Doesn't happen to me. When you open evolution again after killing it, do
you have any mail to the Outbox? What sort of smtp server do you use?
Do you have any error on the command line? Maybe it doesn't get some ack
from the server before you kill it or something. That works fine on my
desktop

Yes, I installed fglrx 8.31.5 manually and now I have 3D support ... or
so I was told on the forum.
