I have similar problems here, on kubuntu feisty, kernel 2.6.20-12-generic
Only a bit more complex situation, due to my HDD partitioning.
I have an external USB disk with four partitions on it, that almost every time
are mounted correctly as:

I can't help as I'm not experienced with ubuntu yet, but I offer a thought for
a new user perspective:
I would think this bug would be important to fix (regarding Bug #1)
I imagine many new users of ubuntu will try out the LiveCD/USB while deciding
whether to switch.

I did read the comments on the other bug. Most of them seem to be
completely off-topic there as well.
The other bug is a report about how it's not possible to extract folders
using drag and drop, but the comments are talking about a different,
newer bug, which disables drag and drop extraction

I just tested something that I think could be of interest for this bug.
If not being able to close the maximized window with the close button on
the window. Press down ALT key and click somewhere in the window (a
plussign will be seen), then you can close it with the closebutton on
the window.
