidenced in, for example, previous AAMAS and related conferences. All
submissions will be rigorously peer reviewed and evaluated on the
basis of the overall quality of their technical contribution,
including criteria such as originality, soundness, relevance,
significance, quality of presentation, and understanding of the state
of the art.

AAMAS 2017, the sixteenth conference in the AAMAS series, seeks the
submission of high-quality papers limited to 8 pages in length, with
any additional pages containing only bibliographic references. Reviews
will be double blind; authors must avoid including anything that can
be used to identify them. Please note that submitting an abstract is
required to submit a full paper. However, the abstracts will not be
reviewed and full papers must be submitted for the review process to
begin. All work must be original, i.e., it must not have appeared in
a conference proceedings, book, or journal and may not be under review
for another archival conference. In addition to submissions in the
main track, AAMAS 2017 will be soliciting papers in special tracks.
The review process for the special tracks will be similar to the main
track, but with program committee members specially selected for each
track. All accepted papers for the special tracks will be included in
the proceedings.

JAAMAS Submissions
--

AAMAS 2017 will also accept papers for presentation that have appeared
in the Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multi-agent Systems (JAAMAS)
in the 12 months period preceding the AAMAS notification date. These
articles also have the option to publish an extended abstract (maximum
two pages, excluding bibliography) in the AAMAS proceedings. The
articles must be original and not previously published as a full paper
in an archival conference. The submission process for this track is
separate from the main paper submission process. Information will be
posted on the relevant page.

[UAI] FINAL Call for Workshop Proposals: AAMAS 2017 - Sixteenth International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems

2016-10-14 Thread Sebastian Stein
** Please note the approaching deadline for the submissions: October 17th,
2016 **

Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) - Hot Topics
series. The second book will be a
compilation of the best papers of the AAMAS-2017 Workshops, where again one
paper (different from the selected visionary paper) will be selected from
each AAMAS-2017 workshop. This second book will be published under
Springer’s Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS)
 series. By submitting a workshop
proposal the workshop organisers commit to perform this selection in
collaboration with the Workshop Co-chairs.

Research from, and relevant to, the AAMAS community has permeated a
variety of domains and applications, both as central to the
application and in key supportive roles. For example, the community
pursues research in topics including resource allocation, constrained
optimization, learning, scheduling, agent-based simulation, and
game-theoretic equilibrium computation, and applies them in domains
ranging from security to biomedicine to robotics to financial and
internet market design. Ideas and technologies from this research are
responsible for significant revenue-generation and cost-saving, as
well as for supporting important public policy and business strategy
decision-making.

We are interested in hearing about how research makes it into practice
and what the current problems of interest are. This special track
provides the ideal forum to present, discuss, and demonstrate
compelling applications, agent system deployment experiences, and new
business ideas. The goal is to promote the fostering of
mutually-beneficial relationships between those doing foundational
scientific research and those using autonomous agents and multiagent
systems in real-world commercial, non-profit, and government
applications.

We invite papers across two sub-tracks:

“Industrial Applications” sub-track: This is primarily for industry
practitioners and researchers to present application work that is more
mature, commercially deployed and uses agents/multiagent systems
technology in practice. Submitted material will be evaluated based on
the use of agent/multiagent systems technology for real problems over
a reasonable duration (minimum of 3 months), evidence of impact, and
lessons for the agents/multi-agents community of what worked and what
did not.

“Innovative Applications" sub-track: This is open to all researchers
to showcase promising new applications of agent/multiagent systems
technology that are at an early stage, with no requirement of
deployment. Papers will be evaluated on innovativeness of the proposed
application, use of agent/multiagent methods and evidence of possible
improvement, either in simulation or by other qualitative means.

Accepted papers of both sub-tracks will automatically get an
opportunity to present a demonstration at the conference.

Papers accepted to the “Industrial Applications” sub-track will
receive a special award for taking agents to the real world.

Submission Instructions
for the Innovative and Industrial Applications Special Track
--

For the industrial applications sub-track, authors must submit a
single page document (in AAMAS format) briefly summarizing the
interesting agent technologies featured in the deployed system and
their impacts. In addition, authors should also provide a URL (as a
footnote in the single page document) to a presentation of their work
in whatever electronic medium best shows the AAMAS relevant features
of the application, whether a video, PPT, deployment, webpage or
software. Acceptance to the track will be determined based on both
the degree to which interesting agent technologies feature in and
improve the deployed system, as well as the benefit to the community
to understanding the challenges and solutions in the application.

