It is indeed ;-). After some tinkering with the installation, I found
out that the problem was in the improved gs-esp Ghostscript
interpreter. I removed it, installed the old gs-gpl package and presto!
Everything works perfectly.
I'm going to file a bug report for the gs-esp package. My apologies

I reproduced the crash in a VMware install of Kubuntu using a non-ascii

Well it doesn't fix it, properly speaking, but insures me that the sound
wont stop will resizing one on my window.

@Lorenzo: If you installed the kernel source, it will be at
/usr/src/kernel source dir/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt.
Also, given your description, your current issue (waking up to a kernel
hard crash, with or without usplash, with or without vga=nnn) does not
seem related to this bug.

Belkin Wireless Card, 802.11b model F5D6020 (which was recognized no
problem and worked great in Edgy) no longer shows up in the Network
control panel. Wired networking works fine. I also tried a Proxim card
this morning that a friend had and it also doesn't show up.
