The version you get in Openwengo site is really good for daily use. I
recommend it as workaround, since i use it myself on Edgy.
Any version compiled by anyone is not going to be that good'. Openwengo
and GCC 4.1 known issues, QT 4.2 issues, CMAKE migration, etc.

OK, I digged a bit more and I found out how thumbnails get generated.
The thumbnailer registered for the files (or at least some that I tried)
is /usr/bin/gnome-video-thumbnailer -s %s %u %o, which looks OK. I
tried running it by hand with
/usr/bin/gnome-video-thumbnailer -s 128
Actually gnome-app-install is quite dump :) Since it cannot install
packages itself it calls synaptic with root privileges to do the job.
ASAIK it is not allowed to raise your privilges in UNIX world. So far we
would have to call another process to do the install part - like gnome-
app-install.

When I tried to upgrade to Edgy, faced with the same problem. Then I
installed 'python vte' using 'Synaptic' - took only 1.5 hours, now I
have Edgy on my machine!

I use edgy / vino 2.16.0-0ubuntu2.4 / french keyboard on my desktop and
when I connect from a Nokia N800 using the N800 vncviewer port, I get
