Further experimentation shows that reverting libvte9 to version
1:0.15.3-0ubuntu3 instead of the newly installed 1:0.15-4-0ubuntu1 makes
gnome-terminal stable again.
That is the bug would appear to be in the new version of libvte9.

Ubunt deltas were introduced to close bug #84657, which provided 3.7.3 upstream

Now Debian ships it unmodified, so I think it can be safe to sync it.

A support request, also filed through launchpad.net, is a way to get
questions answered without filing a bug. It's good when there's
something that isn't working for you, but that might not be an actual

I can absolutely confirm this report. It is a pain in the rear, because
when someone ended the private conversation all your messages go to
/dev/null and you dont have an icon to click for restarting the private

I don't think backporting it is terribly useful The most compelling
usecase of upgrading of ntfsprogs is more reliable resizing or
partitioning, which is more important on the LiveCD than anywhere else.
Nonetheless if it builds in Edgy/Dapper I'd be happy to look at it.
