The tomcat packages are wisely split into separate packages per version.
Anyone running tomcat in 8.04, for example, will, most likely, have the
tomcat5.5 package installed. Therefore there is no risk of regression
by backporting the tomcat6 package.

document from a PDF presentation created by OO.o, but it cannot do the
same from a PDF presentation created by beamer. It appears that the
problem I am having lies with beamer, not with evince 2.22.2

I would argue that the payback is high. Build a hardy KVM guest with
768MB or 1GB of ram, then use 'gems'. The version of rubygems in hardy
can take hours to resolve dependencies because of the amount of memory
