Actually, it's because usplash is spinning and using 100% CPU... it's really
apparent that even things like disk access is sluggish during boot (disk not
grinding nearly as fast).
I agree with everyone suggesting a fallback that I'd rather NOT see a
usplash than end up with a slow-as-molasses

I think this particular bug can be closed. We're just stuck with using
ATI's proprietary fglrx driver on laptops with recent ATI chipsets, as
supplied in Dapper by an appropriate linux-restricted-modules-* package,
along with xorg-driver-fglrx and fgrlx-control.

Got the same problem, with the xserver-xorg-driver-i810 in dapper. Not
the original version (1:1.4.1.3-0ubuntu6), but when I install the
(1:1.6.5-0ubuntu1) from beryl repositories, I get the same problems.
But I have to install the newest driver, to getting aiglx working
