this is just the way most programs utilize the home folder to store user data.

Copy files to xfs filesystem in nautilus = VERY SLOW!
Attached is a tarball with sources and binaries of my proposed fix (to
remove hunk #1 of the faulty patch)
On my system, this allow the logoff dialog to pop up, while none of the
GPM actions cause unexpected session savings..
Please test the deb and report back.

No, it's not that risky because members of group admin can also run
sudo. In fact, the security is better than having a root account with a
set password, because having a root password means you need to give it
to some people. In the current case, every admin has his password.

I think libpam_smb was replaced by the winbind package (which include
pam_winbind).
I suspect your specific issue is with library version differences
between Woody and Edgy. (In general, it's not too safe to install
cross-distribution .deb files.) If winbind doesn't work for you, you
might try
Edgy main is in deep freeze. You'll need make this an UVF exception
request and provide good reason why 0.4.2 should be upgraded.

On edgy with all updates installed I have to boot this notebook with the
noapic nolapic pnpbios=off options to avoid random freezing of the
system. (which could be a bug as well)
Anyway, when I try to insert a usb-stick I see a -110
What version of Ubuntu is this?
