I was able to get the 1680 x 1050 pixels resolution without manual editing as
follows:
1. install package nvidia-glx-new
2. enable the driver: sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
3. generate new xorg.conf: sudo

I know that I am not running as root. I have tested it in my own admin

No, it just means that HAL call to change brightness succeeded (no error
by powermanager), but it silently failed (did not change brightness). So

I had the same problem. Ubuntu 7.04 crashed very frequently – several
times per hour(!). If you see the error message 'MP-BIOS Bug 8254 times
not connected to IO-APIC' at boot up you probably need to activate the
noapic option in /boot/grub/menu.lst as described in

I thought it was quite a serious issue.

I have the problem again, this time in Kubuntu Feisty, when reading from
an USB flash disk (FAT). Konqeror shows all the files, but if an ä is
in the filepath, they cannot be opened with OpenOffice.org.
This does not happen in GNOME.

Diff does not help. We need full lshal after resume or at least output
of this:
lshal | grep ac_adapter
This will tell us what HAL thinks about ac_adapter state. Otherwise this
sounds like bug 63123.

guidance-power-manager doesn't detect changes during hibernation
Good to know powersave daemon works. Then it is probably missing/buggy
implementation in HAL. powersave daemon uses own methods to control
PM/brightness, therefore it can work, while HAL/Guidance-Power-Manager
/GNOME-Power-Manager do not as they depend on proper implementation in
HAL.

I don't confirm obibann comment, tried Feisty 64 bit live and I have the
same problem with the 32 bit so I consider patches provided still good.

I was having this same problem with Edgy where after 2 or 3
suspend/resume cycles Network Manager would not recognize my network
interfaces (using a notebook with built-in intel wireless). I was also
