My problem with Toshiba 80 GB detachable HD is solved. It was coming
from something else. I took my HD to a MSW-XP box, and attached it, and
saw that some 'Password Protection' was enabled. I made it off there.

I can confirm the same problem with my feisty box. Using
aiglx+compiz+ati oss drivers. The workarounds stated in this topic work,
but this should really be fixed some time soon :) Almost quited using
desktop effects because of it.

I've noticed some more oddness today. When the screen is locked, and the
Switch User button is pressed, nothing happens. When I go to Quit -
Switch User, the mouse cursor goes into the 'busy/launching a program'
animation. From then on, I can't open new programs, and if I select Quit

I had the same problem upgradaing from Edgy to Feisty. The solution
provided in comment #2 i.e.:
sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop
then
sudo dpkg--configure -a
worked for me.