For the innovative applications sub-track, authors need to follow the
same paper submission instructions as used for submitting to the main
track (maximum of 8 pages, excluding references, in AAMAS format).

Important Dates
-

The submission deadlines are the same as for the main track of the
AAMAS 2017 conference (November 11, 2016 for an abstract/intent to
submit submission and November 15, 2016 for a full submission).

[UAI] Second Call for Tutorials: AAMAS 2017

2016-11-07 Thread Sebastian Stein
AAMAS 2017 SECOND CALL FOR TUTORIALS

[UAI] Call for Nominations: 2016 Victor Lesser Distinguished Dissertation Award at AAMAS 2017

2017-01-12 Thread Sebastian Stein
Nominations are invited for the 2016 Victor Lesser Distinguished
Dissertation Award sponsored by IFAAMAS, the International Foundation for
Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (http://www.ifaamas.org) and to be
presented at AAMAS-2017 (http://www.aamas2017.org/).

Eligible doctoral dissertations are those defended between January 1, 2016
and December 31, 2016 in the area of Autonomous Agents or Multiagent
Systems.

This award includes a certificate and a 1500EUR payment.

The selection of the dissertation will be based on the originality,
significance, and impact of the work. Evidence of such impact include
publications at highly selective conferences and journals in the field, with
due importance given to the AAMAS conference series and JAAMAS. Research
output that resulted primarily from the student's initiative will be
considered more favorably. The selection committee will be the final
arbiter in the decision process. The selection committee might decide to
consult external assessors and reserves the right to not award the prize if
the nominations do not meet the expected quality level.

The dissertation must be nominated by the thesis supervisor and must be
supported by the following documents (the documents must be placed on a web
page and only a link to this page e-mailed to Edith Elkind, elk...@cs.ox.ac.uk,
on or before February 28, 2017):

1. A PDF file of the dissertation. If the dissertation is not written in
English, the nomination must include a substantial manuscript in English,
with the nominee as the first author, published in a journal or a
prestigious conference.

2. A list of citations to published papers based primarily on this
dissertation with links to corresponding PDF files.

3. A recommendation from the dissertation supervisor, on departmental
letterhead, nominating the dissertation for the IFAAMAS-16 Victor Lesser
Distinguished Dissertation Award. The recommendation should argue the merit
of the dissertation and highlight, where relevant, how the work resulted
from the initiative of the student. This document, not to exceed 500 words,
should also certify the eligibility of the PhD by asserting that the PhD
was defended in calendar year 2016.

4. The names, email addresses, and affiliations of at most three
referees, familiar with the research of the candidate and experts in the
pertinent research area, who will directly email their recommendations for
the candidate to the chair of the selection committee. It is the
responsibility of the dissertation supervisor to contact the referees and
ensure that the letters are submitted by the deadline. A reference letter
should be no more than 500 words in length and should be on official
letterhead, signed and emailed as scanned PDF file.

NOTE: IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DISSERTATION SUPERVISOR TO
CONTACT THE REFEREES AND ENSURE THAT LETTERS (max 500 words, signed,
and on letterhead) ARE SUBMITTED BY THE DEADLINE.

Though the nomination is to be submitted by the nominee's dissertation
supervisor, it is required that the nominee has consented that the
dissertation be considered for this award and, if selected for the award,
commits to attend the AAMAS-2017 conference, where he/she will receive the
award, and will give an hour-long presentation in a special session of the
conference on the work contained in the dissertation. The cost of attending
the conference is not covered by the award.

The Agents, Interaction and Complexity research group at the University of
Southampton welcomes applications for:

  - 1 postdoctoral researcher
  - 4 PhD students

on the topic of Human-Agent Collectives.
===

We are establishing a new research team to work as part of a major UK/US-funded
research programme (https://dais-ita.org/pub ).
Successful candidates will work on one (or both) of these research themes:

*** Incentives and influence in social networks ***
This theme explores how incentives and intelligent algorithms can be used to
proactively influence the spread of messages within vast and partially
observable social networks. Doing this effectively will allow organisations to
effectively spread public health messages or to mobilise large numbers of
people for crowdsourcing tasks.

*** Intelligent and robust service provisioning ***
This theme investigates intelligent mechanisms for allocating resources in
dynamic and heterogeneous networks, comprising a range of machines owned by
different stakeholders and ranging from potentially unreliable
Internet-of-Things devices to powerful data centres. This will include applying
game theory to model strategic (human and machine) actors.

Call for Papers
